Blue Star Brewing Company

A brew with a view

(in the Blue Star Arts Complex)
San Antonio, TX 78210
United States
+1 210 212 5506

Hop a trolley from the River Walk for something different at this brewpub. The huge copper brewing tanks here figure prominently and a sizable patio offers a view of the tranquil end of the River. Along with the variety of beers, it offers standard fare such as burgers and chicken wings, as well as a few surprises including Sautéed Chicken and Artichokes and Grilled Salmon. Try a four-ounce sample of the Smoked Dark Ale or the creamy Stout for only USD1. Note that the kitchen stops serving food at 10pm during the week and at midnight on weekends.

Bonham Exchange

Dance (most of) the night away in downtown
411 Bonham St
San Antonio, TX 78205
United States

http://www.bonhamexchange.net/
The Bonham Exchange, simply known as "The Bonham," is a large and popular nightclub a couple of blocks away from Rivercenter Mall. Although the Bonham still primarily sees itself as a lesbian/gay club, times have changed, and the club now boasts a more diverse clientele. Dance on one of the club's three dance floors and when you are hot and tired, enjoy a drink on the patio. If you are hungry, you can usually find someone selling tacos or hamburgers. There is a small room between the first and second floors of the main dance floor with newspapers, flyers and other information about the lesbian/gay community.

Cappyccino's

Upscale neighborhood bar
5003 Broadway Ave
San Antonio, TX 78209
United States
+1 210 828 6860
This upscale neighborhood bar packs 'em in on the weekends, and it's no wonder, considering its incredibly long list of beers, scotches, tequilas, vodkas, liqueurs and more. There are so many offerings, in fact, that the twelve-page menu could double as an encyclopedia. An abbreviated menu offers unusual, but tasty, selections for those with the munchies. Be sure to try the chicken nachos, they are not what you might expect.

Durty Nelly's Irish Pub

Irish Pub on the River Walk
Hilton Palacio del Rio
715 E River Walk St
San Antonio, TX 78205
United States
+1 210 222 1400
When you think of San Antonio, you don't necessarily think of an Irish pub, now do you? Well, think again. Durty Nelly's, located on the River Walk on the river level of the Hilton hotel, is a rollicking good time. Pull up a chair, order a beer (or two, or ten) and sing along with the pianist. A versatile guy, the pianist takes requests and can play just about anything. Probably the most fun thing to do is munch on the peanuts and toss the shells on the floor. Yes, it is allowed!

Gruene Hall

Legendary dance hall
1281 Gruene Rd
San Antonio, TX 78130
United States
+1 830 606 1281
http://www.gruenehall.com
Only about a 30-minute drive from downtown San Antonio, this hall's tiny stage has hosted more legendary musicians than anywhere else. It is also not uncommon to encounter a film crew using the historic hall as a backdrop for a major motion picture or music video. The hall is basic, with its wooden floor, long bar, cold beer, guys in cowboy hats and girls in tight jeans, but it is also authentic. The building was constructed in the late 1880s as the social center of a small cotton farming community. In the 1970s it was saved from sure dessimation by its current owners, and it has since become an institution in Texas music. Past performers have included Jerry Jeff Walker, Willie Nelson, Kelly Willis, Marty Stuart, Joe Ely and many, many more. Cover charges vary.

Howl at the Moon

Sing-along piano bar
111 Crockett St W
Ste 201
San Antonio, TX 78205
United States
+1 210 212 4770
http://www.howlatthemoon.com
Combine two full-service bars with two talented dueling pianists and you have a recipe for wild, raucous fun. Howl at the Moon is a high-energy sing-along bar that gets louder and more fun as the night wears on. There is definitely a proportional relationship between alcohol and singing: the more alcohol you consume, the more you sing, and usually louder and further off-key, too. Oddly, that is what makes this place a great choice when you are out with a crowd.

Eclectic neighborhood icehouse
100 Probandt St

San Antonio, TX 78204

This ultra-casual bar provides the perfect backdrop for soaking up a few brews, a little sun and a lot of local color. A few tables are inside, but most of the action takes place on the patio under a canopy of huge pecan trees. When they open the purple garage door, you know it is time to party. For a list of beers, ask the bartender or just look at the bottle caps blanketing the patio.

San Antonio, TX 78205
United States
+1 210 222 0220

Look for the statue of the Scotsman in full regalia to locate this fun bar with a British/Scottish theme on the River Walk. Enjoy a wide selection of both imported and local beers on tap while watching the crowds pass by from your patio table. The menu is definitely pub-oriented, but its offerings are rather tasty. Expect the usual steaks, fish and chips and sandwiches. While the food is good, the fun atmosphere, billiard tables, dart board, video games and large beer selection are the main attractions. Mad Dogs is open late, and thus is a good place to end your evening.

212 College St
(between Presa and Navarro streets)
San Antonio, TX 78205
United States
+1 210 220 1972

Totally retro, totally kitsch and totally fun. This dance club occupies three floors of a former office building overlooking the River Walk. The first floor features '90s and current music and is decked up with plenty of mirrors, silver tones and neon colors. Polly Esther's Disco holds court on the second floor and features music from the disco era. The '70s experience is complete with a "Saturday Night Fever"-style lighted disco floor, a Partridge Family bar and a Lava Lamp Lounge. Topping it all off is Polly Esther's Culture Club on the third floor. Take a nostalgia trip back into the '80s, complete with black light bars and a laser-lit "Purple Rain" dance floor. Drink specials, contests and cover charges vary.

A friendly atmosphere with a unique design. Twisted metal and a lounge like feel make this place a favorite of the Alamo Heights crowd. The bar is almost always packed and has a great outdoor patio where one can sit back with a cold beer and enjoy the crowd.Whether you are inside or out you will not be disappointed.

San Antonio, TX 78209

The décor here is something between a rustic ranch house and a polished hacienda. The interior is fairly standard, with booths and tables, but the wrought-iron tables that dot the patio add a comfortable charm. Strategically placed heaters keep the patio warm and wonderful year-round. A full bar serves several draft and bottled beers as well as a good selection of wine. If you are hungry, drop in for lunch or an early dinner. Start with the divine artichoke dip and then dig in to the pecan breaded chicken. Note that the kitchen stops serving food two hours before closing time.

Shakespeare, dancing princess and many other playwrights and characters do their rounds at the Sunken Garden Theater. An open air amphitheater, this venue is used for both commercial and city co-sponsored events. Get together for musical evenings as there are jazz, country and rock concerts. Tejan or Cajuno music is also played and you can catch the San Antonio Symphony playing here. For some laughter, watch the comedy plays. The setting is romantic as the stage is set against a wooded hillside, where cut-limestone buildings in Greek revival style support the dressing rooms. So get transported back to time!

This bar pours more than 40 varieties of wine available by the glass, including more than five varieties of champagne. If none of those suit you, partake of any one of the numerous brandies or liqueurs, or enjoy a premium mixed drink from the fully stocked bar. Beautiful but small, Zinc has almost an elitist, yet friendly, feel; it is as if you have discovered the clique and have been welcomed. The crowds is small, even though it is just one block off the beaten path from River Walk.
