This little tour takes just a couple of hours and is completely free. Downtown San Antonio boasts some of the most beautiful public places in the city. To begin, wander along the River Walk. From the Southwest Craft Center at the north end to Arneson River Theater on the South end, making sure you take the detour around the bend at Rivercenter Mall. It's a little bit of a hike but the foliage is gorgeous, the quiet areas are peaceful, and the busier sections make for great people-watching.

Then, go up to street level and stop in at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. A small church with a lovely sanctuary, it is dubbed "St. Joske's" for the little church's refusal to be displaced by an enormous department store. Not to be thwarted, the department store (Joske's) simply built around the church. The building that was Joske's is now part of the Rivercenter Mall.

From here pay a visit to the St. Anthony Hotel. Boasting one of the most elegant lobbies in the city, the staff at the hotel is used to visitors wandering through. Your last stop is the Gunter Hotel, another of the most beautiful lobbies. Elegantly restored the mahogany wood and pristine marble is breath-taking.

This historic hotel is located downtown, directly across from the restored Majestic Theatre, which is home to the San Antonio Symphony. There isn't a more beautiful or more regal hotel lobby in all the city. If you select another hotel to stay in, at the very least drop in to see the finely detailed carved mahogany columns, the luxurious carpets and the antique light fixtures in the lobby. The guest rooms are just as lovely, although they vary a bit in size—a charming illustration of the hotel's age.

The Essence of San Antonio

When you think of San Antonio, two things automatically come to mind: the Alamo and the River Walk. The River Walk was conceived in 1929. Downtown had serious flood problems, and Robert Hugman suggested that the city turn the San Antonio River into an asset rather than a hindrance. Hugman's brainchild has since become the essence of the city. The city's most popular attraction, it is often crowded and filled with children, party goers, tourists and locals. In the heart of the River Walk is an area filled with restaurants, shops and nightclubs, punctuated by fountains and towering Cypress trees. The River Walk is particularly crazy during Fiesta.

River Walk/Downtown

San Antonio
United States
The heart of the city's tourism business beats along the River Walk and in the downtown area. Densely packed with hotels of varying price ranges, attractions, restaurants and bars, a visitor could conceivably spend his entire trip in one area of town. The area bustles with activity nearly every night of the week and almost all year long, with locals and tourists alike enjoying mouth-watering cuisine at Boudro's or Paesano's River Walk, singing their hearts out at Howl at the Moon, dancing the night away at Polly Esther's or knocking back a few brews at the Houston Street Alehouse. Not your average tourist trap, the River Walk entices many locals to brave the crowds and enjoy their own city.

As far as shopping malls go, this one is beautiful. Set right on the River Walk and attached to the Marriott River Center hotel, this mall is a dining, shopping and entertainment mecca. Although anchored by Foley's, Dillard's and an AMC movie theater, the mall offers scores of specialty shops and gift stores, as well as one of the largest parking garages downtown.

Musical groups and dance troupes perform nightly during the summer months at the lagoon in the middle of the mall. Visitors can also board barges for tours of the River Walk from the lower level.

Southwest School for Art & Craft

Teaching facility and center for local artisans

Originally home to the Ursuline Academy School for Girls in the 19th century, this historic property was purchased in 1965 by the San Antonio Conservation Society. The Society feared demolition and decided to save the 10 acres. With reflections of French design, the conglomeration of small buildings is beautiful, especially the small chapel adorned with amazing stained glass. Today the center is where creative adult and child artisans of all skill levels learn and teach. With expert instructors, this is the place to learn traditional and contemporary arts and crafts. Even if you are not interested in taking a class, stroll through the grounds and visit the art gallery, the chapel and the Copper Kitchen Restaurant.

Landmark Hotel

San Antonio, TX 78205

There is no doubt that the St. Anthony is one of the classiest, most elegant hotels around. Since 1909, this four-star hotel has been a home away from home for thousands of visitors as well as a few celebrities, including John Wayne. It's perfectly situated downtown, as it is far enough away from the throngs for you to spend your wedding night here, but close enough to host a festive weekend getaway. The River Walk, the Alamo and the Municipal Auditorium are all within walking distance, as are many shops and restaurants that add to the charm of this downtown jewel. There are 22,200 square feet of meeting space here, including a 3,600 square-foot ballroom, a 350-450 person junior ballroom and 20 meeting rooms. Guest rooms include hairdryer, coffeepot, ironing board and iron, data port and voicemail. The outdoor pool is heated and Playstations are also available.
