Sixth Avenue Bistro

Casual downtown dining
1165 Sixth Avenue
(corner of Sixth and B)
San Diego, CA 92101
United States
+1 619 239 4194
http://www.sixthavenuebistro.com/
Popular with local business people working in the high-rise towers of downtown San Diego, this eatery focuses on sandwiches, salads and a few Southern-influenced entrees. The menu here reflects the fact that the restaurant is busiest at breakfast and lunch, and closes too early to be a serious contender for dinner. The best bet for a sandwich is the unusual Cocoa Beach Shrimp Po-Boy, featuring Florida rock shrimp in a New Orleans-style remoulade sauce cradled on a fresh French baguette. It is big, high-calorie and worth every penny. Full service catering and complete bar service is offered.

St. Germain's Cafe

Relaxing atmosphere
1010 I Street
Highway 101
San Diego, CA 92024
United States
+1 760 753 5411
This is the type of restaurant where you may read the newspaper and relax for hours, while dining on homemade breakfast favorites. Begin your day with an entree from the "Great Starts" section of the menu. The Ham Scramble is a popular choice. For those diners who prefer a lighter meal, consider the Fresh Fruit Bowl, which offers seasonal fruit with nuts and raisins. Sandwiches are served later in the day, with Avocado & Swiss and the Tuna Melt reigning as customer favorites.

Stingaree

Three-Level Nightclub Deluxe
454 6th Avenue
San Diego, CA 92101
United States
+1 619 544 9500
http://www.stingsandiego.com/
Stingaree is a Goliath of a night spot. The ground floor is a proper restaurant/nightclub, replete with a full dinner menu and a full dance floor. The bar is famous for its extensive wine list and specialty cocktails (including the "Berry Manilow"). The food menu is awash in French, Italian and Mediterranean influences, all served with a dash of Californian flair, and always full of the freshest local and seasonal ingredients. Choose from small plates like the seafood "Menage a Trois," or no-nonsense entrees like Lobster Linguine. Up one flight of stairs is the Mezzanine, a more intimate lounge-style area where revelers can sip drinks and survey the action down below. Keep heading skyward and you'll find yourself on the Rooftop Oasis with a fire pit by your side and a cool breeze in your hair. See website for menus, wine list, happy hour info, event calendar, online reservations and more.

Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens

Everybody Must Get Stoned!
1999 Citracado Parkway
(between Andreasan Drive & Vineyard Avenue)
San Diego, CA 92029
United States
+1 760 471 4999
http://www.stoneworldbistro.com/
Perched high on a hill in the industrial outskirts of Escondido, Stone World Bistro is quite literally a desert oasis. The cavernous dining room is adorned with slabs of granite, beams of steel and a 30-foot bamboo tree. The bar sits in one corner, in the shadow of the brewery's series of two-story brew kettles (which you can see up close and personal on the free daily brewery tour). Across the way, airplane-hangar-like doors open onto the facility's centerpiece, a beautifully manicured patio and garden about the size of a city block. Pathways snake past lawns, fountains, a creek, and a fire pit. Pick a spot and down a pint or two of the award-winning homemade beer (including rarities like Oaked Arrogant Bastard). The food menu is a cut above your average pub grub, focusing on locally raised seasonal ingredients and exotic preparations. The on-site gift shop features everything from Arrogant Bastard hoodies to freshly jugged beer to go. See website for full menu, beer info, event calendar, online shopping, tour schedule and more.

Sushi Deli One

Serving sushi and sushi
828 Broadway
San Diego, CA 92101
United States
+1 619 231 9597
Located in downtown San Diego, this sushi bar is frequented by business people and locals. Japanese entrees, such as Sesame Chicken and Tempura, are available. Yet, the primary item on the menu is sushi. With numerous sushi combos (serving a medley of different rolls), this establishment has become a favorite among the downtown crowd.

Sushi Dokoro Shirahama

Informal sushi bar
1101 Camino Del Mar
San Diego, CA 92014
United States
+1 858 755 2969
This restaurant advertises, 'no fancy rolls,' which means basic, traditional sushi is the dominant fare here. The restaurant includes a few tiny tables, but the sushi bar monopolizes most of the space and attention. While novices are welcome at the sushi bar, most of this restaurant's patrons are experienced sushi pros. If you are a bit uneasy about sea life culinary adventures, just be sure to obtain the menu with full translation, lest you order an Anago Roll, not realizing it is an eel.

T's Cafe

A family establishment
271 North Highway 101
San Diego, CA 92075
United States
+1 858 755 7642
Family-owned since 1978, this restaurant offers home-style meals in a friendly atmosphere. The entryway hosts a piano and flowing fountain, yet the dining room, covered in wooden decor, is casual. Most guests select an entree from the breakfast menu, which is served all day. Try the Sunshine Garden Omelette combining three eggs with vegetables. Looking for a breakfast entree minus the eggs? Try Banana Pecan Pancakes or Crunchy French Toast, served with Granola and fresh berries. While breakfast selections dominate the menu, there are sandwich and hamburger entrees as well.

The Liars' Club

Eats, Drinks, Rock Music & Lies!
3844 Mission Boulevard
San Diego, CA 92109
United States
+1 858 488 2340
http://www.liarsclubsd.com/
Having moved from its original location, The Liars' Club is still many things to many people. Local foodies know this is the place for hearty grilled meals at low prices. Punk rockers come for the juke box, which is heavy on the Pogues, the Clash and Mr. Johnny Cash. Penny pinchers keep track of all the different daily Happy Hour specials (such as $2 you-call-it Tuesdays, or Cask Ale Fridays). Party girls prance in for a rainbow of colorful and expertly mixed cocktails. Beer enthusiasts worship the club's tremendous variety of rare imports and micros (including locally produced award winners from the likes of Port Brewing). Clotheshorses fall all over themselves trying to decide from among the wide selection of crude-but-distinctive souvenir Liars' Club t-shirts, hats and undergarments (each emblazoned with its own special lie). See website for menu, beer list, amusing e-mail newsletter, online gift shop and (of course) lies.

Village Grille

Best hamburgers in town
2833 State Street
San Diego, CA 92008
United States
+1 760 729 3601
Named in the local paper for the 'best hamburgers' five years in a row, this Carlsbad spot offers the menu and atmosphere of a traditional American diner. A few plastic tables are set on the outside street corner. Meanwhile, inside seating consists of one counter with white, vinyl stools. Watch your order being prepared on the grill, located directly behind the counter. The breakfast menu is loaded with traditional American favorites. Order bacon and eggs or pancakes. At lunchtime, try the Green Chiliburger, Double Bacon Cheeseburger or Tuna Melt.
