You love Mexican food but you are tired of the traditional, predictable offerings. Take heart at this romantic destination that offers superb Southwestern cuisine. Entree items are truly original, such as the Smoked Chicken Quesaddillas that give a whole new flavor to this Mexican classic. Best of all, enjoy a fabulous ocean view when dining on the terrace, which is comfortable all year with heaters and a fireplace. The Margaritas are said to be the best in town.

San Diego, CA 92075
United States

http://www.thefishmarket.com
Featuring a cocktail bar, oyster bar, dining room and fish market, this spot is always crowded with San Diego locals. The fish is unbelievably fresh and all sauces, soups and sides are made on site daily. The menu changes daily, as entree choices are dependent upon fishing success. Generally, Smoked Fish tops the menu, with popular options including Pacific Swordfish and Pacific King Salmon. For those who prefer shellfish, consider Oysters Rockefeller or Clams Con Pesto. Lobster tails are a specialty for USD 38; many other dishes run USD12-18.

Osteria Del Pescatore

Pasta and wine
1201 Camino Del Mar
San Diego, CA 92014
United States
+1 858 509 9293
Whether you dine indoors or outside at this charming eatery, you will find an atmosphere that is upscale, yet still slightly casual. The inside dining room offers a gorgeous pastel mural and white linens. Meanwhile, gigantic potted plants and a brown awning decorate the outdoor patio. On the menu, pasta is the top seller. Consider Pasta Al Forno (shell pasta baked with ricotta cheese, parsley and tomato sauce). In addition, choose from Italian and California white and red wines, or from the special "Reserve Wines" list.

Pamplemousse Grille

Chef to the stars
514 Via de la Valle
San Diego, CA 92075
United States
+1 858 792 9090
http://www.pgrille.com/
Dark woods, elegant print tablecloths and fine glassware create a classy ambience at this formal restaurant. Yet, the chef and his cuisine are most notable here. Formerly a chef to Hollywood stars and top-ranked political figures, Chef Jeffrey Strauss has prepared entrees for Ronald Reagan's inauguration, as well as events for the late Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Top dinner picks include Lamb Stew, served with Oven-roasted Root Vegetables. Grilled Seafood Stew (with Lobster) is also popular.

Poseidon Restaurant

Dine with the dolphins
1670 Coast Boulevard
San Diego, CA 92014
United States
+1 858 755 9345
http://www.poseidon.signonsand...
This restaurant offers sandside dining on a beautiful patio. Fish dishes top the menu. The Poseidon Seafood Combo is a good choice, offering Deep-Fried Prawns, Scallops, Cod and Calamari Strips. A bit of advice: do not go during one of the rare California storms, as the waves can crash onto the patio. Do go around sunset, when you may be blessed with a visit from a pod of dolphins swimming parallel to the shore.

Red Tracton's

Best bet for steaks
550 Via de la Valle
San Diego, CA 92075
United States
+1 858 755 6600
After spending the day at the Del Mar Racetrack across the street, step inside this authentic American steakhouse and order drinks in the handsome dark-panelled bar, then top it off with a flavorful steak dinner. The venue offers prime cuts of beef with all the trimmings. There are also seafood and chicken entrees on the menu. Of course you will need to win big at the racetrack because the prices are rather steep, but well worth it.

Spices Thai Cafe

Tasty Thai
3810 Valley Centre Drive
(Suite 903)
San Diego, CA 92130

Delicious and authentic Thai cuisine at reasonable prices keeps this award-winning restaurant popular. Diners enjoy classic Thai dishes such as Pad Thai, a tasty noodle dish flavored with peanuts and lime juice, and Mee Krob, a crunchy, sweet noodle served as an appetizer or main dish. Other dishes range in spiciness and only the brave gourmet should ask for extra hot. There are traditional vegetarian dishes available as well. Other locations are in Carmel Valley and Rancho Bernardo.

Sushi Dokoro Shirahama

Informal sushi bar
1101 Camino Del Mar
San Diego, CA 92014
United States
+1 858 755 2969
This restaurant advertises, 'no fancy rolls,' which means basic, traditional sushi is the dominant fare here. The restaurant includes a few tiny tables, but the sushi bar monopolizes most of the space and attention. While novices are welcome at the sushi bar, most of this restaurant's patrons are experienced sushi pros. If you are a bit uneasy about sea life culinary adventures, just be sure to obtain the menu with full translation, lest you order an Anago Roll, not realizing it is an eel.
