A better latitude |
235 16th St San Francisco, CA 94107 United States +1 415 777 5558 |
This place is almost like a big garage, with floor-to-ceiling glass panels that open horizontally to an outdoor courtyard. There are plenty of tables for dining alfresco. The excellent food here is inspired by the 42 degree latitude on which the Mediterranean rests and includes fresh fish, bowls of marinated olives of many varieties, artisan cheese plates, and lots of fresh, crusty bread are served. The wine list is equal to the cuisine, both representing the many countries of this latitude and some evenings, live jazz is performed to complete your cultural immersion. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The view from this venerable eatery is one of the best in the Bay Area. The food is American with a French accent. Succulent Roast Chicken is always on the menu as is a Filet Mignon cooked to order and some lovely pasta dishes. The menu, like many in the area, changes with the seasons, but the quality is constant. The dining area has high ceilings and huge windows that take advantage of the vista that includes The City and the Bay. The wait staff is personable and efficient. The wine list is good with California vintages being the order of the day along with some select imports from France. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Crispy crust |
2033 Union Street San Francisco, CA 94123 United States +1 415 885 4500 |
For traditional, East Coast-style pizza, check out this pizzeria that cooks its pizza in a wood-burning brick oven so the crust comes out crisp, dark, and delicious. Enjoy it inside the traditional pizzeria with its even more traditional red-and-white checked tablecloths, or outside in the outdoor patio area. Pizza pies are named after famous East Coast cities. The Philly, for example, is topped with turkey sausage, sauteed onions and roasted bell peppers. Other popular varieties include the Greek Isle (sun-dried tomatoes, artichoke hearts, feta and mozzarella cheese). Review © 2007, Wcities |

Then move on to Roasted Duck Breast, or Char-Grilled Quail with Black Rice and Mushrooms, or better still, the Seared Lobster with Lobster Roe-Butter Sauce and Black Rice Risotto - it comes highly recommended. Desserts include Flourless Coconut Rum Cake, home-made Sorbet, and ice cream. And all of this amongst potted plants, intricate carvings, pottery, and fountains - a truly Vietnamese experience! This Inner Sunset neighborhood co-op, affiliated with Berkeley's Cheese Board, just may ruin you for any other bakery. They bake a wide range of breads, with a whole list of specials every day (grab a loaf of the Irish Soda Bread on Tuesdays). They turn out specialty scones and muffins all baked with tender loving care. Their cookies are at once familiar and surprisingly new (try Auntie Mabel's Cookie Brittle or the moist and crumbly Apricot-Almond). Kids love the crispy/cheesy bread sticks. If it's more than just a snack you're looking for, join the throngs filing in from the far reaches of the city for a slice or four of Arizmendi's famous pizza. They top each one with the freshest of locally raised veggies and the creamiest of specialty cheeses. Eat yours at one of two tables inside, on the benches out front, or in Golden Gate Park just a block away. See website for complete list of weekly bread, scone, muffin and cookie specials, as well as a mission statement and a comprehensive pizza calendar. Review © 2007, Wcities |

French California |
384B Hayes Street San Francisco, CA 94102 United States +1 415 626 1211 |
This chrome and cream eatery does a south-of France take on typical cafe fare with flair. The Bacon-Cheese Sandwich is sparked with crispy pear slices and mustard, with just a hint of horse-radish. The salads favor fava beans and salty, pungent cornichons. If you want to eat on the premises, there is a counter where you stand while digging in. A better choice is the garden patio in the back that takes advantage of the micro-climate's sunny days. The counter is staffed by good-natured twenty-somethings who know their way around an espresso and their upwardly mobile clientele. Review © 2007, Wcities |

450 Sansome Street San Francisco, CA 94111 United States +1 415 982 3101 |
The specials at this bright chrome and glass place include the Aromachino (milk, espresso and vanilla flavoring over ice) and the Philly-aroma (hot pastrami with peppers and mozzarella). The names are cutesy, but the quality is seriously good. The counter staff is an efficient group of twentysomethings that make getting your meal lightning fast. That is why local Financial District types crowd this place all day, whether for a light lunch (there are salads and soups, too), or to take a break on the outdoor patio with a pastry and a cup of the expertly brewed coffee drink. Forget to bring something to read? Do not worry, the place has magazines for sale or to lend. Try the Atlas Salad with dried figs, kalamata olives, cucs, tomatoes, red onion, or the Grilled Cuban Beef. Last year Atlas won the the Bay Guardian's Best of the Bay's 'Best Tubular Sandwich.' This neighborhood bistro is small but welcoming, strictly serving affordable French cuisine. Located in the Presidio Heights district, it has been