This spot is an ultra-popular diner in Carlsbad Village. Inside, one long counter, with vinyl-covered stools, bears the resemblance of a traditional American diner. Guests also have the option to sit outside, with a few umbrella-topped tables set along the street corner. Yet, be forewarned that traffic is busy and the noise level is significant. The main street of downtown Encinitas hosts a variety of independent shops and restaurants, yet this gem is often unnoticed by tourists. Of course, the locals know it well, visiting this spot daily for fresh baked treats. Many customers opt for a slice of Zucchini Bread or Carrot Cake. Yet, those "in the know" will inform you that nothing beats the fresh-baked bread rolls, still warm from the oven, served with homemade raspberry jam. Consider a cup of homemade Apple Cider along with your bread.

Theme restaurants spend millions trying to re-create what this unashamed coffee shop really is: a holdover from the 1950s, relatively unscathed by remodeling. This restaurant's charm is in its simplicity. It is plain, fun and comfortable, with "genuine naughahyde" booths lining the windows, a counter in the rear and cooks on parade behind the pass-through window. Cheap and good, the breakfast special includes pancakes or a waffle, plus two eggs, bacon and sausage. Dinner specials vary, but can include dishes like the tasty Barbecue Boneless Chicken Breast.

Kono's serves up a beach breakfast that's popular with locals and tourists alike, which can lead to an intimidating line- but it moves quickly and there are surf videos to watch and quotes of the week to laugh about. If customers choose to walk outside (burgers and other lunch foods are available, and breakfast is served all day), their meal comes with a view: the ocean and all the characters strolling by. Kono's is as casual as the beach, and plates are big and inexpensive.

Longboarder Cafe

Cuisine for surfing fanatics
228 North Coast Highway
San Diego, CA 92054
United States
+1 760 721 6776
Dedicated surfers have a dining home here. Enjoy typical American cuisine, while basking in this restaurant's surfing theme. One wall is entirely covered in a bright, beach scene mural. The Longboarder AM is the top breakfast specialty. This meal includes pancakes or French toast, bacon or sausage, two eggs and fruit. Later in the day, consider the Longboarder PM (a sandwich with turkey, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, sprouts, avocado and pepper cheese). Served with your choice of sides, this entree is sufficient for two people.

Mission Coffee Cup Cafe

Most crowded spot in town
1109 Wall St
San Diego, CA 92037
United States
+1 858 454 2819
The decor is virtually non-existent and the atmosphere is ultra-casual, yet this place is arguably the most crowded cafe in all of La Jolla. It is not on the beaten path of La Jolla's main streets, making it a well-kept secret among locals who flock here daily. Expect a busy and noisy atmosphere, compliments of the full-view kitchen. Breakfast options include Blackberry Pancakes and Mission French Toast. With sandwiches and other lunch options available, this makes for an excellent meeting spot or just a spot to meet new people.

Located about two miles northeast of Balboa Park, this wonderful early-day restaurant draws crowds from all over San Diego. Simple wooden tables and chairs are scattered about, giving this place a very informal atmosphere. Regular visitors love the blackberry-banana pancakes and the strawberry-granola pancakes. There is also a so-called Zen Breakfast composed of egg whites, tofu, zucchini and brown rice. For lunch, consider ordering Papa's Loco - an appetizer that can almost serve as a meal. Warm potatoes are covered with beans and cheese, providing a nice alternative to ordinary nachos.

Unlike most of San Diego's trendy outdoor restaurants, this venue is a throwback to the days of the genuine steakhouse style. No outdoor dining here; this restaurant prides itself in its den-like quality that keeps the mind focused on what's at hand - sumptuous red meats properly prepared to order. Beef is the order of the day here although there are some fish and chicken dishes. A full bar and extensive wine list are available.

This breakfast spot has been serving San Diego locals for more than 20 years. The cooks still make everything from scratch, including fresh-squeezed orange juice. The restaurant still features specially blended coffee, and it still has what is allegedly "the world's most copied menu". Whatever breakfast you are craving for - you will not walk away hungry. The Swedish Pancake is covered with imported Lingo berries from Sweden and is the size of a pie. The Eggs Benedict could feed three. It is easy to see why this spot has won numerous awards.

Most customers are regulars who come for the inexpensive menu selections and friendly service. Most entrees are traditional favorites. Newcomers may want to try the Banana-Pecan Pancakes or Southwestern Crepes. The house specialty is the Hobo Banquet consisting of potatoes, eggs, cheese and onions.

For those diners who prefer a lighter meal, consider the Fresh Fruit Bowl, which offers seasonal fruit with nuts and raisins. Perched high on a hill in the industrial outskirts of Escondido, Stone World Bistro is quite literally a desert oasis. The cavernous dining room is adorned with slabs of granite, beams of steel and a 30-foot bamboo tree. The bar sits in one corner, in the shadow of the brewery's series of two-story brew kettles (which you can see up close and personal on the free daily brewery tour). Across the way, airplane-hangar-like doors open onto the facility's centerpiece, a beautifully manicured patio and garden about the size of a city block. Pathways snake past lawns, fountains, a creek, and a fire pit. Pick a spot and down a pint or two of the award-winning homemade beer (including rarities like Oaked Arrogant Bastard). The food menu is a cut above your average pub grub, focusing on locally raised seasonal ingredients and exotic preparations. The on-site gift shop features everything from Arrogant Bastard hoodies to freshly jugged beer to go. See website for full menu, beer info, event calendar, online shopping, tour schedule and more.

San Diego, CA 92075

Family-owned since 1978, this restaurant offers home-style meals in a friendly atmosphere. The entryway hosts a piano and flowing fountain, yet the dining room, covered in wooden decor, is casual. Most guests select an entree from the breakfast menu, which is served all day. Try the Sunshine Garden Omelette combining three eggs with vegetables. Looking for a breakfast entree minus the eggs? Try Banana Pecan Pancakes or Crunchy French Toast, served with Granola and fresh berries. While breakfast selections dominate the menu, there are sandwich and hamburger entrees as well.
