"Where heaven and health meet" |
21 Brees Blvd San Antonio, TX 78209 United States +1 210 822 7681 |
Although the term "healthy Mexican food" seems like an oxymoron, somehow these folks make it work. While it is a little off the beaten path, any restaurant that can make enchiladas, refried beans and tortillas low-fat, healthy and delicious is worth a visit. Your best bet is to try the tamales, the enchiladas or the chalupas with sides of Mexican rice and either refried or black beans. For an interesting twist, opt for the whole-wheat tortillas. Splashed with wild colors and funky ethnic decorations, the interior is small but inviting. The faithful arrive early for lunch and dinner to garner the best tables, with larger groups either claiming their space at the semi-private back tables. Review © 2007, Wcities |

International cuisine |
1651 Hwy 90 West San Antonio, TX 78009 United States +1 830 931 9655 |
Dine while eating in the beautiful Texas Hill Country. The Alsatian offers an excellent earth-and-sea platter consisting of filet mignon, fried catfish and breaded shrimp. Not in the mood for steak? Try the Popeye The Sailor's Plate, a platter of fried catfish, fried shrimp and fries. If you are looking for something from the grill, then you may want to try the Texas-size T-Bone or the Tex-Mex combo, a rib eye served with two enchiladas. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Country cuisine in the city |
9821 Colonnade Blvd Omni Hotel San Antonio, TX 78230 United States +1 210 699 5864 |
Looking for wild game, then look to Bolo's, located in the Omni Hotel. It offers a diverse menu. From the rotisserie, you will find free-range chicken with potato gratin and mushroom sauce, Long Island duck served with wild rice. The herb-rubbed pork loin with brandied apples and French onion risotto is always a favorite. If steaks are more to your liking, then try the bone-in strip steak with an ancho chili sauce and potato gratin or maybe the center-cut filet mignon with garlic butter and vegetable ratatouille. The restaurant also serves breakfast and lunch. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Quaint Mexican Restaurant on the River Walk |
527 River Walk San Antonio, TX 78205 United States +1 210 223 2939 |
While the city, along with the River Walk for that matter, is overrun with Mexican restaurants, this one distinguishes itself by offering both a beautiful view of the River Walk and a quiet atmosphere. Along with a friendly wait staff, Cafe Ole offers patrons sweet serenades of Mexican mariachis on a nightly basis. The mariachis are one of the defining local Hispanic traditions and really give guests an authentic taste of the culture that makes San Antonio unique. The menu is more Tex-Mex than pure Mexican, but includes tasty fajitas, enchiladas, flautas and quesadillas to name a few selections. This restaurant is also known for its good selection of margaritas. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Some like it hot |
255 E Basse Rd Ste 600 San Antonio, TX 78209 United States +1 210 821 3738 http://www.canyoncafe.com |
The dramatic flaming torches positioned under an open-beam canopy outside the restaurant promises something different...and the food delivers on that promise.A Southwestern theme is emphasized with pine timbers, pleasing shades of turquoise and terracotta, and lots of Native American accessories. The restaurant is always busy during lunch and dinner, so be prepared to wait. Everything that comes out of the kitchen is garnished with spicy goodness. Try the sublime Tudie's Chicken-Fried Tuna ($12.95), the tender Tahoe Tenderloin ($18.95) or the provocative Desert Fire Pasta ($10.95). Review © 2007, Wcities |

Classic Tex-Mex food on the River Walk |
430 East Commerce St San Antonio, TX 78205 United States +1 210 226 6718 http://casa-rio.com/ |
Casa Rio was the first restaurant on the River Walk and is still a must if you have never eaten riverside. With colorful décor, inside and outside seating, and a prime location for people-watching, this restaurant is a favorite among both tourists and locals. Add potent, thirst-quenching margaritas, waitresses bustling about in Mexican sundresses, and Mexican favorites such as enchiladas and tamales, and you have the makings of the classic Tex-Mex dining experience. Because no reservations are taken and this is a hot spot, you may want to arrive a little early to avoid long lines. Review © 2007, Wcities |

