Purists may sniff that Italy does not have "tapas!" But the rest of us will enjoy this low-on-décor, low-priced food and wine hotspot in North Park. Very drinkable imported Italian wines start at $3 a glass, and specials may drive that price down still more. But the real joy is the fresh, flavorful food – ranging from a single meatball for a buck to a lamb shank braised in red wine for $7. Paired with a $4 pasta side dish, it's a meal you could pay more for elsewhere, but enjoy less. Add in warm, efficient service and you'll definitely develop an appetite here. -Kathleen Wilder

Theme restaurants spend millions trying to re-create what this unashamed coffee shop really is: a holdover from the 1950s, relatively unscathed by remodeling. This restaurant's charm is in its simplicity. It is plain, fun and comfortable, with "genuine naughahyde" booths lining the windows, a counter in the rear and cooks on parade behind the pass-through window. Cheap and good, the breakfast special includes pancakes or a waffle, plus two eggs, bacon and sausage. Dinner specials vary, but can include dishes like the tasty Barbecue Boneless Chicken Breast.

Despite its North China name, this unashamedly Cantonese chop suey house still provides cheap family meals served on little silver-footed plates. Open since the 1930s, the interior is plainer than the ornate red-and-green chinoiserie outside would indicate. But this is Cantonese comfort food at its finest. This newly-renamed burger joint is in a classic one-story brick building in a reviving neighborhood just off of El Cajon Boulevard. Unprepossessing from the outside, inside it's a cozy European bistro space with a beer and wine bar offering California wines and quality draft beers. Owners Wolfgang and Lothar have created burgers beginning with the "Good Old Plain" or the "Cheeeeeeseeey Burger," but then the intensity shifts to the "Tonka Burger" made from lean ground buffalo meat and served with creamed horseradish, a Moroccan Lamb Burger, or the fresh chopped salmon "Chinnook Burger." Prices are low-moderate. -de Traci Regula

A Southern California success story, this restaurant has delivered delicious food in a fun atmosphere for the past 45 years. This Mission Valley location is convenient to the Mission San Diego de Alcala, Fashion Valley Shopping Center and Qualcomm Stadium. Whatever you order, if the table next to you has Fajitas and you do not, you will be jealous. This flavorful, fragrant, sizzling grilled steak or chicken is very hard to resist. The full bar entices patrons with an array of premium tequilas.

Twiggs Tea and Coffee

Caffeine and entertainment
4590 Park Boulevard
San Diego, CA 92116
United States

This place has everything. Nearly every night, live music is featured with up and coming folk singers and bluegrass musicians plying their trade. On the rare evenings when there is no music, look for poetry readings, writing seminars or even swing dance lessons. On the menu, tea and coffee in all varieties are available. The menu also offers beautiful tarts, cakes, pastries and cookies, as well as grilled panini sandwiches and salads.
