Bombay Exotic Cuisine Of India

Everything's in the name
3975 Fifth Avenue
(Suite 100)
San Diego, CA 92103
United States

Visions of Bombay are all the more vivid at this straight forward Cal-Indian venue in downtown San Diego. Dine among Indian music and paintings, where the culinary gifts are exciting, flavorful and oh-so-spicy. The curry dishes hold their own with the best of them, as does everything else on the menu. For vegetarians, there is a wonderful array of taste-tempting vegetarian offerings. Dinner entrees start at $9. Lunch and dinner buffets are offered.

This restaurant's owners serve what they call, "royal Indian cuisine". Each specialty is carefully crafted, as if being prepared for Middle Eastern royalty. Consider Chicken Curry or Lamb Bhuna (lamb sauteed in spices and onions). Palak Paneer (homemade cottage cheese and spinach) is a popular vegetarian entree. The royal cuisine is served in an elaborate setting. A stone fountain accompanies the outdoor dining area. Inside, pink and burgundy decorations brighten the room, while ornate pictures cover the walls. The kitchen is open, in full view from the restaurant's entrance.

Jimmy Carter's Cafe

No politics, just delicious
3172 Fifth Avenue
San Diego, CA 92103
United States
+1 619 295 2070
This eclectic restaurant claims to have a "dish for everyone." Hungry guests choose from dishes with origins from Mexico, India, the Pacific Rim, Italy or the United States. For breakfast, try an Indian dish called Utthupam, a crepe filled with lentils and rice. For lunch, try any of the delicious salads or pastas. At dinnertime, the Boeuf Amsterdam is a six-ounce filet mignon topped with a sauce of bleu cheese, white wine and onions.

True Indian cuisine

San Diego, CA 92131
United States

Locals rave about this interesting Indian restaurant located in the Hillcrest section of San Diego. Indian music videos often play here, and handsome Indian paintings line the walls. Attractive tables covered with white tablecloths and surrounded by many plants provide a pleasant ambience. The most popular dishes include the Stuffed Lentil Crepes, Dosas and Tandoori entrees. Regular customers are pleased by the chef's refusal to Americanize any of these delicious dishes. Alcohol is usually only served when parties are held here.

Masala Restaurant

Masala is an Indian restaurant like no other. Here, an appetizer of naan and hummus is called "Love Story" (referring to the love between bread and dip). Little touches like this make dinner at Masala an experience to cherish. The décor blends contemporary chic with a dash of traditional Indian imagery. There is a whole menu just for chutney choices (try the date, the cranberry, the banana, the mango or the mint). The lengthy lists of chicken and lamb entrees (curried, tandooried or otherwise) will make you salivate. A number of fresh seafood specialties and luscious vegetarian dishes round out the offerings, and don't forget that the bar area rivals anything in the area in terms of downtown attitude. See website for full menu, chef bio, virtual tour and more.

Monsoon

This resturant serves authentic North-Indian cuisine. It offers all—from pipping-hot Pakoras to the mouth-watering Chicken Biryani and everything in between. You may have to wait a bit for your food as this place gets really busy during lunch. And the powerful aromas of exotic spices don't help the situation. Monsoon is affordable, and if you don't know what to eat, the friendly staff will help you out.

Royal India is considered to be the best Indian restaurant in the whole of downtown San Diego. The Cuisine served here is mainly North Indian, blending in unique flavors of all the Indian spices to create magic on your plate. The tandoori kebabs, curries like 'channa masala' and 'makhanwala', nan bread and the seafood, all are simply amazing. Royal India has a wonderful 10 foot waterfall right in the center which perfectly suits the distinctly Indian decor.

Step into a regal past and explore the fine cuisine of India. The pleasantly designed, gracious Indian decor is a perfect accompaniment to the fine cuisine. Gracious service makes even a light snack feel special, or enjoy the renowned self-serve luncheon buffet where fresh, fragrant foods tempt the senses. All made-to-order entrees can be ordered mild, medium or spicy. An excellent value is the red-seared Tandoori Chicken combined with Saag Gosht (a lamb curry with spinach). It is a perfect meal for two at this Gaslamp joint.

Step inside this authentic Indian venue and you will swear you are in Delhi or Mumbai. The atmosphere is low-key and the cuisine is refreshingly authentic. Tan and brown colors greet you in the dining room, from the walls to the conservative pictures. White tablecloths are the exception to this color scheme, accompanied by a white vase of flowers on every table. On the menu, Tandoori specialties are popular, including the Chicken Garlic Kabab and Tandoori Shrimp. Vegetarians may consider Bengan Bhartha, offering eggplant, peas, onions, garlic, ginger and tomatoes.

World Curry

Curry everyone!
1433 Garnet Avenue
San Diego, CA 92109
United States
+1 858 270 4455
http://www.worldcurry.com
Hankering for curry? Head to this gem in Pacific Beach whose unassuming facade does not begin to hint at the delectable fiery dishes that await within. The only snag comes from actually having to choose from the wide selection of Thai, Indian, Japanese, Caribbean and Singaporean curries on the menu. For the undecided, the Panang and Mussaman curries are excellent. Or better yet, bring friends and try them all. The menu is very reasonably priced, making this a tasty budget choice.