52 different margaritas |
2026 Babcock Rd San Antonio, TX 78229 United States +1 210 615 7000 http://www.cha-chas.com |
The festively named Cha Cha's, located in the heart of the Medical Center area, is big on atmosphere. The decor ranges from traditional and somewhat boring to elegant and quaint. For a romantic dinner, ask for a table in the gazebo section. Each secluded table is surrounded by a white wrought-iron dome laced with (ahem, plastic) ivy. However, after a few of this place's 52 varieties of margaritas, you won't care. Expect to find the usual Tex-Mex favorites: enchiladas, tacos and fajitas. The second Cha Cha's location is at 5616 Bandera Road in San Antonio (+1 210 681 2066). Review © 2007, Wcities |

Mexican cuisine made fun |
18008 US Hwy 281 N San Antonio, TX 78232 United States +1 210 545 0300 |
The Austin, Texas landmark finally made its way a little closer to the border. Chuy's boasts decor that could most politely be called kitschy: painted wooden fish hanging from the ceiling, an enormous jalapeno pinata and framed black-and-white photos of other Mexican restaurants in the city, to name a few of the oddities. The food is delicious and, thankfully, not mainstream. Enjoy chicken enchiladas made with blue corn tortillas, "big as yo' face" burritos and the Elvis Presley Memorial Combo (a platter of oversized servings of enchiladas, tacos and queso). True Texas barbecue on the River Walk |
111 West Crockett San Antonio, TX 78205 United States +1 210 229 1941 http://countyline.com/ |
This is the kind of barbecue you dream about. The County Line serves up a variety of tender meat, slow-cooked for 18 hours, that literally falls off of the bone and melts in your mouth. Located on the River Walk, this restaurant not only offers a spectacular view, but also affords downtown visitors an opportunity to enjoy the "state meal" without venturing far from their hotels. Not a beef eater? Don't despair; the barbecue chicken, turkey, pork and sausage are equally tasty. All entrees come served with generous portions of sides, including classic potato salad, beans and coleslaw. For dessert, be sure to try one of the fruit cobblers. A full bar is available, but real Texans drink ice cold beer with their barbecue. Review © 2007, Wcities |

