In the 20th century, La Jolla has established a worldwide reputation for top-notch scientific research facilities. The Scripps Medical Research Center was established in 1924 in downtown La Jolla, later moving to the present location in 1964. Closely connected with the University of California at San Diego (UCSD), this center conducts cutting edge medical research in numerous areas including women's health.
