Looking for signs of life in that gray, post-holiday period of mid-January? Look no further than the 13th annual Berlin & Beyond Film Festival, whose well-planned schedule of events will keep you busy for a full eight days. The festival, whose main venue is the venerable Castro Theatre, features films from Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Each year, the festival organizers make sure to screen several short films, as well as an old silent film (this year it's the classic "Der Sonderling"), but the majority of films screened are feature-length new releases, most of which won't make it to American screens other than at small events such as this one. This year's festival will be kicked off by Turkish-German director Fatih Akin's "Auf der Anderen Seite (The Edge of Heaven)," a contorted, cross-generational tale of seeking that flits back and forth from Germany to Turkey. While that film deals with some heavy themes, this year's festival is noticeably more lighthearted than those of past years. One notable event of this year's festival is the special posthumous tribute to German actor Ulrich Mühe, who recently died an untimely death in the wake of high praise for his work in "Das Leben der Anderen (The Lives of Others)." Mühe's daughter Anna Maria will be on hand, and the festival will showcase three of Mühe's films, including the aforementioned "Das Leben der Anderen," along with "Half of Life" and "Funny Games." N.B. Certain events will take place at Point Arena Theatre in Mendocino County and at the Goethe-Institut in San Francisco; see website for details and schedule. –Meenakshi Preisser
