900 Grayson Restaurant

Soul food
900 Grayson Street
West Berkeley
San Francisco, CA 94710
United States
+1 510 704 9900
http://www.900grayson.com/
When in the East Bay, it's lunch at 900 Grayson Restaurant. Partake of California cuisine at its best—stone soup, chunky burgers, exotic drinks and American fusion cuisine keep you well occupied. Expect curious names on the menu, such as "Demon Lover" (spicy fried chicken, buttermilk waffle and cream gravy), and "Accessories" (a delicious vegetarian hotch-potch), which when explored, reveal tantalizing flavors. A limited, but decent beverage list makes for good pairing with any meal. While a dinner option is yet to come to the fore, the traditional breakfast can be summed up in one word—mmmmm!

All You Knead

Funky eatery in Haight Ashbury

San Francisco, CA 94117

It is nothing but mellow here, with the sort of funky atmosphere that Janis and Jimi would have felt at home with. Paintings by local artists cover the walls while the locals add their own color. The menu, a sort of diner chow meets hippie nirvana, has good food, huge portions, and great prices at about $10 or less per person. The home fries are justly famous. Be prepared for lines on the weekends, but the service is always friendly and quick.

This restaurant offers downtown vegetarians fresh, affordable meals. The casual dining room is cute and simple, usually filled with a steady stream of patrons. It's a favorite with local vegetarians, as well as tourists taking the downtown tour. The breakfast menu is very contemporary, serving omelets, hot cakes and fruit. Later the chefs start cooking Eggplant Marinara Hero Sandwiches, Falafels, Barbecued Tofu Burgers, Potato-Tofu Raviloli, curries and specialty dinner salads. Appetizers include homemade Hummus with Grilled Whole-wheat Chapati, Black Bean Nachos, and Indian vegetable-filled pastries with chutney. Vegans will find nine different entrees/sandwiches to choose from.

Arizmendi Bakery Cooperative

United States
+1 415 566 3117

This Inner Sunset neighborhood co-op, affiliated with Berkeley's Cheese Board, just may ruin you for any other bakery. They bake a wide range of breads, with a whole list of specials every day (grab a loaf of the Irish Soda Bread on Tuesdays). They turn out specialty scones and muffins all baked with tender loving care. Their cookies are at once familiar and surprisingly new (try Auntie Mabel's Cookie Brittle or the moist and crumbly Apricot-Almond). Kids love the crispy/cheesy bread sticks. If it's more than just a snack you're looking for, join the throngs filing in from the far reaches of the city for a slice or four of Arizmendi's famous pizza. They top each one with the freshest of locally raised veggies and the creamiest of specialty cheeses. Eat yours at one of two tables inside, on the benches out front, or in Golden Gate Park just a block away. See website for complete list of weekly bread, scone, muffin and cookie specials, as well as a mission statement and a comprehensive pizza calendar.

Aroma Espresso Bar

Sunny stop
450 Sansome Street
San Francisco, CA 94111
United States
+1 415 982 3101
The specials at this bright chrome and glass place include the Aromachino (milk, espresso and vanilla flavoring over ice) and the Philly-aroma (hot pastrami with peppers and mozzarella). The names are cutesy, but the quality is seriously good. The counter staff is an efficient group of twentysomethings that make getting your meal lightning fast. That is why local Financial District types crowd this place all day, whether for a light lunch (there are salads and soups, too), or to take a break on the outdoor patio with a pastry and a cup of the expertly brewed coffee drink.

Art & Larry's Deli

East meets west
11 Digital Drive, Suite C
San Francisco, CA 94949-5736
United States
+1 415 382 8298
The guys who run this authentic New York-style deli have done an excellent job of recreating the East Coast deli experience out west. The generically functional tables, chairs and counter could have been transported as one from Brooklyn to the delight of the locals who crowd it. Ditto the contents of the display cases in the take-out at the rear. All the greats that can be difficult to find in the Bay Area are here and served up in heaping portions that would please your Bubbe. The Beef Brisket, in particular, is delicious and so tender that you can cut it with your fork. It is great with a Dr. Brown's cel-ray tonic or Cream Soda. For breakfast, try the lox and eggs or the plump cheese blintzes bursting with farmer's cheese or the matzo brie. For desert, try the creamy and dense cheesecake.

