What RENT was to New York in the 1980s, Insignificant Others is to San Francisco today. It does have a lighter feel than its East Coast counterpart, yet Insignificant Others, directed by George Quick, successfully portrays the story of love, friendship, and loss through a romantic musical comedy. The story centers around five friends recently relocated to San Francisco from the Midwest. Holding the group together is Margaret, played with energy and spunk by Sarah Kathleen Farrell. Her bemused portrayal of a young woman trying to find dateable men is hilariously expressed through such musical numbers as Heterosexual where she rejoices at finding a straight man in San Francisco and Plumbing where she discovers her new man is not quite who she thought he was. Her roommate Luke (Alex Rodriguez) meanwhile pines after his dorky best friend Jordan (Jason Hoover) who has fallen in love with a coworker of ambiguous sexual orientation. In one of the best songs of the musical, Gay or Straight, Margaret and Jordan try to decipher the sexual preferences of a man who owns both action movies and Yentl and perfectly express the feelings of those dating in San Francisco – "If you're queer/make it clear!" Meanwhile the other two girls, Jeannine (Omi Fernandez) and Kristen (Jennifer Graham), who have distinctly different personalities, unwittingly begin dating the same boy. The five friends' entire first year in San Francisco tests both the limits of and shows the importance of friendship. The show is at its best when witty and satirical as showcased by the song Starbucks when Farrell transforms into a coffee Nazi and reveals Starbucks' plan to control the world. The second half loses much of its edge and falls prey to sentimentality. Yet the show, with the help of standout performer Farrell, depicts a zest for life that is irresistible and its infectious fun will make every young Midwesterner want to move to "The City by the Bay." Written, composed, and produced by L. Jay Kuo and still in need of a bit more polishing before it is ready for Broadway, this performance proves Kuo is a talent to watch. Winner of Best Original Musical Script by the Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle in 2007 and in its second run in San Francisco, performances take place at the theater at Pier 39. The show may not be suitable for those under age 13. Tickets: $39-$46 - Lael K. Goodman Review © 2009, Wcities |
