Downtown San Francisco encompasses much of the variety this diverse city has to offer. All roads here seem to lead to Union Square, as do all the cable and street cars; you should head there too if shopping is your aim. Fisherman's Wharf and the Embarcadero offer views of the bay that surrounds the peninsula, as well as family-friendly entertainment. In the evening, the restaurants of Chinatown and North Beach let diners pretend they've traveled to another continent, while the Civic Center hosts countless musical and theatrical performances.
