Alpine Inn

Worth the climb
2225 Alpine Boulevard
San Diego, CA 91901-2116
United States
+1 619 445 5172
For a small mountain town, Alpine has more than its fair share of restaurants worth the 25-minute drive from downtown San Diego. This establishment was the first to become a destination in its own right. Dark woods, a low ceiling and candlelit tables contribute to a quiet, intimate atmosphere. American food rules here and that means beef and lots of it, combined with a few fish dishes and a single sandwich, the Texas Cheeseburger served with Steak Fries. Full bar service is offered.

A man-made lake provides refuge to wildlife and dozens of tame ducks, providing entertainment for the diners at this long-established San Diego seafood restaurant. It also makes the hour-long dinnertime wait much more pleasant for kids and adults alike. Seafood is the best bet here and the daily specials offer great value and delicious preparation. The Clam Chowder, from Anthony's matriarch Mamma Ghio, is renowned, a rich red broth liberally studded with tender clams. Disabled access is limited around the lake area and table clearances can be tight.

The Ghio family started out as fishermen plying the San Diego waters. In the late 1940s, clan matriarch Mama Ghio opened a small seafood diner. Her restaurants have been wildly successful for years, and though she's no longer overseeing them, her spirit lives on. At this venue, the long glassed-in dining room offers great views of San Diego Bay. On the menu, you will find fresh fish of all descriptions, changing daily. No meal is complete without a bowl of Mama Ghio's red clam chowder. Reservations are not accepted; expect a long wait.

This San Diego institution is considered one of the most elegant restaurants in town. Right on the water, the gourmet seafood entrees are served beautifully by a courteous staff. Enjoy lobster, scallops, shrimp and a variety of fish. The Baquietta Bass is a specialty, and there is a special Chef's Tasting Menu for USD55 per person. Other prices range from USD25-28. Some might consider this spot old-fashioned, but it is a great place for special occasions and parties.

This five-star, award-winning restaurant features an atmosphere that is sophisticated and mildly tropical-flavored, part of the Polynesian-themed Catamaran Hotel. The chefs are creative, but never silly. The ingredients are combined because they work, whether it is the Chilled Cantaloupe Soup, served with Mango Garnish, or Colorado Lamb Potstickers with Spicy Sweet Sriracha Sauce. There are many inexpensive options, all prepared with care, including personal gourmet pizzas and a Fresh Ahi Tuna Sandwich with Arugula, Onions and Soy-Wasabi Aioli. Reservations are usually imperative.

This is a charming waterfront restaurant located on the "undiscovered" Chula Vista bay coast. The old-fashioned wooden building is new, but looks like it was imported whole from the New England seacoast. Inside, diners enjoy ceilings high enough to hold small boats on display. Outside, diners can enjoy a bay side table on the patio. All the food is good here, from a delicious clam chowder with smoky bacon to live Maine lobster and Hawaiian fish. The adjacent Blue Lagoon Lounge offers a happy hour daily.

The exterior is not anything special, with a partly enclosed patio on one side of a vaguely English-looking part-timbered building. However, the jammed parking lot is an indication of this spot's popularity. Try a Bully Burger, served with a fresh salad and choice of potato; the good deals extend into heartier fare, including prime rib, steaks, seafood and pasta. Expect a wait most nights. Dinner is served until midnight, every night. There is a good wine list, plus a range of beers. The full bar offers premium pours.

This lively restaurant is not for those seeking out a quiet seafood meal, but if you are ready to party, this place is it. Periodically, sirens go off, the dance lights spin, music comes up and a carefully-rehearsed but apparently impromptu conga line of waiters and waitresses snakes through the dining area. Messy seafood is the main course here: crab claws, peel and eat shrimp, and other delights from the sea. It is popular with the college-age date crowd and young families.

Masala is an Indian restaurant like no other. Here, an appetizer of naan and hummus is called "Love Story" (referring to the love between bread and dip). Little touches like this make dinner at Masala an experience to cherish. The décor blends contemporary chic with a dash of traditional Indian imagery. There is a whole menu just for chutney choices (try the date, the cranberry, the banana, the mango or the mint). The lengthy lists of chicken and lamb entrees (curried, tandooried or otherwise) will make you salivate. Try the fried clams or fish and chips. For the more daring diner, Octopus Ceviche is featured on the menu.

