1550 Hyde Cafe and Wine Bar

Rustic cooking

San Francisco, CA 94109
United States
+1 415 775 1550

This cafe-bar on Hyde Street puts the emphasis on cafe. Serving mediocre food at four-star prices, you may leave with something to be desired. With only 12 tables and bare walls, it is rather small and drab. The "wine bar" is almost non existent, and the wine list is too short for this to be considered a legitimate wine bar. If you want to pay these prices, check out one of the other fabulous restaurants down the street. It is money much better spent!

Meeting friends for dinner or brunch in the Castro? Take them to this rambunctious restaurant/bar. You assuredly will not be bored. The restaurant with the generic name is never without a crowd and it is always a lively one. Grab "a little punchy" and wait to be seated. Once you've scored a table, try the Warm Spinach Salad and then move on to a delectable, meat or vegetarian entree. See website for menu, wine list, online reservations and more.

When in the East Bay, it's lunch at 900 Grayson Restaurant. Partake of California cuisine at its best—stone soup, chunky burgers, exotic drinks and American fusion cuisine keep you well occupied. Expect curious names on the menu, such as "Demon Lover" (spicy fried chicken, buttermilk waffle and cream gravy), and "Accessories" (a delicious vegetarian hotch-potch), which when explored, reveal tantalizing flavors. A limited, but decent beverage list makes for good pairing with any meal. While a dinner option is yet to come to the fore, the traditional breakfast can be summed up in one word—mmmmm!

+1 415 551 1590
http://www.absinthe.com/
While the mythical and much-hyped liqueur after which this establishment is named is not served here, many equally potent concoctions are. Specialty drinks, such as the Perfect Pear and the Ginger Rogers, seem to contain pure alcohol, and even a standard margarita packs an unbelievable wallop. If you're looking for something to help mitigate the effects of a strong drink, forget the standard peanuts in an ashtray - Absinthe's bar snacks include bread with a smooth fig spread, croque monsieur, and more. Now, don't forget that Absinthe also functions as a sit-down dining establishment, and their contemporary fare is some of San Francisco's finest. The menu changes daily, but any antipasto platter of cured meats is sure to please, as will the particularly rich duck confit. You can enjoy your meal in the main room or at a cafe-style table on the sidewalk, but if you're looking for a quieter spot, book a table in the private dining room, which even has its own entrance. Notes: The bar is open until 2a F & Sa. See website for details regarding valet parking, brunch, and "Flight Nights."

This homey and inviting cafe pays homage to Hollywood. The jukebox plays soundtracks from the movies, and posters and life size cutouts of Hollywood starlets are placed throughout. The food, a smattering of traditional diner fare like juicy burgers, huge sandwiches, and crispy fries, is good and the prices are right. The Alembic's Southern theme and intimate setting are an intriguing variation from the local pubs and hippie hang outs usually found in the Upper Haight. From the owners of the Magnolia Brewery, the Alembic brings a menu of small plates that can best be described as upscale Soul Food and a diverse drink list full of interesting variations on traditional cocktails as well as beers from around the world. Especially interesting is their entirely local draft beer selection. Low lit and intimate, the Alembic has the feel of a modern speakeasy and is the place to go for unpretentious sophistication in the Haight.

Fisherman Wharf's oldest restaurant began as a crab stand in 1920 serving seafood cocktails out of a paper cup. Today it is a successful fine seafood restaurant specializing in traditional Sicilian recipes. Sitting right on the water, it offers one of the best views of the Bay. The upstairs dining room offers an old-world charm and an award-winning wine list. The downstairs offers favorites that include the homemade seafood sausage, an exclusive Crab Cioppino and a rich Seafood Risotto. It is nothing but mellow here, with the sort of funky atmosphere that Janis and Jimi would have felt at home with. Paintings by local artists cover the walls while the locals add their own color. The menu, a sort of diner chow meets hippie nirvana, has good food, huge portions, and great prices at about $10 or less per person. The home fries are justly famous. Be prepared for lines on the weekends, but the service is always friendly and quick.

The view from this venerable eatery is one of the best in the Bay Area. The food is American with a French accent. Succulent Roast Chicken is always on the menu as is a Filet Mignon cooked to order and some lovely pasta dishes. The menu, like many in the area, changes with the seasons, but the quality is constant. The dining area has high ceilings and huge windows that take advantage of the vista that includes The City and the Bay. The wait staff is personable and efficient. The wine list is good with California vintages being the order of the day along with some select imports from France.

The decor has not changed much since it opened, though the formica counter has been jazzed up with postcards from far and near. The path worn in the floor paint attests to the loyal local following. A breakfast of two eggs, two pancakes, two slices of bacon or sausage is less than $5. Omelettes of all kinds are $5 or less and so are the sandwiches and burgers. There are all sorts of fusion cuisines going on these days but none quite like what you will find here at this unassuming little family-run restaurant. The food is Indian. Not a region of India, but a little of every kind of regional cooking from that subcontinent. But the fusion does not end there. The menu includes whatever strikes the fancy of the owners, so next to the Vegetable Samosas you'll find Spinach Ravioli and a specialty of the house, a Punjabi Tostada. It all tastes great, especially with the house-made Chutney and Tamarind Sauce. The chat from the family that cooks and serves is engaging and so are the crowds that include locals, tourists and retirees.

