Aldino

A touch of Italy "at the vineyard."
1203 N Loop 1604 West, #101
(Vinyard Center)
San Antonio, TX 78201-4002
United States
+1 210 340 0000
http://www.aldinos.com/
Affiliated with Aldo's Ristorante Italiano, Aldino has a warm and elegant setting recalling ancient Rome. The Roman architecture, with its columns and murals creates an old world atmosphere, the better to enjoy the fine Italian cuisine. Depending on the weather, you will likely want to dine on the outdoor patio. There's even a complete party room for receptions and other group activities. The full bar and fine wine selection makes for a well-rounded meal, for lunch or dinner. Try the Ravioli de Vitello, which consists of ravioli stuffed with ground veal, spinach and ricotta cheese and then topped with a pesto cream sauce; or the Chicken Gorgonzola, a sautéed chicken breast topped with mushrooms, sun-dried tomatoes and a tarragon cream sauce.

County Line Smokehouse & Grill

True Texas barbecue on the River Walk
111 West Crockett
San Antonio, TX 78205
United States
+1 210 229 1941
http://countyline.com/
This is the kind of barbecue you dream about. The County Line serves up a variety of tender meat, slow-cooked for 18 hours, that literally falls off of the bone and melts in your mouth. Located on the River Walk, this restaurant not only offers a spectacular view, but also affords downtown visitors an opportunity to enjoy the "state meal" without venturing far from their hotels. Not a beef eater? Don't despair; the barbecue chicken, turkey, pork and sausage are equally tasty. All entrees come served with generous portions of sides, including classic potato salad, beans and coleslaw. For dessert, be sure to try one of the fruit cobblers. A full bar is available, but real Texans drink ice cold beer with their barbecue.

This is one of San Antonio's best-known Mexican restaurants, and for good reason. Both the food and the beverages are excellent. The margaritas will knock your socks off; be sure to enjoy one on the large, shaded patio. For Mexican cuisine, La Fogata sets an excellent standard with green enchiladas and queso flameado that cannot be beat. Other specialties include the garlic-heavy pollo loco, quesadillas and chile rellenos.

Le Rêve is French for "the dream," and this cozy, elegant star in the heart of downtown is a great place to grab a brew, some beef and a break. White tablecloths, expert service and a beautiful wine list add to the allure of this formal but friendly reverie just off the beaten path. Liberty Bar

Known for great food and an odd building
328 E Josephine St
San Antonio, TX 78215
United States
+1 210 227 1187
Liberty Bar's old, deceptively restored home seems to lean so precariously, one wonders how it still stands. Wrongfully playing second fiddle to the building, the menu and the wine list boast some unique and tasty selections. Do not pass up any of the chicken dishes, the chilled green bean salad, or the homemade breads and desserts. The bar portion of the restaurant draws an eclectic and lively crowd in the evenings. Be sure to pop in for brunch on Sundays.

Luigi's

Wonderful Italian restaurant still somewhat undiscovered
6825 San Pedro
San Antonio, TX 78216
United States
+1 210 349 5251
This great find hides behind an unassuming facade in a less-than-glitzy neighborhood. Once inside the door, you'll discover a menu ripe with delicious and authentic Italian dishes, an impressive wine list, beautiful decor and thoughtful service. Luigi's puts its own delicious mark on standard fare such as Fettuccine Alfredo, lasagna and manicotti. For an unusual side dish, try the steamed spinach with lemon and butter. The soft lighting and the pianist help create an intimate atmosphere for lovers or friends; you should opt to leave the kids at home.

Mi Tierra Cafe

Classic Mexican food and bakery, open 24/7
218 Produce Row
(In Market Square)
San Antonio, TX 78207
United States
+1 210 225 1262
http://www.mitierracafe.com
Located in Market Square, this San Antonio oldie-but-goodie has been a favorite of both locals and tourists since 1946. The Mexican specialties such as Chile Rellenos, Huevos Rancheros and the huge combination platters are excellent, and the atmosphere truly takes you south of the border. Nowhere else will you be serenaded by mariachis while enjoying chorizo and eggs or an eight-ounce rib eye. But be sure to have a tip ready for the entertainers; they want to enjoy a meal later as well. Finally, do not miss the panaderia (bakery) for fresh breakfast pastries, Mexican breads and sweet rolls.

111 W Crocket St
(Suite 101)
San Antonio, TX 78205
United States
+1 210 227 2782

If you are planning a trip to the Alamo city, there are two things you must eat: any type of authentic Mexican food and Paesano's "Shrimp Paesano." This incredible appetizer/entree is so rich and tasty that you won't know when to stop. Paesano's on the River Walk has a relaxed yet upscale atmosphere; you can sit inside or by the river and browse through an extensive wine list. Don't stop with the Shrimp Paesano, though, because everything on the menu is fresh and scrumptious. The pasta dishes are huge, the pizza is made with fresh, innovative ingredients, and the meats are varied and delicious. If you're dining away from downtown, but still in the mood for Italian food, visit Paesano's at its Quarry location.

Polo's

An exceptional dining experience
401 South Alamo St
Fairmount Hotel
San Antonio, TX 78205

+1 210 224 8800
Charm and elegance are the setting for this quiet, yet beautiful dining environment. Located inside the Historic Fairmount Hotel, you will find fine wine, contemporary art, and Southwest cuisine flavored with a bit of the orient. Be sure to try their Mesquite Grilled Rabbit or Australian Lamb Chops for a most delightful and different epicurean experience. Leaning toward something more oriental? Try the Midnight Chicken with a Moroccan Curry Sauce & Mango Coulis or maybe the Hong Kong Harbor plate consisting of scallions, chilies, bok choi, scallops and salmon with a sesame plum sauce.

421 East Commerce Street
San Antonio, TX 78205

Mexican food so good, they named it twice. Located in the heart of the city's River Walk, Rio Rio Cantina offers tried-and-true Tex-Mex dining, both indoors and overlooking the river. Do not miss favorites such as Green Enchiladas, beef and Chicken Fajitas and enormous Quesadillas. The bartenders also make a darn good margarita. This is a colorful, fun and noisy place where kids blend in well and have a great time. Private banquet rooms are available, as is private catering, both on premise and off premise.

Rosario's

Great Tex-Mex dining in Southtown
910 S Alamo St
San Antonio, TX 78205
United States
+1 210 223 1806
Located in the heart of Southtown, Rosario's is packed every night. It can pack in even more now that they are in a larger (but just as lively) location just a block from where the restaurant used to be. Sip on a perfectly crafted frozen Margarita as you enjoy enchiladas, carne guisada, pork tips and so much more. Do not miss Rosario's on Friday nights, when it offers entertainment by some of the best bands in South Texas. Get there early to snag a table and enjoy dinner, then prepare to dance yourself silly.

Southwestern cuisine on the River Walk
223 Losoya
San Antonio, TX 78205
United States
+1 210 227 0864
http://www.zunigrill.com
Although this is one of the only restaurants on the River Walk that opens for breakfast, it is for lunch or dinner that you should visit. Enjoy tasty enchiladas and chicken dishes, or a huge spinach salad with grilled salmon. Be sure to save room for dessert, too. The lively interior, which contains only a moderate amount of seating, opens to an expansive riverside patio populated with colorful, mosaic-tiled tables and scurrying sparrows. A popular spot among locals and tourists alike, the place fills early; large groups should call ahead to make reservations. The restaurant also has a fairly large banquet area for private functions.