Stingaree

Three-Level Nightclub Deluxe
454 6th Avenue
San Diego, CA 92101
United States
+1 619 544 9500
http://www.stingsandiego.com/
Stingaree is a Goliath of a night spot. The ground floor is a proper restaurant/nightclub, replete with a full dinner menu and a full dance floor. The bar is famous for its extensive wine list and specialty cocktails (including the "Berry Manilow"). The food menu is awash in French, Italian and Mediterranean influences, all served with a dash of Californian flair, and always full of the freshest local and seasonal ingredients. Choose from small plates like the seafood "Menage a Trois," or no-nonsense entrees like Lobster Linguine. Up one flight of stairs is the Mezzanine, a more intimate lounge-style area where revelers can sip drinks and survey the action down below. Keep heading skyward and you'll find yourself on the Rooftop Oasis with a fire pit by your side and a cool breeze in your hair. See website for menus, wine list, happy hour info, event calendar, online reservations and more.

Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens

Everybody Must Get Stoned!

(between Andreasan Drive & Vineyard Avenue)
San Diego, CA 92029
United States

Perched high on a hill in the industrial outskirts of Escondido, Stone World Bistro is quite literally a desert oasis. The cavernous dining room is adorned with slabs of granite, beams of steel and a 30-foot bamboo tree. The bar sits in one corner, in the shadow of the brewery's series of two-story brew kettles (which you can see up close and personal on the free daily brewery tour). Across the way, airplane-hangar-like doors open onto the facility's centerpiece, a beautifully manicured patio and garden about the size of a city block. Pathways snake past lawns, fountains, a creek, and a fire pit. Pick a spot and down a pint or two of the award-winning homemade beer (including rarities like Oaked Arrogant Bastard). The food menu is a cut above your average pub grub, focusing on locally raised seasonal ingredients and exotic preparations. The on-site gift shop features everything from Arrogant Bastard hoodies to freshly jugged beer to go. See website for full menu, beer info, event calendar, online shopping, tour schedule and more.

Located just east of the Old Town and Mission Hills sections of San Diego, this popular restaurant is decorated like a cozy English pub. Grab a tasty breakfast or stop in for lunch or dinner. Local residents are particularly fond of the various fish entrees, though a basic bar menu including hamburgers is also available. Great steak, salads and soups can be ordered as well. Whatever your culinary preference, this venue offers an ideal atmosphere for a relaxing and informal meal.

Be it grilled fish or fried, Tin Fish serves delicious fare. Open for lunch and dinner, it is most known for its Fish Tacos. The 8-piece Shrimp Platter is also exceptional. The portions are very generous, so order carefully.

First-time visitors are awed at this expansive buffet. Customers enter through an awning that resembles a large whale swallowing them up. Once inside, the atmosphere is straight out of Tokyo: high ceilings, plain, almost industrial walls, broken occasionally only by television screens showing programs on undersea life. It can be noisy and no one comes here for slow, romantic dinners; they come to eat. A long section of the buffet is devoted to sushi, prepared by a constantly busy team of chefs located just behind the buffet.

Located near the San Diego International Airport at the far tip of Harbor Island, this landmark lighthouse-style restaurant has been delighting patrons for years. The bayside view is spectacular, with Navy ships along the opposite shore and plenty of sailboats passing in the channel. Seafood dishes are brilliantly prepared, but the restaurant also offers steaks and other meats. Patrons are generally casually dressed, and there is entertainment in the adjacent lounge most nights.

This fine dining seafood favorite overlooks the beauty of the bay, and the extensive menu offers consistently fresh and flavorful mesquite charbroiled entrees. You will not soon forget the Canadian farm-raised salmon, as it literally melts in your mouth. The oysters, scallops, shrimp and calamari are equally delicious. The menu changes daily and all seafood selections are fresh.