An upscale take on regional American cuisine is served here in an authentic American setting. The casually chic diner with counter service and a small full service bar is housed in a converted gas station for an effect that is whimsical and nostalgic. The food may inspire some nostalgia, too. The menu offers meat loaf with gravy and garlic mashed potatoes, shrimp croquettes with roasted pepper aioli, as well as grilled steak and fish dishes. Seasonal specials round out the entrees. The noise level can get high here, but the food is delicious and the wine list, heavy on California vintages, makes up for that as does a personable wait staff.

Seriously good seafood
60 Corte Madera Avenue
San Francisco, CA 94925-1303

+1 415 927 0149
The seafood here could not be fresher or better prepared. The decor is early waterfront, but, this being Marin, that bric-a-brac is vintage, not second-hand. The food is also deceptive. Seafood platters, batter-fried shrimp and such are the order of the day and though it is the staple bill of fare at seafood places everywhere, here the batter is light and ever so slightly sweet, which makes it a good complement to the fish and shrimp it encases. Moreover, the frying is done to crisp perfection, and the greasiness is virtually nonexistent. There are broiled lobster tails and fish dishes, too, depending on what the day's catch is, as well as a nice Linguine with Clam Sauce, and kid's meals that are a great deal. The crowd is locals of all ages, but especially families with kids, and the wait staff is great with them all.

If you're in the mood for a quick, scrumptious burger but just can't face the fast-food joint, try Belly Burger in the Outer Richmond. Pay just five dollars and get one of the best-tasting burgers in town. Plus, they have all-you-can-add toppings and a "natural beef" option for those who prefer it. Toppings go way beyond the usual lettuce, tomato and onion - try avocado, sprouts or even pineapple atop one of their perfectly grilled patties. You won't leave disappointed.

Bender's is a Mission District legend. Firebombed into oblivion in 2006, its valiant founders rallied the troops, and with a cavalcade of community support, reopened just a year and half later -- bigger and better than ever. Noteworthy improvements include some terrifically sleazy signage rescued from Valencia Street's now-defunct Leather Tongue Video, as well as a bar surface fashioned out of a lane from the bowling alley now inhabited by Amoeba, and of course some choice burnt-to-a-crisp fire wreckage kept around as trophies of the place's victory over tragedy. Comfy booths surround the pool table and the grill, which is operated by the folks at Weird Fish. The beer selection is great, the booze selection is fab, and as the straight-shootin' staff'll tell ya, wine is "red" or "white".

This all-night Richmond diner sticks to an entertainment theme. With a video store in front and monster-sized TVs, it redefines the phrase 'dinner and a movie'. The decor has a nostalgic feel with '50s-style booths and checkboard linoleum floors. The walls are filled with movie posters and patrons not talking have their eyes on the big screen television. Burgers, sandwiches, milkshakes, soups and more are available. The menu is filled with satisfying contemporary favorites. It is great place to take a friend for munchies after the bars close.

Barbecue aficionados can be fanatically devoted to a particular regional style and those who swear by the Memphis variety, pick this place for the rich smokey goodness to be found here. The place is as down home as the cooking with a cinderblock exterior, but the heavenly aroma of sausage links, chicken, ribs and the house special Pulled pork transforms this unprepossessing spot into a destination eatery for the Bay Area. The side orders of coleslaw, beans, potato salad are terrific, too. The service is fast and friendly.

Four locations in the city explain Burger Bistro's popularity. It serves American cuisine on all days of the week and has a heavy flow of customers. As you may have guessed from the name, the hamburgers here are a favorite, though there are other items on the menu too. Since burgers may not do it for some people, the place also offers fresh salads as well as sandwiches to name a few. Though it may sound like a fast-food joint, they do provide seating. Don't expect to be waited on over here, you just have to walk up to the counter and place your order and a server shall bring it to your table.

Upscale diner food is the star here with classic comfort foods re-imagined as gourmet classics. The Chicken Pot Pie is full of the freshest produce and Bechemal Sauce instead of the usual vapid veggies and starchy gravy. The classic Chilled Green Salad has a Pesto Sauce instead of mere oil and vinegar. The place is hopping all day with a nimble wait staff delivering plates heaped high with food to the dotcommers, students and hip families that frequent the chrome and cement favorite. You will smell it as soon as you are within a five-mile radius: barbeque. Really good barbeque, courtesy of the joint formerly known as Brother-In-Law's. Whether you pick ribs, sausage links, chicken, or the luscious slow-cooked Beef Brisket, you will be in heaven. The sauce is a local mystery. No one knows exactly what makes it so spicy sweet, but it is wonderful, making for a fabulously messy meal with much finger licking. Sides include greens, potato salad, beans, cornbread and coleslaw. If there is room in your tummy, get dessert. Deep-Dish Peach Cobbler comes highly recommended.

