On the night of the winter solstice (December 22), everyone from a toddler in a tutu to decades-old friends stepped out of the cold and took off their shoes before climbing the stairs to an intimate performance venue, an open space surrounded by chairs, couches, and cushions. Upon entering the spacious single room, the smell of hot apple cider and the performers themselves welcomed the audience. Eth-Noh-Tec is the charismatic Asian-American Storytelling Duo of Robert Kikuchi-Yngojo and Nancy Wang. They create and perform interdisciplinary theater which incorporates elements of poetry, choreography, rhythm, and humor to relate fables and folktales from around the world. 25 Lights the Night carried the audience through twenty-five stories traditionally told during the longest night of the year, many requiring audience participation. Some stories, like the tale of a creator god teaching his people the foolishness of war, are incredibly pertinent to today's world; others lead humorously to a clever proverb or relate back to an oral refrain. As the evening drew to a close, and to a dessert course for everyone to share, four stories expanded on a rhythmic haiku accompanied by motions: Ever since my house burned down, nothing stands to view but the rising moon A once a month storytelling Salon You're ON! is held in the Eth-Noh-Tec Studio in the Mission District of San Francisco, and the duo travels to museums, schools, libraries, and other venues around the world to tell stories and conduct workshops. -Rebecca Glaser Review © 2009, Wcities |
