This spot is an ultra-popular diner in Carlsbad Village. Inside, one long counter, with vinyl-covered stools, bears the resemblance of a traditional American diner. Guests also have the option to sit outside, with a few umbrella-topped tables set along the street corner. Yet, be forewarned that traffic is busy and the noise level is significant. For breakfast, try one of Al's Omelets. Or choose from Strawberry, Macadamia Nut and Banana-Pecan Waffles. Traditional lunch specials include Meat Loaf and Mashed Potatoes and Liver and Onions. The main street of downtown Encinitas hosts a variety of independent shops and restaurants, yet this gem is often unnoticed by tourists. Of course, the locals know it well, visiting this spot daily for fresh baked treats. Many customers opt for a slice of Zucchini Bread or Carrot Cake. Yet, those "in the know" will inform you that nothing beats the fresh-baked bread rolls, still warm from the oven, served with homemade raspberry jam. Theme restaurants spend millions trying to re-create what this unashamed coffee shop really is: a holdover from the 1950s, relatively unscathed by remodeling. This restaurant's charm is in its simplicity. It is plain, fun and comfortable, with "genuine naughahyde" booths lining the windows, a counter in the rear and cooks on parade behind the pass-through window. Cheap and good, the breakfast special includes pancakes or a waffle, plus two eggs, bacon and sausage. Dinner specials vary, but can include dishes like the tasty Barbecue Boneless Chicken Breast. Unlike most of San Diego's trendy outdoor restaurants, this venue is a throwback to the days of the genuine steakhouse style. No outdoor dining here; this restaurant prides itself in its den-like quality that keeps the mind focused on what's at hand - sumptuous red meats properly prepared to order. Beef is the order of the day here although there are some fish and chicken dishes. A full bar and extensive wine list are available. Review © 2007, Wcities |

20 years of tradition |
3906 Convoy Street San Diego, CA 92111 United States +1 858 565 1740 http://www.originalpancakehous... |
This breakfast spot has been serving San Diego locals for more than 20 years. The cooks still make everything from scratch, including fresh-squeezed orange juice. The restaurant still features specially blended coffee, and it still has what is allegedly "the world's most copied menu". Whatever breakfast you are craving for - you will not walk away hungry. The Swedish Pancake is covered with imported Lingo berries from Sweden and is the size of a pie. The Eggs Benedict could feed three. It is easy to see why this spot has won numerous awards. With large portions (both mild and familiar), this restaurant is a favorite among families and seniors. A fair amount of noise and commotion fill the air here, yet the atmosphere is not distracting. Most customers are regulars who come for the inexpensive menu selections and friendly service. Most entrees are traditional favorites. Newcomers may want to try the Banana-Pecan Pancakes or Southwestern Crepes. The house specialty is the Hobo Banquet consisting of potatoes, eggs, cheese and onions. Review © 2007, Wcities |

An American favorite, the potato, is featured at this North County spot. Serving breakfast and lunch, the restaurant uses low-fat milk and cholesterol-free oil, allowing the health conscious to enjoy the specialties. Three-egg omelets are a breakfast menu favorite. Of course, American fries may be added to any of the breakfast entrees. For lunch, try a baked potato topped with cheese, butter, sour cream, tomatoes, mushrooms, onions, bell peppers, broccoli or jalapenos. Beyond potatoes, guests may select from numerous sandwiches on the menu. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Seafood specialties also cover the menu. Try the Clam Strips or Calamari Rings. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This is the type of restaurant where you may read the newspaper and relax for hours, while dining on homemade breakfast favorites. Begin your day with an entree from the "Great Starts" section of the menu. The Ham Scramble is a popular choice. For those diners who prefer a lighter meal, consider the Fresh Fruit Bowl, which offers seasonal fruit with nuts and raisins. Sandwiches are served later in the day, with Avocado & Swiss and the Tuna Melt reigning as customer favorites. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Whether you are looking for a classy lunch bistro or a shop to obtain biscotti and tartes, this establishment is the place. Locals rave about the bakery and the atmosphere is first-class yet refrains from formality. For breakfast, consider Eggs Benedict. Later in the day, try the Brie Cheese Sandwich or the Vegetarian Sandwich. Best of all, a large glass case features fresh baked desserts. Try one of the tartes, available in individual or nine inch sizes. Biscotti, Chocolate Mousse, Scones, Danishes and Creme Brulee are also customer favorites. Only cash is accepted. Everybody Must Get Stoned! |
1999 Citracado Parkway (between Andreasan Drive & Vineyard Avenue) San Diego, CA 92029 United States +1 760 471 4999 http://www.stoneworldbistro.com/ |
Perched high on a hill in the industrial outskirts of Escondido, Stone World Bistro is quite literally a desert oasis. The cavernous dining room is adorned with slabs of granite, beams of steel and a 30-foot bamboo tree. The bar sits in one corner, in the shadow of the brewery's series of two-story brew kettles (which you can see up close and personal on the free daily brewery tour). Across the way, airplane-hangar-like doors open onto the facility's centerpiece, a beautifully manicured patio and garden about the size of a city block. Pathways snake past lawns, fountains, a creek, and a fire pit. Pick a spot and down a pint or two of the award-winning homemade beer (including rarities like Oaked Arrogant Bastard). The food menu is a cut above your average pub grub, focusing on locally raised seasonal ingredients and exotic preparations. The on-site gift shop features everything from Arrogant Bastard hoodies to freshly jugged beer to go. See website for full menu, beer info, event calendar, online shopping, tour schedule and more.