recognized as one of the city's Top 100 restaurants by the San Francisco Chronicle. This is no small feat considering the competition. The atmosphere is that of a typical bistro, simple, clean and comfortable. Outdoor seating is limited but available. Dinner entrees include Sonoma Rabbit in a light Dijon sauce served with pasta and fresh vegetables and a Ragout of Lamb served with Duchesse potatoes. The wine list is adequate with a nice selection of Californian and French champagne, white, red, and sparkling wines (prices vary). Deliberately unpretentious from the open kitchen dishing up typical grill favorites such chilly, sandwiches and garlic fries served in mountainous proportions, to the booth seating in lightly varnished woods or the patio, this is a popular spot for locals. Young and old marvel at the fleet of beer vats mounted on the wall while quaffing ales, largers, pilsners and other products of the microbrewery craze are still strong here. Situated in a converted adobe church, the food here is a divine experience in its own right. You might think that this place with its colorful flags, faux adobe paint job and bright red tables on the patio was moved lock, stock and barrel from Mexico itself. The food tastes authentic, too, but the great news here is that it's made without lard and the cooks use cooking techniques that keep the cholesterol down at every stop in the cooking process. This North Beach favorite offers little space, but a lot of great Italian food. The cozy little cafe is very small but possesses the charm of pasta on the ceiling. The Genoese chef brings authentic cuisine such as their pesto pasta and tortelloni with walnut sauce as well as meat and seafood dishes. Try out their Genoese foccacia with cheese as an appetizer. As they do not have their liquor license, there is no corkage fee, so bring your own bottle to accompany the meal. Valet parking is $8. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Opened by a team that believe movies and dinner are a natural combination, this courtyard restaurant cum bar keeps an internationally intellectual atmosphere by projecting the films of Fellini, Polanksi and company on its neighbors walls. Tableside speakers add a drive-in feel to the French bistro fare, letting the films function as either the background or a main attraction. Reservations are recommended as this is one of the leading contestants in the Mission hipness race. Review © 2007, Wcities |

That tantalizing aroma of sausages that greets you as you come through the door of this '50s diner isn't coming from just any links. These are the specialty of the house and made on site. There are spicy, sweet, and several other variations, each better than the last. They are found in the bountiful lasagna. You will also find Braised Lamb, Scampi and an excellent selection of pasta dishes, as well as great pizzas to enjoy in one of the cozy booths or on the brick-lined patio. The service is quick, which is good because this place can get very crowded with locals of all ages on weekends. Reservations are strongly recommended. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Hit this place for a midnight snack or a full dinner. It is a favorite with socialites and chefs because it serves until the wee hours. There is a good assortment of raw shellfish for starters, sample oysters or clams on the half shell. There are plenty of satisfying entrees - choose from Rotisserie Chicken, Grilled Fish, or a number of other simple yet tasty main courses. The service is terrific. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The waterfront adobe radiates a romantic ambiance with fireplaces, a simple decor and views of The City by the Bay. The menu is filled with Mexican dishes that have unexpected ingredients to challenge the palate. If you are looking for a generic chicken burrito, this restaurant is not for you. Start out with unique appetizers like Grilled Prickly Pear Cactus and Marinated Shrimp and Petrale Sole. The Chili Rellenos are stuffed with chicken and raisins, then served with walnut sauce and pomegranate seeds. The tamales are a popular choice but you might try the Roasted Duck with Pumpkin Seed Sauce. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The garage origins of this popular spot are not readily apparent in this barn of an eatery with large windows and classy open-beamed ceiling. It is casual, but in an upscale way, and full of locals from seniors to young families chowing down indoors or on the inviting patio out back. The menu includes Cajun scrambled eggs, goat cheese salad and grilled vegetable quesadillas. Word has it that some local celebrities have been spotted here, too, but the off chance of seeing Sean Penn is not the reason to make the trek here. It is the food served up with down-home friendliness and great efficiency. Review © 2007, Wcities |

558 Bridgeway, 1st Floor San Francisco, CA 94965 United States +1 415 331 3232 http://www.horizonssausalito.com/ |
