Travel by train to points north, including Solana Beach, Encinitas, and Oceanside, or on up through Orange County, Los Angeles and Santa Barbara. "First Class" offers better seats and a free newspaper, but the standard class is comfortable. The Amtrak tracks snake through pleasant canyon country on the way out of San Diego, and then hug so close to the coastline and crashing waves that it looks like the water is about to cover the tracks at some spots.
