Axum

Ethiopian Delights
698 Haight Street
(at Pierce Street)
San Francisco, CA 94117
United States
+1 415 252 7912
http://www.axumcafe.com/
There are two things you should know about this Lower Haight fave: The food is spicy and the honey wine is strong. The menu is limited, but it has something for both veggie and meat lovers. The best bet is to order a combination platter. It comes on top of some injera, an enormous squishy pancake used to mop up sauce. It will be smothered with helpings of stewed meats, vegetables or both. Gathered around this luscious feast with friends and loved ones, you (and your stomach) will be happy as can be.

Baobab Grill

Senegalese squeeze
3386 19th Street
(at the corner of Mission Street)
San Francisco, CA 94110
United States
+1 415 643 3558
This cozy, tropical enclave stands out not just because of its authentic Senegalese menu, but also because of its delicious juices and cocktails made from freshly squeezed exotic fruits. Weekly live music, spoken word, and African dance have generated a rather bohemian set of regulars, some of whom can be caught scribbling manuscripts while sitting at the bar. Indeed, the relaxed yet stimulating feel encourages a certain thoughtfulness. Dinner is served until 10:30p. Only cash is accepted.

Cafe Ethiopia

Spicy and great
878 Valencia Street
San Francisco, CA 94110-1739
United States
+1 415 285 2728
For a spicier take on Ethiopian cuisine, head over to this small but tidy storefront. The least spicy thing on the menu is the Kito, an African version of Steak Tartare that has still got a fair amount of bite to it. There is an excellent selection of vegetarian dishes made of lentils, eggplant, and so forth that are hearty and satisfying, but have plenty of cold water handy or, better, some refreshing honey wine. The clientele is the usual mix of Mission District types, some students, some professionals and some hippies left over from the Summer of Love. The low-key staff keeps them all happy with great service and plenty of smiles.

As a side dish, try the Teff, a baked and delicately seasoned, slightly nut-flavored grain that is an Ethiopian specialty. Nyala

Spicy and hearty
39 Grove Street
At the corner of Larkin Street
San Francisco, CA 94102
United States
+1 415 861 0788
The 60s chic motif makes the decor here a sleek blast from the past. It is a welcoming place for locals and tourists in a neighborhood of sometimes grubby storefronts. The food is delicious, spiced just right and served by a friendly wait staff who can explain everything from the Teff-based Pancake (torn and held between the fingers to pick up items on your plate), to the fabulous Italian desserts displayed prominently by the front door. The buffet is strictly vegetarian and has a good selection of dishes including a very spicy Lentil Stew. Tasty meat dishes can be ordered a la carte along with Ethiopian beer and mead.

In this eclectic dinner club, you will hear everything from Dixieland to Afro-Cuban jazz. Mondays are open mic night, a chance for talented unknowns to debut before an appreciative audience. The food is easy to appreciate too. Try the simmered chicken Doro Wat or the vegetarian Gomen, a buttery mixture of greens, onions, and peppers. The wide array of Ethiopian dishes is as colorful and unique as the restaurant and its clientele.
