Breads, Pastry, Pizzas & More |
1331 9th Avenue (between Irving Street & Judah Street) San Francisco, CA 94122 United States +1 415 566 3117 http://www.arizmendibakery.org/ |
This Inner Sunset neighborhood co-op, affiliated with Berkeley's Cheese Board, just may ruin you for any other bakery. They bake a wide range of breads, with a whole list of specials every day (grab a loaf of the Irish Soda Bread on Tuesdays). They turn out specialty scones and muffins all baked with tender loving care. Their cookies are at once familiar and surprisingly new (try Auntie Mabel's Cookie Brittle or the moist and crumbly Apricot-Almond). Kids love the crispy/cheesy bread sticks. If it's more than just a snack you're looking for, join the throngs filing in from the far reaches of the city for a slice or four of Arizmendi's famous pizza. They top each one with the freshest of locally raised veggies and the creamiest of specialty cheeses. Eat yours at one of two tables inside, on the benches out front, or in Golden Gate Park just a block away. See website for complete list of weekly bread, scone, muffin and cookie specials, as well as a mission statement and a comprehensive pizza calendar. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Over a Thousand Acres |
Stanyan & Haight Streets San Francisco, CA 94118 United States +1 415 831 2700 http://www.sfgov.org/ |
In the late 1800s, a Scotsman named John McLaren transformed more than 1,000 acres of sand dunes into a wondrous haven in the midst of busy city life. Stretching from Stanyan Street to the Pacific Ocean, the lush landscaping features ever-changing settings at every turn. There are trails for walking, jogging, biking, horseback riding, as well as a golf course, lawn bowling greens, soccer fields and a baseball diamond. For those seeking less strenuous diversion, check out the California Academy of Sciences and an authentic Japanese Tea Garden. For families with children, there are playgrounds, a live buffalo reserve and a carousel. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Mission District's Namesake |
332 16th Street (at Dolores Street) San Francisco, CA 94114 United States +1 415 621 8203 http://www.missiondolores.org/ |
The northernmost of the California missions founded by Father Junipero Serra, this mission is the oldest structure in San Francisco, dating from 1788. Walk inside and it is like Spanish Colonial San Francisco beneath roof beams held together with rawhide strips. The graveyard includes the remains of both noble colonial families and the Native Americans who were conscripted to build and then serve the Mission. The museum houses artifacts and manuscripts. See website for complete visitor details. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The fight against AIDS |
856 Stanyan St San Francisco, CA 94117 United States +1 415 750 8340 http://www.aidsmemorial.org/ |
This seven-acre sanctuary is a tribute to the memory of those lost to this so-far incurable disease. Located on the east end of Golden Gate Park , the grove was conceived in 1989 by a group of San Francisco residents and received national status by President Clinton and Congress in October 1996. Renovation for the Memorial began in 1991 and it is a beautiful landscape with thousands of new trees, plants, six flagstone gathering areas, 15 benches, and numerous granite boulders. Today it is the site of memorial services, reflection, and events such as World AIDS Day. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Tribute to SF's finest families |
1 Loraine Court San Francisco, CA 94118 United States +1 415 752 7891 http://www.sanfranciscocemeter... |
This ornate four-story building looks more like a modern day urban castle than a burial vault. Some of San Francisco finest families, or rather their ashes, are housed inside, including the Turks and the Eddys. In addition, The Columbarium features a collection of unusual urns and caskets, including the infamous cookie jar urn. The marble-lined space with lovely stained glass windows also has remarkable accoustics, making the concerts performed here on a regular basis a real treat. Admission is free. Architectural Gem & Music Center |
2 Lake Street (at the corner of Lake and Arguello Street) San Francisco, CA 94109 United States +1 415 751 2535 http://www.emanuelsf.org |
This Reform congregation dates back to 1850 and is the oldest in the West. Its current home, constructed in 1925 (5685 Jewish Calendar), is based on Haggia Sophia in Istanbul, a popular template for Jewish temples built at the turn of the last century. In 1927, the American Institute of Architects described it as the finest piece of architecture in Northern California. Today, with its 150-foot dome, the temple, remains an eye-catching fixture of the San Francisco skyline. The sanctuary's exquisite semi-abstract stained glass windows, one representing fire, the other water, cast wonderful, glowing shadows on the impressive ark that towers at the far end of the chamber. The temple is also home to the Music at Meyer series, which presents lectures and concerts throughout the year. Be sure to visit the website for schedules and updates. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Cultural Destination |
50 Hagiwara Tea Garden Drive San Francisco, CA 94118 United States +1 415 750 3540 http://www.thinker.org/deyoung... |
Acting as a major cultural destination since 1895, the de Young Museum re-opened in October 2005, newly housed in a facility designed by Swiss architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron and Fong & Chan Architects in San Francisco. The Building is magnificent and from the observation tower you can get a great view of the park. It is open, airy and massive. It als o has a perforated and embossed copper façade which goes very well with the greenery around the museum. The museum has world-renowned collections of American Painting and Sculpture dating from the 17th to the 20th century. Also is Primitive Art highly represented with extraordinary pieces from Native American Art (from the ancient Teotihuacan City), African Art (statues and potteries) and Oceanic Art (shields, dance dress and masks).
