What you should know about the Russian pastry is that it is sturdy. The cookies are heavy with butter, sugar, and strong flavor. Traditional sweet pastries such as turnovers, pies, and coffee cakes are dense with apricot, apple, or cream cheese. The pastry around the generously sized piroshkis has the right chewiness and is filled with either ground beef or cabbage and mushrooms. These are hearty enough to get you through a mid-winter afternoon in Minsk without feeling the chill. The friendly counter help have the most wonderful Russian accents. Only cash is accepted.
