Nan Kempner (1930-2005) a noted a fashion icon and couture connoisseur, acquired one of the richest couture collections including ensembles by the legendary Yves Saint Laurent, Karl Lagerfeld for the House of Channel, and contemporary couturiers like Tom Ford for Gucci and Jean Paul Gaultier. While Nan, a member of the The Best Dressed List hall of fame, is being celebrated in Nan Kampner: American Chic her presence takes a backseat to the couture garments. The exhibit displays the artistry of couture; couture refers to exclusive custom-fitted fashion and Haute Couture being produced only by appointed firms. It displays many of the cutting-edge fashions of the 1960s, which shaped contemporary fashion. For example, the Yves Saint Laurent Le Smoking tuxedo suit, introduced in 1966. With the Le Smoking tuxedo suit, Yves Saint Laurent redefined women's fashion -he took a traditional men's tuxedo, re-tailored the look to create a chic evening wear alternative for women. The Le Smoking tuxedo suit gave birth to the modern, and now socially accepted, pantsuit. The true beauty of the exhibit lies in the ability of the couture garments to tell the story of a precise age and era; many in this case are daring fashion tales of the rebellious 1960s. The exhibit is a rare chance to see the artistry of legends like Yves Saint Laurent and the see makings of legends like Tom Ford. -Marissa Mejia Review © 2009, Wcities |
