Winner of the 2004 Tony Award for Best Play and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Doug Wright's I am my Own Wife takes a look at repression and freedom through the true story of the life of a German transvestite. The story centers around the elderly Charlotte von Mahlsdorf as she recounts memories of her life to a young American playwright, the author himself. Prompted by objects in her the Grunderzeit Museum displaying her personal collection of furniture, clocks, phonographs, and the location of a former gay bar, von Mahlsdorf slowly reveals her fascinating and varied life. All parts are played by Andrew Nance whose repertoire of over 40 different personas is a remarkable feat of characterization. Wearing only a black dress, pearls, and a kerchief, he morphs instantly from a scared young girl to an imprisoned old man, at points even taking on the task of a multi-person conversation. One of his best characters is his over the top but hilariously funny portrayal of an enthusiastic, modern day, German talk show host. Having survived an abusive father, the Nazi regime, and East German communism while running an illegal gay bar all without ever betraying her true self, von Mahlsdorf's memories are vivid and enthralling. Some painful, some amusing, all reminiscences are a poignant reminder of the effects of oppression and the sacrifices made during these troubled times in Germany. As controversy surrounds some of von Mahlsdorf's actions and her past is questioned, the audience is left to form its own decision about the prices paid for freedom. Located in the New Conservatory Theatre Center's (NCTC) Walker Theatre, the black box-like stage sets the ambiance perfectly for the portrayal of life under the bleak Nazi and Communist regimes. Directed by Ed Decker, I am my Own Wife is a heart-wrenching and uplifting story of a transvestite who remains true to herself despite great adversity.
