This establishment was the first to become a destination in its own right. Dark woods, a low ceiling and candlelit tables contribute to a quiet, intimate atmosphere. American food rules here and that means beef and lots of it, combined with a few fish dishes and a single sandwich, the Texas Cheeseburger served with Steak Fries. Full bar service is offered.

A sturdy, spicy meal offered here is the Chimichange de Pollo, a deep-fried flour tortilla wrapped around chicken and topped with melted cheese, chile sauce and tomatillo-jalapeno salsa. Not sure about spicy Mexican food? A good compromise is the Carne Asada Plate, flavorful sirloin steak quick-seared and served with refried beans, Mexican rice and guacamole. Ten different beers on draft, a full bar and appetizers are available in the Coyote Cantina or served to your table. Patio dining puts you in the middle of Old Town shoppers and gawkers.

This restaurant offers a slick modernist atmosphere and a trendy Generation X/Y crowd to match. Depending on the diner's mood, this open, metallic, black, white and gray restaurant lit with flame-colored lighting can seem limitless and expansive, or cold and industrial. "Modern American" cuisine is the approach here, which in these times means a richly varied menu where Gourmet Wontons elbow jerk Scallops and Japanese Eggplant shakes hands with Portabella Mushrooms.

Cinema fans will love this movie-themed venue. Movie posters plaster the walls, while wooden captain's chairs surround the plain tables that might have come from your aunt's dining room. The Grille is a little short on grilled items, but does supply a selection of sandwiches and light eats. Gazing at Pacific beach, buzzing with surfers, bikers, and beachcombers, is only one of the delights of dining at JRDN, the restaurant on the Ocean-front ground floor of the swanky Tower 23 hotel. Aside from the excellent view and sweet ocean breezes, the food is delicious and the drink selection is excellent. The chef uses local produce and hand selected meats and seafood to prepare diverse dishes. The Lobster B.L.T., served with toasted brioche and tarragon aioli, comes bursting with fresh lobster meat, along with a side of yummy fries. Though exorbitant drink rates might sting, the food is very reasonably priced. The indoor bar area has a pleasant, poshy ambiance of its own, echoing the sea with walls made of white chrome shaped into vertical waves.
