The concept behind "Meeting Resistance," a documentary screening at the Roxie Cinema in San Francisco starting January 4, 2008, is simple: investigate and report back on the perspectives of Iraqi insurgents. First-time directors Molly Bingham and Steve Connors, both experienced photojournalists, take to the Adhamiya neighborhood of Baghdad to interview active fighters against United States Coalition forces. The ten interviewees are as diverse in their backgrounds as they are in their beliefs; a teacher speaks openly about how his involvement in the insurgency grew from disgust towards Iraqis who did not stand up and fight during the 2003 invasion, while a Shi'a housewife discusses her will to do anything in order to protect Iraq for the sake of her children's future. Despite the sympathetic bias of the filmmakers towards the insurgents, the beliefs of fundamental Muslims and their perceptions of the United States are successfully investigated throughout the documentary. Practically every shot of the film is composed with an eye for detail and stunningly intimate cinematography as pointed questions are asked about funding, guerrilla strategies, and the methods of acquiring weapons. Bingham and Connors go straight to the source of the opposition, bypassing official statements from the White House and media sources, which in turn creates a fuller perspective on the war in general. When expressing their ordinary desire for freedom and independence, the fighters simultaneously humanize themselves for the audience and deconstruct Western rhetoric concerning the idea of "the enemy." -Travis Schirmer