San Francisco, CA 94122

Also known since the 40s as Art's Fine Foods, this tiny counter-service place serves honest food at honest prices and always with a smile. The decor has not changed much since it opened, though the formica counter has been jazzed up with postcards from far and near. The path worn in the floor paint attests to the loyal local following. A breakfast of two eggs, two pancakes, two slices of bacon or sausage is less than $5. Omelettes of all kinds are $5 or less and so are the sandwiches and burgers. Tangy and tasty Korean BBQ is a recent and popular addition to the menu. Only cash is accepted.

This restaurant is a dream come true for owners Alicia Petrakis and Eleni Lolas. After bowling over clients through their catering business, this is their latest offering. The menu is a combination of different kinds of Mediterranean food; from good old fashioned comfort food to foods from different ethnic recipes. Marinated Grilled Pork, Chicken Souvla and Orange Cognac Finished Pork Tenderloin are some of the stars on the menu. Brunch will be an eye opener as well, with Layered Mediterranean Pancakes and the Polenta and Egg stack - a must try. So seize the day and enjoy a meal at this fantastic eatery.

This neighborhood bistro is small but welcoming, strictly serving affordable French cuisine. Located in the Presidio Heights district, it has been recognized as one of the city's Top 100 restaurants by the San Francisco Chronicle. This is no small feat considering the competition. The atmosphere is that of a typical bistro, simple, clean and comfortable. Outdoor seating is limited but available. Dinner entrees include Sonoma Rabbit in a light Dijon sauce served with pasta and fresh vegetables and a Ragout of Lamb served with Duchesse potatoes. The wine list is adequate with a nice selection of Californian and French champagne, white, red, and sparkling wines (prices vary). You will find that everything is wonderful, from the Escargots Forrestiere to the Creme Brulee.

For years, Tartine Bakery has bowled everyone over with mind-bendingly awesome baked goods. Then they set their sights on dinner. They opened Bar Tartine on a hoppin' section of Valencia Street, and fans of rustic-but-elegant cuisine lined up. Every meal starts with a hearty hunk of crusty bread that will make you completely reevaluate your feelings about crusty bread. Enjoy small plates and wines by the glass at the inviting bar, or sit down to a full multi-course feast at a table. The menu changes seasonally, but expect to find nothing but the finest in locally raised meats, seafood and vegetables. The wine selection is excellent, Chimay is on draft, and the desserts (as per the place's pedigree) are jaw dropping.

Nearly every day of the week and definitely on weekends, you can find bleary-eyed characters in casual yet funky dress recovering from the night before in this friendly cafe. Perhaps because of its proximity to the Lower Haight and the dance club Justice League, this place constantly seems to be serving up eggs, crepes and smoothies to a crowd of cute, chic, blase twenty somethings. The counter help is possibly the best in the city and the ginger-infused lemonade works wonders on a groggy head. Note: Cash only.

This is the Marin version of down-home cooking in a glitzy diner setting complete with formica tables and linoleum flooring. There are grits on the menu, but they are mixed with portobello mushrooms, and the same menu offers both Meat Loaf and Poached Salmon Salad. It is all rib-sticking hearty, but the idea that this is what you'd find in a dive south of the Mason-Dixon line is a fantasy. Never mind. It's a fun and casual place for a great meal replete with comfort foods that nurture the cross-section of patrons young and old that pack the place. The wait staff is nurturing, too, in its own way, especially when bearing Chicken-fried Steak or Tapioca Pudding.

An unassuming hamburger joint this may be, but the burgers are terrific, made from quality cuts of lean beef, cooked to order and then slathered with onions that are fried to just this side of caramelized. The patrons are Financial District types and other assorted office workers grabbing a quick bite for lunch. It is the same crowd at breakfast, though the offerings of eggs and hash browns while still well-priced are not quite as tasty as the burgers. The owner is friendly, but usually too busy to chat while giving great service to the crowds his food attracts.