The building housing this upscale restaurant has a wealth of history to enrich the fine dining experience to be found here. Built in 1898, it is still replete with the elegance of that bygone age with its rich redwood paneling, mural on the ceiling and ornate decorative motifs. It almost distracts from the spectacular view of San Francisco and the Bay. Its many incarnations include a cool jazz club frequented by Hendrix and Joplin in the '60s when it was known as The Trident. The atmosphere is far more sedate today with contemporary California cuisine such as the delectable Calamari appetizer served up by an efficient wait staff. Locals and tourists alike can be found here, dining on crab cakes or sitting on the deck to enjoy the view with a martini. There is live music of a mellow sort on Sundays through the winter and sometimes on Fridays and Saturdays too! Review © 2007, Wcities |

Jack Falstaff is part of the well-known Plump Jack group of restaurants. The interiors have been done up by designer Stanlee Gatti who has created a look of elegance combined with exuberance. The bar offers a whole array of cocktails as well as exclusive wines that can complement your food well. Slow Cooked Kurabuto Pork Belly, Vandenberg Farms Filet Mignon, and Dungeness Crab Stuffed Pequillos are some of the dishes prepared by the special 'slow food' method using fresh ingredients. A late-nineteenth century Parisian brasserie is so lovingly evoked here that one would not be surprised to see Toulouse Lautrec sketching at one of the tables. The food is a good reproduction, too. Steamed Mussels, Oxtail Terrine and Tarte Tatin are all on the menu along with a few California cuisine interlopers, such as Seared Tuna in Lemongrass and Ginger Roasted Artichoke Salad. A mirrored bar, brass detailing, high ceilings, and richly polished wood, make up for a nice break from the casual Californian establishments found in this area. Mama Buzz is a hub. Neighborhood folk pop in for coffee and pastry in the morning, gourmet sandwiches at lunch and espresso and art openings in the evening. The front room features a long diner-style counter, the gallery space is perfect for bigger groups thanks to its numerous Formica tables, and the backyard patio is full of big comfy chairs. Though it is a neighborhood place, even in-the-know San Franciscans make the trek over for one reason in particular: the live music calendar. On any given night, this unassuming little cafe is known to play host to everyone from regional up-and-comers like Hardy Harr to international superstars such as Billy Childish. The food here is delicious, but the view (180 degrees to be exact) of San Francisco Bay is astounding. That California Cuisine-style dining includes quail roasted to succulent perfection and the catch of the day cooked to order. 757 Bridgeway San Francisco, CA 94965-2102 United States +1 415 332 1392 |
This may be a Marin landmark, hence the lack of a need for an actual name, but it is not because of the decor or ambiance. It looks like what it used to be before Marin became chi-chi, which is to say, a working class bar with no pretensions to be anything else. What sets it apart is the live jazz, usually Dixieland, that plays without a cover until 1a. There is garden seating in the back if you'd prefer sunshine or moonlight to the dim light of the bar itself. The food is good with the usual bar sandwiches done well and in huge proportions. The service is efficient from people who love jazz as much as the musicians who play here. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Rosamunde is beloved by all. From bike messengers and bar flys, to hip-hoppers, construction workers, and neighborhood moms with babes in arms, the expertly assembled sausage sandwiches here are undeniable. First, the sausages themselves: popular choices include Chicken & Cherries, Wild Boar, Smoked Lamb, and Beer Sausage. Traditional favorites are well-represented as well, from Bratwurst to Weisswurst and Hungarian. If your philosophy is 'the spicier the better,' try the Merguez. Each sausage comes on a toasty-hot, freshly-baked bun, and with your choice of grilled or fresh onion, sauerkraut, chili, pickle relish, hot or sweet peppers, and an assortment of mustards and ketchups. Rosamunde's German-style potato salad puts other potato salads to shame, so grab a tub. Enjoy your meal at one of the counters facing the hustle and bustle of the Lower Haight, or bring it all next door to Toronado for a beer. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Diners order at the counter and seat themselves at one of the many small tables. Limited outdoor seating is available. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Great views and food |
27 Main Street San Francisco, CA 94920 United States +1 415 435 4527 http://www.samscafe.com/ |
What might be a typical dockside diner is transformed into something special here. It might be the harbor views with quaint ferries traversing the Bay or the sight of fog swirling in from the Golden Gate or it might be the fresh seafood prepared with care and served up with rousing good cheer. The dining area includes a deck on which to catch a few rays with the locals and tourists who are enjoying seafood platters, fish and chips, thick-cut onion rings and the grilled catch of the day. Daily specials are just that and so is the view. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Campy East Bay favorite |
945 San Pablo Avenue (between Solano Avenue and Buchanan Street) San Francisco, CA 94706 United States +1 510 558 0494 |