If you are looking for an upscale dining experience with classic cuisine and a decor to match, look no further. The china, silver, table settings and general decor of this restaurant make it an experience in fine dining. The menu consists of entrees such as rack of lamb, chateaubriand and beef Wellington. The Fig Tree also spares no expense on a very well-rounded wine list. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Mayan ruins in San Antonio? |
121 North Zarzamora St San Antonio, TX 78207 United States +1 210 433 0111 |
Don't let the name fool you, as Karam's offers some of the best Mexican food in town. Cheery yellow tables and red chairs are complemented by piñatas hanging from the ceiling, and an authentic Mexican trio plays music on Friday and Saturday nights. If you discovered Karam's long enough ago, you may have heard Selena (yes, that Selena) and the Dinos perform here live. After dinner, walk off the enchiladas, puffy tacos and margaritas among the Mayan "ruins" in the back. Be sure to throw a penny in the fountain and make a wish that they never change the cheese nachos recipe. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Classic Mexican cuisine. |
2427 Vance Jackson Rd San Antonio, TX 78213 United States +1 210 340 1337 http://www.lafogata.com |
This is one of San Antonio's best-known Mexican restaurants, and for good reason. Both the food and the beverages are excellent. The margaritas will knock your socks off; be sure to enjoy one on the large, shaded patio. For Mexican cuisine, La Fogata sets an excellent standard with green enchiladas and queso flameado that cannot be beat. Other specialties include the garlic-heavy pollo loco, quesadillas and chile rellenos. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Las Canarias is located inside one of San Antonio's most historic hotels, Omni La Mansion del Rio. It offers formal, courtyard and patio dining in addition to providing room service for hotel guests. Renowned chef Scott Cohen, who was formally trained in France, strives to provide food and service that goes beyond guests' expectations. Chef's specialty, grilled swordfish is a must. Classic Texas cuisine on the River Walk |
237 Losoya San Antonio, TX 78205 United States +1 210 223 9374 |
This restaurant is known for its Texas cuisine. Chicken-fried steak is served up here in heaping portions, as are most of the other entrees. You'll also find steaks, ribs, chicken and catfish here, as well as popular desserts such as apple and pecan pie ala mode. The majority of the seating is on a long second-story balcony that overlooks the River Walk, giving you a nice way to dine in a somewhat quiet setting without missing out on the action taking place below you. Award-winning Mexican food |
4223 Blanco Rd San Antonio, TX 78212 United States +1 210 732 6017 |
In a city where Mexican food reigns supreme, this restaurant is one of the kings. But Los Barrios doesn't rely on formality—the menu promotes eating tacos, tostados, tortillas, and flautas with your fingers. The restaurant's large seating capacity is made homier with traditional colors and wall art, large windows and lots of lush green plants. A well-stocked bar and live music Friday-Sunday evenings help make the wait for a table a little more bearable. With a comprehensive menu offering everything from tacos and tamales to cabrito and cod, it's hard to decide what to order. However, you can't go wrong with the Classic Enchilada Assortment, which offers enchiladas prepared five different ways. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Classic Mexican food and bakery, open 24/7 |
218 Produce Row (In Market Square) San Antonio, TX 78207 United States +1 210 225 1262 http://www.mitierracafe.com |
Located in Market Square, this San Antonio oldie-but-goodie has been a favorite of both locals and tourists since 1946. The Mexican specialties such as Chile Rellenos, Huevos Rancheros and the huge combination platters are excellent, and the atmosphere truly takes you south of the border. Nowhere else will you be serenaded by mariachis while enjoying chorizo and eggs or an eight-ounce rib eye. But be sure to have a tip ready for the entertainers; they want to enjoy a meal later as well. Finally, do not miss the panaderia (bakery) for fresh breakfast pastries, Mexican breads and sweet rolls. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Classic Mexican food and real fruit margaritas on the River Walk |
415 E Commerce St San Antonio, TX 78205 United States +1 210 224 9951 |
The River Walk boasts a disproportionate number of Mexican restaurants. So, what does one do to stand out from the crowd? Create different flavored margaritas made out of fresh fruit and have such a large selection that people just keep coming back again and again. While you enjoy your drink, dine on classic Mexican fare such as fajitas, enchiladas, burritos and tacos. Lots of outdoor seating is available overlooking the River Walk. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Taking its menu a step beyond the expected fare, Paloma Blanca features enticing chicken and beef dishes, delicious soups and more in addition to the usual enchiladas, tostadas and quesadillas. Eclectic New American restaurant on the River Walk |
245 E Commerce San Antonio, TX 78205 United States +1 210 210 223 9141 http://www.presidioplaza.com/ |
This is one of the more elegant places to eat on the River Walk. As you walk by this restaurant, you cannot help but notice the mission-like colonnade entrance that beckons you to enter. The outdoor patio seating surrounds a beautiful, large wrap-around bar, which anchors this restaurant. The food here is described as eclectic New American and compliments the surroundings nicely. The menu is rounded out with unique selections of pasta, poultry, pork, and top-grade beef. Although most of the entrees are excellent, waiters tend to push the ever-popular pecan-crusted chicken in an apple/brandy/butter sauce. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Mexican food so good, they named it twice. Located in the heart of the city's River Walk, Rio Rio Cantina offers tried-and-true Tex-Mex dining, both indoors and overlooking the river. Do not miss favorites such as Green Enchiladas, beef and Chicken Fajitas and enormous Quesadillas. The bartenders also make a darn good margarita. This is a colorful, fun and noisy place where kids blend in well and have a great time. Private banquet rooms are available, as is private catering, both on premise and off premise. Great Tex-Mex dining in Southtown |
910 S Alamo St San Antonio, TX 78205 United States +1 210 223 1806 |
Located in the heart of Southtown, Rosario's is packed every night. It can pack in even more now that they are in a larger (but just as lively) location just a block from where the restaurant used to be. Sip on a perfectly crafted frozen Margarita as you enjoy enchiladas, carne guisada, pork tips and so much more. Do not miss Rosario's on Friday nights, when it offers entertainment by some of the best bands in South Texas. Get there early to snag a table and enjoy dinner, then prepare to dance yourself silly. Just a short drive out of the city, nestled in the little town of Leon Springs, you'll find some of the best barbecue in this part of the state.
