Worth the climb |
2225 Alpine Boulevard San Diego, CA 91901-2116 United States +1 619 445 5172 |
For a small mountain town, Alpine has more than its fair share of restaurants worth the 25-minute drive from downtown San Diego. This establishment was the first to become a destination in its own right. Dark woods, a low ceiling and candlelit tables contribute to a quiet, intimate atmosphere. American food rules here and that means beef and lots of it, combined with a few fish dishes and a single sandwich, the Texas Cheeseburger served with Steak Fries. Full bar service is offered. Old-fashioned food and fun |
2215 Main Street San Diego, CA 92036 United States +1 760 765 3757 |
This spot is a landmark in Julian, offering great food and lively entertainment on weekend nights. Special events are occasionally scheduled back in the 'barn', where music prevails over food. Meat lovers adore this restaurant, whereas the diet-conscious or vegetarian will be better off elsewhere. Pork ribs are served as both appetizers and entrees, along with 'Borgs' (Polish or Louisiana hot sausages). Wash it all down with your choice of beer, wine, cocktails or local non-alcoholic Julian cider, served hot or cold by the mug or pitcher. Review © 2007, Wcities |

3928 Twiggs San Diego, CA 92110-2843 United States +1 619 295 2343 |
This charming, intimate restaurant is often overlooked by the tourist hordes, but locals know to look for the candlelit porch with a half-dozen intimate tables. The interior is small and simple, decorated lightly in colonial Spanish style, with tiny tables. Yet, most guests prefer to eat outside for the most romantic experience. The menu offers South American cuisine. Enjoy thin-sliced Argentinean style beef or spicy, flavorful meat stews. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Looking for a place to relax in the evening with a micro-brew and juicy steak? This neighborhood bar and grill is your ideal spot. Current music hits play overhead, while sporting events air on the television screens. Restaurant owners describe their food as 'Contemporary American', with Buffalo Wings or Seared Albacore serving as appetizers to start off your night. Consider Spicy Rubbed St. Louis Ribs for your entree. California Cajun Chicken is another favorite. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Be a basket case |
1347 Tavern Road Suite 23 San Diego, CA 91901 United States +1 619 445 0706 http://www.alpinebreadbasket.com/ |
This locally-loved restaurant is well worth the quick, scenic trip to the little city of Alpine. Massive boulders, tall pines and a running stream surround the outside patio, warmed by heat lamps on chilly evenings. Okay, so, these features have been added to the middle of a little shopping mall, but you will not mind. Breakfasts are big, featuring items like Country-Fried Steak and Eggs. Lunches offer the signature "Bread Basket," filled with chili or other delicious items. Dinners provide one of the last and best Fried Chicken meals in the county. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A true winner all around |
2401 Camino Del Rio South San Diego, CA 92108 United States +1 619 291 2665 http://www.bullyssandiego.com/ |
The exterior is not anything special, with a partly enclosed patio on one side of a vaguely English-looking part-timbered building. However, the jammed parking lot is an indication of this spot's popularity. Try a Bully Burger, served with a fresh salad and choice of potato; the good deals extend into heartier fare, including prime rib, steaks, seafood and pasta. Expect a wait most nights. Dinner is served until midnight, every night. There is a good wine list, plus a range of beers. The full bar offers premium pours. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Inexpensive oasis |
5755 La Jolla Boulevard San Diego, CA 92037 United States +1 858 459 2768 |
This place is an old La Jolla landmark, frequented more by wealthy locals who know a good value when they find one than by tourists. Cozy, dark and warm, this branch welcomes the tired shopper, cost-savvy diner, and late-night snack crowd in La Jolla. Renowned for good beef, this restaurant easily turns out fish dishes as well, plus provides the ever-popular Bully Burger for those on a budget who desire a good meal. The Prime Rib for two provides an excellent meal. The full bar offers wines by the glass. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The inviting warmth of the Southwest is attractively expressed in this spacious venue overseen by Executive Chef Hanis Cavin. There is a wide variety of thoughtfully prepared entrees. A sure-fire winner is the Dakota Chicken, a rotisserie-roasted half-chicken glazed with an orange-chipotle sauce. There is an extensive wine list as well. If you plan to visit Club Rox after dinner, be sure to ask your server for a pass that saves you from paying the club's cover charge Review © 2007, Wcities |

Perched high on a hill in the industrial outskirts of Escondido, Stone World Bistro is quite literally a desert oasis. The cavernous dining room is adorned with slabs of granite, beams of steel and a 30-foot bamboo tree. The bar sits in one corner, in the shadow of the brewery's series of two-story brew kettles (which you can see up close and personal on the free daily brewery tour). Across the way, airplane-hangar-like doors open onto the facility's centerpiece, a beautifully manicured patio and garden about the size of a city block. Pathways snake past lawns, fountains, a creek, and a fire pit. Pick a spot and down a pint or two of the award-winning homemade beer (including rarities like Oaked Arrogant Bastard). The food menu is a cut above your average pub grub, focusing on locally raised seasonal ingredients and exotic preparations.