Treat yourself to something different and have breakfast at this campy East Bay favorite. The family-run roadhouse that looks like it was built with Lincoln Logs, has a casual atmosphere, and serves simple, yet inventive, gourmet dishes. The inside is decorated with vintage knick-knacks and hanging egg beaters. Outside is reminiscent of a residential backyard with patio seating and a lawn with lawn chairs, for guests to relax on while waiting for a table. The whole family works here, expect to see grade school-age Sam at the front counter and his older sister serving fresh-squeezed orange juice. The menu offers a few, select breakfast and lunch choices. Choose from delicious items such as mango and yogurt parfait, Swedish crepes, organic eggs, potato-leek soup, homemade fish sticks, and homemade coffee cake. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Dine artistically |
800 Chestnut Street Between Jones and Leavenworth Streets San Francisco, CA 94133 United States +1 415 771 7020 / +1 415 749 4525 http://www.sanfranciscoart.edu... |
The view of San Francisco from this funky little cafe is worth checking out. It features a courtyard with a fountain that lets you take in the sun on a non-foggy San Francisco day. The best part of this dining experience, though, is the chance to join the intense, Bohemian art crowd from the Institute as they discuss technique or sketch quietly over a half-eaten black bean stew. The food itself may be cheap, but it is good, whether bacon, eggs, and hash browns for breakfast or as authentic a plate of red beans and rice as you will find this side of New Orleans. Do not pass up the baked goods, made onsite and worth the calories. Service is not this place's strong point, but think of it as performance art and enjoy the view. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Sweet and savory creperie |
3913 24th Street (between Noe and Sanchez streets) San Francisco, CA 94112 United States +1 415 282 0344 |
The sunny outdoor patio and funky Medditeranean decor are enough to let the visitor enjoy a meal at this restaurant. Couple this with the fact that the food is outstanding, and this becomes one of the best creperies in The City. Enjoy the tantalizing smells that float out from the kitchen. Outdoors, a blue awning covers the patio. Hearty dinner and sweet dessert crepes are the house specialty. One favorite is the Barcelona-fontina cheese, glazed onions, and spinach. In addition, the restaurant serves a variety of flavorful sandwiches and salads and the service is great. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Spectacular view |
100 Yacht Club Drive San Francisco, CA 94901 United States +1 415 460 6669 http://www.seafoodpeddler.com/ |
The floor-to-ceiling windows here look out over a striking view of water and the Marin Headlands. The food is just as striking, from the tank of Maine lobsters flown in daily to the Scampi Prawns to the changing daily selection of fresh fish cooked to order. Not to mention the oyster bar that brings in people from all over the Bay Area. For dessert, there is nothing better than Bananas Foster over Vanilla Gelato. The mood is casual, as befits a place accessible by car or boat, and the family who runs the place have been making people welcome for 35 years, so they are pros at providing great, friendly service. On Friday and Saturdays, live music with a jazz flair livens things up. Review © 2007, Wcities |

International omelets |
545 Point Lobos Avenue San Francisco, CA 94121 United States http://www.sealrockinn.com/res... |
This Point Lobos restaurant isn't just for Seal Rock Inn guests. The owners would never deprive others of its ocean view or eclectic cuisine. A wonderful choice for breakfast, it serves an international assortment of omelets. Choose from Greek, with feta and fresh spinach, or Italian served with salami, Italian cheese and onions. Maybe you prefer Spanish, bell peppers, onions, celery, tomatoes and cheese, or spicy Mexican, with sausages, jack cheese and jalapeno pepper. On a different note, the French omelet with fruit, sour cream and pine nuts is a change of pace. For lunch and dinner it offers Greek dishes such as Gyros, Shish-ka-bob and hamburgers with feta cheese. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Scandinavian treats |
35 Main Street San Francisco, CA 94920 United States +1 415 435 9767 |
What started as an authentic Swedish pastry shop has expanded into a cafe serving open-faced sandwiches, Swedish meatloaf and light salads. The decor is all huge windows, lace curtains, an odd but fascinating collection of antique rolling pins, and huge display cases full of real Danish pastries. The brisk counter help serves up Princess Cakes and other Swedish specialties (many featuring lingonberries), to the locals who crowd this place. You can enjoy the delicious, buttery pastries plus a great cup of java at one of the tables or out on the deck. There is nothing better outside of Stockholm. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Fine Italian dining on Fisherman's Wharf |
206 Jefferson Street (Fisherman's Wharf) San Francisco, CA 94109 United States +1 415 775 5600 http://tarantinosrestaurant.com/ |
