The Old First Presbyterian Church presents its annual Old First Concert Series showcasing music of different molds: from classical and contemporary to jazz and folk. The most talented names in the Bay Area, both well-known and up-and-coming, take the stage every weekend, offering something that will appeal to even the most inexperienced concert-goer. The whimsical chamber ensemble ADESSO kicks off the first performance of the 39th season with a fun, eclectic program. The show begins slowly with pieces such as "Loop" and "The Rose." The atmosphere gets punched up with the jazz-inspired "Sleeping with the Dictionary" and set to new heights with the heavily-percussive, chant-and-stomp-heavy "Mela Prati Bop." "Power Chords," is nimble and airy, despite its title. The most unexpected performance is also the best: a xylophone soloist performing "Valse Brilliante and Xylophonia." Its ragtime-inspired rhythms are less complicated than the other arrangements, and the skill of the soloist is admirable. "3rd Construction for Percussion" brings the show to a close with a bang; big drums, maracas and instruments as diverse as a conch shell fill the church with beautiful, well-organized noise. For a list of all their upcoming concerts, see their website. Tickets: $15 General, $12 Seniors and Students. -Gina Rosemellia Review © 2009, Wcities |