It is all rib-sticking hearty, but the idea that this is what you'd find in a dive south of the Mason-Dixon line is a fantasy. Never mind. It's a fun and casual place for a great meal replete with comfort foods that nurture the cross-section of patrons young and old that pack the place. The decor is contemporary with soft lighting and a single rose on each table. The clientele consists of neighborhood regulars and first-timers. Whether dining for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, the staff is welcoming and eager to please. The breakfast menu rules with items such as Pecan Pancakes topped with whipped cream and covered in maple syrup and the Smoked Salmon Platter served with a bagel. Lunch offers Curry Puffs, a crispy pastry stuffed with yellow curry chicken, potatoes and Thai seasonings, or you can indulge in one of the contemporary sandwiches or salads. For dinner try the Spicy Garlic Snapper served sauteed in olive oil and a Thai chili sauce. The list is heavy on California selections and starts at $12 a bottle.

This contemporary American bistro is a godsend to people who like to eat late at night. It makes a great alternative to 24-hour greasy spoons. This modern diner has a retro feel. Sit on the red padded bar stools at the chrome counter and slurp up a chocolate milkshake. Located in the theater district, a block from Union Square, Cafe Mason serves breakfast, lunch or dinner whenever you want and at affordable prices. The cooks make most things from scratch including homemade pastas, desserts, soups, and sauces. Nothing beats hot buttermilk pancakes topped with pure maple syrup at 4a.

Cafe Rouge, located in the heart of Berkeley's hoppin' 4th Street shopping district, is an East Bay institution. Foodies flock from far and wide for treats as simple as a cheeseburger and as complex as a Mediterranean-style lamb shank entree. Post-industrial chic describes the decor and the cuisine at this trendy spot at the foot of Telegraph Hill. The brick walls are covered with ultra-modern art and the tables and chairs themselves seemed to have been inspired by a Miro painting. The food is innovative, mixing the cuisines of several countries to offer Chicken Kabobs, fresh pastas that change daily, and for breakfast you will find hearty granola, huge waffles, or eggs. The wait staff is hip and personable to the mix of Financial District denizens and other upscale locals who share the space with tourists.

Dark lighting and tables for two make this swanky subterranean club a very hip scene. Swing dancers, sharp dressers, and literature students from local colleges sip cocktails and ask each other to dance. The single pool table is rarely free. Live music and DJs of all genres play here. Before 11p, there is a short but excellent menu of contemporary fusion food, featuring entrees such as Wild Mushroom Strudel and Grilled Swordfish. Cover: varies

Its not just SFMOMA-goers that fill this sleek hi-tech eatery. The freshly baked scones and other bakery treats tempt locals into taking a mid-morning break. The lunch and dinner menus feature such upscale offerings as delicately seasoned rock shrimp over risotto and pannini with a variety of toppings. The din can be a little overwhelming at peak hours (it is the price you pay for all that stylish but sound-reflective chrome and glass), but the ambience is arty and the students from the local art academy sketching at a nearby table make for a poshly Bohemian ambiance.

The kitchy erstatz Victoriana that took the '70s by storm went upscale with this chain. The only Northern California branch occupies the top floor of Macy's Union Square location. Among the polished brass fixtures, marble-topped almost everything and the sinuous mouth-blown glass lamps of this operation, ladies who lunch, tourist families, and locals negotiate a voluminous menu. Choose from crisp salads, tasty burgers, nicely done pasta dishes, fried chicken and, of course, cheesecake. It can get very hectic at peak hours, but the service is good and the experience rewarding all around.

Cliff House

Great Locale, So So Food
1090 Point Lobos
San Francisco, CA 94121
United States
+1 415 386 3330
http://www.cliffhouse.com
The Cliff House, where San Francisco begins, has always been a quaint and utterly charming stop off point for San Francisco visitors. Even with a renovation, the Cliff House maintains its original charm, but is now 21st century spectacular. Gone are the old fashioned 1900's mahogany/ tar & spar-like decor and fittings, supplanted by brilliant vistas available throughout by the walls upon walls of glass overlooking the rocky precipice to the Pacific. The most striking addition is the ultra-modern Sutro Wing, home of Sutro's, which features seafood and organic produce. The Cliff House Bistro - situated in the original location - offers more traditional fare and it has a beautiful bar. Another addition is the Cliff House To Go, for takeaway orders. Diners should be aware that despite the ultra modern decor, the cuisine at the Cliff House leaves a lot to be desired. Besides being overpriced, most of the fare is tasteless. On Thanksgiving, for example you might order the turkey dinner, and not know whether you were eating turkey, chicken, fish, or ham! Or maybe it is simply cardboard. If the Cliff House is on your itinerary -- and it should be -- make the most of the tremendous ocean vistas, but steer clear of the food.
