Brainpeople, written by Academy Award-nominated screenwriter José Rivera (Motorcycle Diaries) and presented by The American Conservatory Theater at Zeum Theater, bravely explores fear, love, alienation, social ruin, a future plagued by paranoia, and various shades of madness — all in a single act. The scene is set with Mayannah, the wealthy heiress played by Lucia Brawley, hosting an annual dinner party where two complete strangers are invited into her elegant home. One guest is Ani, a broken-hearted loner played by Sona Tatoyan, and the other is Rosemary, a victim of sever multiple personality disorder played skillfully by René Augesen. It is clear from the moment when the main course is revealed to be Bengal Tiger meat that the party will exist in its own sphere of reality. The characters are slaves to their own unique fantasies, quivering minds struggling to exist in a world where love is rejected for incomprehensible reasons. Under the direction of OBIE Award-winner Chay Yew, the three women give performances that delicately ricochet off one another in breathless monologues of revelation, subtle admissions concerning the past and forceful exchanges of power. As sirens forever blare in the background in a futuristic Los Angeles where citizens are controlled through the government's perpetration of fear, the mood of the play teeters on the edge of panic, mirroring the shaky mental balance of each character. Brainpeople transcends good or bad; it gives the audience an experience of insanity and all of its modern complexities. Tickets: $15.50-$20.50 Performances: Through February 16. -Travis Schirmer