In the 1930s the building that houses this restaurant was a meeting hall for local fishermen. In 1946 the restaurant opened as a sidewalk cafe serving sandwiches and salads. Today, an outdoor cafe still serves lighter fare, while upstairs the restaurant offers a more elegant dining experience, complete with a full view of the Bay and live piano music. The house specialties are the pasta dishes, such as Penne Rustica, which is penne pasta with scallops, swordfish, prawns and mussels in a garlic cream sauce. The restaurant also serves a variety of vegetarian entrees. The service is friendly and quick. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Pier 29, The Embarcadero (At Battery Street) San Francisco, CA 94111-1900 United States +1 415 438 2668 http://www.teatrozinzanni.org |
This is a bewitching combination of European cabaret, theatrical antics, cirque arts, music, comedy and a five-course gourmet dinner. This one-of-a-kind entertainment is a must-see for San Francisco visitors. Teatro ZinZanni has an ensemble cast, with new performers rotating in and out to keep it ever-changing and fresh. The madcap cabaret is headed by a marvelous "hostess" assisted by the "chef de cuisine," who introduces each course, a "maitre d'hotel" of distinction, while comedy and mayhem are supplied by a magical assortment of acrobats, jugglers, comedians, singers, clowns and other performers. Teatro ZinZanni is a project of One Reel, an innovative non-profit arts organization. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Rustic French breakfast & lunch |
155A South Park St. San Francisco, CA 94107 United States +1 415 896 2075 http://www.thebutlerandthechef... |
This authentically French neighborhood oasis provides respite to SoMa professionals in need of breakfasts more pleasurable than a stale danish - and lunches more moving than a microwave burrito. The Butler & the Chef offers an elegant menu of salads, pates, quiches, crepes, croissants and more. The sandwiches (both hot and cold) stand head and shoulders above typical deli fare, all served on freshly baked bread and chock full of specialty meats, luscious veggies and exotic greens. For dessert, enjoy decadent standards like creme brulee, or opt for the simple but stunningly good maple-pecan cookie. Beer and wine are available, in addition to a full list of coffee specialties. See website for menu. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Season's dining |

The Three Seasons is truly one of the best places for traditional Vietnamese food. Make sure to try the Rice Paper Rolls as a starter. For the main course try one of the wonderful curries, fish, or the house specialty - Shaking Beef. The service is excellent and the ambience is entertaining. If you are looking for some peace and quiet, drop in early. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Fresh Mex |
50 Post Street San Francisco, CA 94104-4546 United States +1 415 986 8678 |
This downtown taqueria makes tasty burritos out of fresh vegetables, zesty sauces, and hormone-free meats. With the low prices, you can be sure to get your money's worth. This lunch hot spot is extremely popular with Financial District professionals. It offers no seating inside, but Crocker Galleria has several plastic tables available for seating. The menu is simple with traditional dishes like enchiladas, nachos, and tacos filled with special marinated meats. Try a big burrito stuffed with black beans and pasilla marinated chicken, cilantro-garlic marinated beef or Santa Fe pork. The service is quick. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Bright and sassy |
3814 Piedmont Avenue San Francisco, CA 94611 United States +1 510 653 2444 http://tropixrestaurant.com/ |
The colors of a tropical sunset and the excellent service set the stage at this trendy eatery and that is only right for a place that turns out exceptional Caribbean and Creole cuisine. The feeling is airy with tables well spaced on a black-and-white tiled floor that adds a piquant retro-note. Even airier is the patio that has been dubbed the "Best Place for Outdoor Dining" by the East Bay Express. The crowds of professionals and college students get into the island spirit with Pawpaw, a delicious pastiche of Grilled fresh papaya, curried vegetables and fontina cheese. For a little of everything, there is the Caribbean Sampler, which includes Saltcod-potato Croquettes, Polenta Cakes with Wild Mushroom Sauce and Spiced Chickpeas. For dessert, try sweet plantains topped with vanilla gelato. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Bracing and great |
85 Liberty Ship Way San Francisco, CA 94965-3316 United States +1 415 332 5625 |
The bright colors here may not be a great match for the laid back atmosphere that prevails, but the marina views from both the huge windows and the outdoor deck are ideal. Breakfast is not much more than coffee and pastries here. Lunch and dinner feature excellent salad selections, sandwiches, soups and quiches that are delicious, fresh and a bit more rib-sticking for the locals who are mostly owners of the boats nearby or customers at the kayak and jet ski store next door, who are regulars here. The daily specials sometimes include fresh fish, prepared simply but beautifully, and should not be missed. Review © 2007, Wcities |
