Bender's is a Mission District legend. Firebombed into oblivion in 2006, its valiant founders rallied the troops, and with a cavalcade of community support, reopened just a year and half later -- bigger and better than ever. Noteworthy improvements include some terrifically sleazy signage rescued from Valencia Street's now-defunct Leather Tongue Video, as well as a bar surface fashioned out of a lane from the bowling alley now inhabited by Amoeba, and of course some choice burnt-to-a-crisp fire wreckage kept around as trophies of the place's victory over tragedy. Comfy booths surround the pool table and the grill, which is operated by the folks at Weird Fish. The beer selection is great, the booze selection is fab, and as the straight-shootin' staff'll tell ya, wine is "red" or "white". Review © 2009, Wcities |
