Located on the waterfront in Seaport Village, the fare here ranges from familiar favorites to exotic house specialties collected from the four corners of the world during the owner's surfing travels. From burgers spiked with Hawaiian chutney to the Cajun Tuna Seafood Platter, the recipes begin with common ingredients, but with exotic spices and sauces, they turn into true island delights. The setting is laid-back and casual, but remember to wear your Hawaiian prints to fit in perfectly with the decor.

Housed in a former chain restaurant's discarded shell, this Asian gem offers foods hard to find outside of Vietnam. The decor is simple, featuring floral patterned chairs and Vietnamese folk art. Rare delicacies rule the day, including dishes made with deer and wild boar, plus an abundance of seafoods. Vegetarians will delight in the textured tofu offerings, which include chewy chicken-like Do Chay Kho, tofu complete with skin, molded from pure soybeans.

This eclectic restaurant claims to have a "dish for everyone." Hungry guests choose from dishes with origins from Mexico, India, the Pacific Rim, Italy or the United States. Nami

Cal-Asian cuisine
501 University Avenue
(Fifth Street and University)
San Diego, CA 92103
United States
+1 619 297 7888
Asian fusion cuisine plus sharp sushi make this restaurant popular among locals. The bright big-windowed corner location is far from intimate, but it is a great spot for some serious people watching. Almost all Asian cuisines are represented somehow in the entree items. Grilled Black Pepper-Crusted New York Steak is a highly-evolved cousin of a stir-fried Chinese pepper steak. Or try Jumbo Prawns relaxing over Thai-style noodles. The fusion is never confusion and it always results in a tasty new take on old favorites.

Seafood extravaganza
1640 Camino del Rio North
(Suite 341)
San Diego, CA 92108
United States
+1 619 295 9774
This sparkling seafood buffet is perfect for those who are both hungry and health-conscious. The decor is slick and sanitary yet comfortable, with a modern charm. The offerings change daily, but the buffet stations can usually be relied on to produce dozens of kinds of sushi, shrimp in several different styles of preparation, snow crab claws, and even lobster. Add to this a seemingly endless variety of salads, everything from romaine to soybean and a naughty selection of desserts, and you begin to have an idea why this restaurant is popular.

Sophisticated and sexy decor is the background for potent drinks and 21st-century Chinese food offered here. If the mysterious, stylish architecture of northern China intrigues you, then you will enjoy the giant horse statues holding up the eaves and the replica guardian statues displayed museum-style between the tables. The slickly trained staff makes sauces at the table and delivers extraordinary Chinese dishes. The Peking Dumplings are outstanding; best enjoyed fried and anointed with a perfect lightly spiced sauce. There is a full bar and an extensive wine list.

An eclectic paradise
875 Prospect St
San Diego, CA 92037

This trendy spot is frequented by La Jolla locals, who rave about the atmosphere as much as the cuisine. Named after a trendy nightclub district in Tokyo, the restaurant uses the ancient art of Feng Shui to create a balanced and peaceful decor complete with a 600-gallon tropical fish tank. The Asian Tapas menu offers Indonesian Tiger Shrimp Skewers and one most unusual dish, Mongolian Shredded Duck Quesadilla, served with spicy guacamole. Seafood fanatics may enjoy the Hawaiian Mahi Mahi on Kim Chee, complete with roasted banana sauce and pineapple salsa.

Top Thai tastes

United States

This establishment was previously known as Lemon Grass, but has always been owned by the same family. Richly carved, comfortable furnishings greet diners. The food is splendid, combining fresh ingredients with the endless array of spices and flavorings typical of Thai cuisine. Start with the Siam Forest Salad, with its unique peanut-based dressing over snapping-fresh greens, firm bean curd, cucumbers and tomatoes. For an entree, consider the Royal Duckling, a half duck marinated in spices and served with several tasty sauces.

Thai Foon

Will blow your taste buds away
540 University Avenue
San Diego, CA 92103
United States
+1 619 297 8424
This cheerful, quirky Thai restaurant is located in the heart of Hillcrest. The typhoon theme, with blown-away objects glued to the walls, may not please everyone as a restaurant interior, but it is different. Mirrored walls and the street-side windows enhance the perceived size of what is a small restaurant space. Noodle dishes are available with your choice of meat (or vegetarian textured tofu).

Todai Seafood Buffet

Extraordinary selection
2828 Camino del Rio South
(Off Highway 8 at Texas Street)
San Diego, CA 92108
United States
+1 619 299 8996
http://www.todai.com
First-time visitors are awed at this expansive buffet. Customers enter through an awning that resembles a large whale swallowing them up. Once inside, the atmosphere is straight out of Tokyo: high ceilings, plain, almost industrial walls, broken occasionally only by television screens showing programs on undersea life. It can be noisy and no one comes here for slow, romantic dinners; they come to eat. A long section of the buffet is devoted to sushi, prepared by a constantly busy team of chefs located just behind the buffet.

Tofu House

Tofu lovers, enjoy!
4646 Convoy Street
(Suite 116)
San Diego, CA 92111
United States
+1 858 576 6433
If you like tofu, you will love this place. Tucked away in a strip mall amidst other Asian restaurants on Convoy Street, this unassuming Korean restaurant specializes in tofu dishes. The basic ingredient, tofu in a special soybean broth, is the same in every dish, but you can have it with seafood, beef, pork, kimchee or mushroom. The level of spiciness varies. Crack an egg over the steaming concoction and the result is a delicious meal accompanied by rice, soup, and a variety of Korean side dishes.

World Curry

Curry everyone!
1433 Garnet Avenue
San Diego, CA 92109
United States
+1 858 270 4455
http://www.worldcurry.com
Hankering for curry? Head to this gem in Pacific Beach whose unassuming facade does not begin to hint at the delectable fiery dishes that await within. The only snag comes from actually having to choose from the wide selection of Thai, Indian, Japanese, Caribbean and Singaporean curries on the menu. For the undecided, the Panang and Mussaman curries are excellent. Or better yet, bring friends and try them all. The menu is very reasonably priced, making this a tasty budget choice.
