2913 State Street San Diego, CA 92008 United States +1 760 434 7616 |
Downtown Carlsbad hosts this mini-cafe, which offers an odd combination of ice cream treats and health-conscious entrees. Ice cream delights include sundaes, made with Dreyers ice cream, and fountain specialties. Try an Oreo Milkshake or a Root Beer Float. On the healthy side, this spot has a short list of salads and sandwiches. Consider the Veggie Burrito (organic beans and rice, cheese, avocado and salsa, served in a warm tortilla). Most guests eat outside, where patio tables are placed near a stone fountain, with a ceiling fan overhead. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Airy and bright, this strip-mall restaurant manages to exude charm and a taste of the Greek islands. The restaurant offers a rich array of traditional dishes, plus some new creations. The Seafood Bisque ranks with the best. Salmon Dolmas (grape leaves stuffed with salmon) are a delightful variation on the old rice-and-tomato theme. Greek and Californian wines are available. An artful re-creation of Cycladic architecture greets visitors. On the walls are well-rendered views of Santorini by various artists. Outside, a handful of sidewalk tables encourage people watching. Rare delicacies rule the day, including dishes made with deer and wild boar, plus an abundance of seafoods. This restaurant's owners serve what they call, "royal Indian cuisine". Each specialty is carefully crafted, as if being prepared for Middle Eastern royalty. Consider Chicken Curry or Lamb Bhuna (lamb sauteed in spices and onions). Palak Paneer (homemade cottage cheese and spinach) is a popular vegetarian entree. The royal cuisine is served in an elaborate setting. A stone fountain accompanies the outdoor dining area. Inside, pink and burgundy decorations brighten the room, while ornate pictures cover the walls. The kitchen is open, in full view from the restaurant's entrance. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Enlightened Vegetarian Cuisine |
3351, Adams Avenue San Diego, CA 92116 United States +1 619 282 4116 http://www.jyotibihanga.com/ |
This small corner restaurant in the heart of Normal Heights is anything but normal – it's extraordinary. A mainstay for locals for years, under its airy high blue-painted ceiling it offers delicious vegetarian and vegan cuisine prepared and served by followers of Sri Chinmoy, a prolific spiritual poet and teacher who runs marathons in his spare time. The chili, when available, is fantastic and is a great choice for any non-vegetarian in the group – they won't miss the meat. A Saturday buffet is offered several times a month – call for this month's schedule. -de Traci Regula Review © 2007, Wcities |

When this spot first opened, it was a small juice bar on the beach. It is still on the beach, but Ki has expanded her menu considerably. Her goal is to provide low-fat, great-tasting healthy food and drinks at an affordable price. Many of the ingredients are organic. Choose breakfast items such as the Tofu Scramble or Hot Organic Oats. Lunch and dinner offer a gourmet array of entrees like Salmon Salad, Squash Enchiladas or Eggplant Chicken Gorgonzola. A brilliant kitchen creates fine Chinese cuisine made to order, or choose from the well-stocked, fresh buffet. The food here is excellent and well priced. For sheer value, the dinner buffet offers a wonderful array of items. These vary seasonally, but a recent visit offered Green-Lipped Mussels in black bean sauce, and Fried Won Tons in two varieties, one made with a dash of cream cheese and meat, the other a delicious, moist meatball. The buffet offers several soups, including an excellent Hot-and-Sour. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Masala is an Indian restaurant like no other. Here, an appetizer of naan and hummus is called "Love Story" (referring to the love between bread and dip). Little touches like this make dinner at Masala an experience to cherish. The décor blends contemporary chic with a dash of traditional Indian imagery. There is a whole menu just for chutney choices (try the date, the cranberry, the banana, the mango or the mint). The lengthy lists of chicken and lamb entrees (curried, tandooried or otherwise) will make you salivate. A number of fresh seafood specialties and luscious vegetarian dishes round out the offerings, and don't forget that the bar area rivals anything in the area in terms of downtown attitude. This Japanese restaurant, located just one block from the coast, is quite informal, best suited for casual family occasions, take-out or dining alone. The restaurant's decor is a flashback to the American 70s era. Wood paneling covers the walls, while booths feature gold upholstery. Chicken Teriyaki is a popular dish, served with rice, soup and salad. For a bit larger entree, try the Salmon Teriyaki Combination, including rice, salad, soup and six California Rolls. Sushi rolls are also sold on an individual basis and vegetarian dishes are available. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Step inside this authentic Indian venue and you will swear you are in Delhi or Mumbai. The atmosphere is low-key and the cuisine is refreshingly authentic. Tan and brown colors greet you in the dining room, from the walls to the conservative pictures. White tablecloths are the exception to this color scheme, accompanied by a white vase of flowers on every table. On the menu, Tandoori specialties are popular, including the Chicken Garlic Kabab and Tandoori Shrimp. Three-Level Nightclub Deluxe |
454 6th Avenue San Diego, CA 92101 United States +1 619 544 9500 http://www.stingsandiego.com/ |
Stingaree is a Goliath of a night spot. The ground floor is a proper restaurant/nightclub, replete with a full dinner menu and a full dance floor. The bar is famous for its extensive wine list and specialty cocktails (including the "Berry Manilow"). The food menu is awash in French, Italian and Mediterranean influences, all served with a dash of Californian flair, and always full of the freshest local and seasonal ingredients. Choose from small plates like the seafood "Menage a Trois," or no-nonsense entrees like Lobster Linguine. Up one flight of stairs is the Mezzanine, a more intimate lounge-style area where revelers can sip drinks and survey the action down below. Keep heading skyward and you'll find yourself on the Rooftop Oasis with a fire pit by your side and a cool breeze in your hair. 1999 Citracado Parkway (between Andreasan Drive & Vineyard Avenue) San Diego, CA 92029 United States +1 760 471 4999 http://www.stoneworldbistro.com/ |
Perched high on a hill in the industrial outskirts of Escondido, Stone World Bistro is quite literally a desert oasis. The cavernous dining room is adorned with slabs of granite, beams of steel and a 30-foot bamboo tree. The bar sits in one corner, in the shadow of the brewery's series of two-story brew kettles (which you can see up close and personal on the free daily brewery tour). Across the way, airplane-hangar-like doors open onto the facility's centerpiece, a beautifully manicured patio and garden about the size of a city block. Pathways snake past lawns, fountains, a creek, and a fire pit. Pick a spot and down a pint or two of the award-winning homemade beer (including rarities like Oaked Arrogant Bastard). The food menu is a cut above your average pub grub, focusing on locally raised seasonal ingredients and exotic preparations. The on-site gift shop features everything from Arrogant Bastard hoodies to freshly jugged beer to go. See website for full menu, beer info, event calendar, online shopping, tour schedule and more.
