Flamenco is a traditional Spanish dance involving clapping hands and stamping feet, and it is performed with flair and style in Jardín De Mis Sueños at the ODC Theater at 3153 17th Street. Jardín De Mis Sueños translates to "Garden of my Dreams" and although the reason behind the title remains a mystery, the performance speaks for itself. The combination of dance and live music creates a romantic and engaging night. Yaelisa, an Emmy-winning choreographer, performs and choreographs several segments, but each dancer is talented and Andres Peña is especially moving. The seating arrangement creates an intimate setting; tables are placed right in front of the performance and the less costly seats are on the risers and still remarkable close to the dancers. However, you may want to spend the extra money to purchase a table in the first row, since the audience sitting in the front can block the view of the dancers' feet for those sitting farther back. The performance combines intricate footwork and hand gestures with the sound of the guitar and singing. However, the most moving piece of the night is performed by Yaelisa without musical accompaniment. Yaelisa dances without making any sound at the beginning of the piece, but as the dance progresses she creates her own musical percussion by clapping her hands and stomping. In fact, the percussion of clapping and loud footwork creates a rhythm throughout every song, making the dancer a part of the band. This is best shown with one of Andres Peña's dances, where the singers perform and wait for Peña to respond in dance. Feel free to clap or shout encouragement to add to the energy, though trying to keep the same rhythmic clapping as the dancers may be impossible since besides a fast pace, they change the rhythm often. On the December 15th matinée, the audience is encouraged to bring the whole family and children under the age of 12 are admitted for free. Refreshments such as wine and cheese are available for purchase in the lobby and can be eaten during the performance. If you love to watch flamenco, or just enjoy watching intricate dance, the Jardín De Mis Sueños is a performance you cannot miss. There is an additional show at Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts on December 21st at 8p, call +1 650 903 6000 for more details. -Laura Davy
