A debate rages over the origin of the fortune cookie. Some believe it was invented in Los Angeles, others believe it was in San Francisco. No one believes it came from China. This place has a partisan attitude towards the whole thing. The Hakone Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park where, some hold, the cookies made their debut, serves its Shangri-La brand. It also sells retail from its Chinatown store, where you can see how fortune cookies are made. The process has not changed much since the early part of the century. Free tours, call for reservations.
