Worth the climb |
2225 Alpine Boulevard San Diego, CA 91901-2116 United States +1 619 445 5172 |
For a small mountain town, Alpine has more than its fair share of restaurants worth the 25-minute drive from downtown San Diego. This establishment was the first to become a destination in its own right. Dark woods, a low ceiling and candlelit tables contribute to a quiet, intimate atmosphere. American food rules here and that means beef and lots of it, combined with a few fish dishes and a single sandwich, the Texas Cheeseburger served with Steak Fries. Full bar service is offered. A man-made lake provides refuge to wildlife and dozens of tame ducks, providing entertainment for the diners at this long-established San Diego seafood restaurant. It also makes the hour-long dinnertime wait much more pleasant for kids and adults alike. Seafood is the best bet here and the daily specials offer great value and delicious preparation. The Clam Chowder, from Anthony's matriarch Mamma Ghio, is renowned, a rich red broth liberally studded with tender clams. Disabled access is limited around the lake area and table clearances can be tight. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The Ghio family started out as fishermen plying the San Diego waters. In the late 1940s, clan matriarch Mama Ghio opened a small seafood diner. Her restaurants have been wildly successful for years, and though she's no longer overseeing them, her spirit lives on. At this venue, the long glassed-in dining room offers great views of San Diego Bay. On the menu, you will find fresh fish of all descriptions, changing daily. No meal is complete without a bowl of Mama Ghio's red clam chowder. Reservations are not accepted; expect a long wait. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This San Diego institution is considered one of the most elegant restaurants in town. Right on the water, the gourmet seafood entrees are served beautifully by a courteous staff. Enjoy lobster, scallops, shrimp and a variety of fish. The Baquietta Bass is a specialty, and there is a special Chef's Tasting Menu for USD55 per person. Other prices range from USD25-28. This five-star, award-winning restaurant features an atmosphere that is sophisticated and mildly tropical-flavored, part of the Polynesian-themed Catamaran Hotel. The chefs are creative, but never silly. The ingredients are combined because they work, whether it is the Chilled Cantaloupe Soup, served with Mango Garnish, or Colorado Lamb Potstickers with Spicy Sweet Sriracha Sauce. There are many inexpensive options, all prepared with care, including personal gourmet pizzas and a Fresh Ahi Tuna Sandwich with Arugula, Onions and Soy-Wasabi Aioli. This is a charming waterfront restaurant located on the "undiscovered" Chula Vista bay coast. The exterior is not anything special, with a partly enclosed patio on one side of a vaguely English-looking part-timbered building. However, the jammed parking lot is an indication of this spot's popularity. Pictures of family and friends decorate the inside walls, while the outdoor seating is complemented by greenery and gaslamps. Pizzas, pasta and seafood are the featured entrees. Happy Crabbing |
7610 Hazard Center Dr San Diego, CA 92108 United States +1 619 260 1111 http://www.joescrabshack.com |
This lively restaurant is not for those seeking out a quiet seafood meal, but if you are ready to party, this place is it. Periodically, sirens go off, the dance lights spin, music comes up and a carefully-rehearsed but apparently impromptu conga line of waiters and waitresses snakes through the dining area. Messy seafood is the main course here: crab claws, peel and eat shrimp, and other delights from the sea. It is popular with the college-age date crowd and young families. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This spot is perfect for the ultimate night out in a romantic, sophisticated seaside setting. Watch the tide crash just inches away from the large dining room windows or dance the night away with music provided by a live band in this restaurant's Spindrift Cocktail Lounge. Consider an entree from the "sea" menu. Sterling Salmon in a Crimini Duxelle Coat and Lemon Grass-Ginger Oil Basted Maine Lobster Tail are popular options. If you prefer a meal from the "land" menu, try Pan Roasted Country Meadow Rack of Lamb. Jackets are preferred. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Masala is an Indian restaurant like no other. Here, an appetizer of naan and hummus is called "Love Story" (referring to the love between bread and dip). Little touches like this make dinner at Masala an experience to cherish. The décor blends contemporary chic with a dash of traditional Indian imagery. There is a whole menu just for chutney choices (try the date, the cranberry, the banana, the mango or the mint). The lengthy lists of chicken and lamb entrees (curried, tandooried or otherwise) will make you salivate. A number of fresh seafood specialties and luscious vegetarian dishes round out the offerings, and don't forget that the bar area rivals anything in the area in terms of downtown attitude. Situated in a fun shopping district, this venue serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. The airy, pastel, open main room with fresh flower accents invites conversation and conviviality. The narrow second room fosters more intimacy and is perfect for couples seeking a bit of solitude. Popular entrees include everything from Classic Meatloaf to Filet Mignon. Complete your evening with a freshly baked dessert. The restaurant's classic signature dessert, Lemon Crepe, is brilliant. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This sparkling seafood buffet is perfect for those who are both hungry and health-conscious. The decor is slick and sanitary yet comfortable, with a modern charm. The offerings change daily, but the buffet stations can usually be relied on to produce dozens of kinds of sushi, shrimp in several different styles of preparation, snow crab claws, and even lobster. Add to this a seemingly endless variety of salads, everything from romaine to soybean and a naughty selection of desserts, and you begin to have an idea why this restaurant is popular. Perched high on a hill in the industrial outskirts of Escondido, Stone World Bistro is quite literally a desert oasis. The cavernous dining room is adorned with slabs of granite, beams of steel and a 30-foot bamboo tree. Across the way, airplane-hangar-like doors open onto the facility's centerpiece, a beautifully manicured patio and garden about the size of a city block. Pathways snake past lawns, fountains, a creek, and a fire pit. Pick a spot and down a pint or two of the award-winning homemade beer (including rarities like Oaked Arrogant Bastard).