This cafeteria is not the fanciest place to catch a bite before the symphony or ballet, but it is several cuts above the usual cafeteria fare. Not surprising considering the clientele, which includes employees of nearby City Hall, is heavy on patrons of the arts in the area for a culture fix. The fare includes a creamy and delicious Spinach Polenta and several hot and cold pasta dishes as well as salads, soups, sandwiches and a tempting selection of sweet treats from Just Desserts. The cuisine is Italian (but of course) that uses the freshest and finest ingredients available. The pasta selection, made with Mr. Coppola's own brand, includes Penne Al Tonno, a mix of spicy tomato sauce and house-cured tuna. Sunday brunch features frittatas, omelettes, and Muffulatas, the Italian-by-way-of-New Orleans sandwich that serves two easily. The wine list has the best of the Coppola vineyards in all price ranges. The decor is classic Italian restaurant, down to the checkered tablecloths, and so is the food which includes carefully prepared spaghetti, ravioli, lasagna as well as Osso Bucco and Scampi that is served up by a quick wait staff to tourists, yuppies and locals who have been coming here for more than twenty years. A substantial breakfast is served all day. The house coffee is made from beans roasted in-house and makes the visit worthwhile by itself. Sip some over an Italian pastry while you watch the passing parade.

Its not just SFMOMA-goers that fill this sleek hi-tech eatery. The freshly baked scones and other bakery treats tempt locals into taking a mid-morning break. The lunch and dinner menus feature such upscale offerings as delicately seasoned rock shrimp over risotto and pannini with a variety of toppings. The din can be a little overwhelming at peak hours (it is the price you pay for all that stylish but sound-reflective chrome and glass), but the ambience is arty and the students from the local art academy sketching at a nearby table make for a poshly Bohemian ambiance.

This airy cafe serves up some of the best Ethiopian food in the Bay Area. Inside the cream walls decorated with haunting Ethiopian art, you will find tasty entrees with many vegetarian options to choose from. The owners import their spices direct from Africa and only the best will do. You will taste the difference in their Messer-Wot (lentils served with a spicy red chili sauce) and Banatu (tender sliced beef in a piquant cardamom sauce). As a side dish, try the Teff, a baked and delicately seasoned, slightly nut-flavored grain that is an Ethiopian specialty. The service is quick and friendly from a wait staff that is happy to explain anything on the menu.

This sort of place, airy, full of pampered greenery and an eclectic menu of regional and national cuisines, has almost become a cliche in Northern California. Yet when an establishment is this well-run and the food this good, it soars ably above that cliche. The dining area is bright, casually elegant and offers excellent service for local shoppers and business types taking a break from their day. Thai-style chicken vies with Maryland Crab Cakes and Veal with Apple Butter on the menu. The ingredients, as you would expect in an upscale place in this part of the country, are farm fresh and the selections change seasonally to take advantage of that. There is a full service bar and a good wine list heavy on California vintages.

The kitchy erstatz Victoriana that took the '70s by storm went upscale with this chain. The only Northern California branch occupies the top floor of Macy's Union Square location. Among the polished brass fixtures, marble-topped almost everything and the sinuous mouth-blown glass lamps of this operation, ladies who lunch, tourist families, and locals negotiate a voluminous menu. Choose from crisp salads, tasty burgers, nicely done pasta dishes, fried chicken and, of course, cheesecake. It can get very hectic at peak hours, but the service is good and the experience rewarding all around.

Great Locale, So So Food

San Francisco, CA 94121

+1 415 386 3330
http://www.cliffhouse.com
The Cliff House, where San Francisco begins, has always been a quaint and utterly charming stop off point for San Francisco visitors. Even with a renovation, the Cliff House maintains its original charm, but is now 21st century spectacular. Gone are the old fashioned 1900's mahogany/ tar & spar-like decor and fittings, supplanted by brilliant vistas available throughout by the walls upon walls of glass overlooking the rocky precipice to the Pacific. The most striking addition is the ultra-modern Sutro Wing, home of Sutro's, which features seafood and organic produce. The Cliff House Bistro - situated in the original location - offers more traditional fare and it has a beautiful bar. Another addition is the Cliff House To Go, for takeaway orders. Diners should be aware that despite the ultra modern decor, the cuisine at the Cliff House leaves a lot to be desired. Besides being overpriced, most of the fare is tasteless. On Thanksgiving, for example you might order the turkey dinner, and not know whether you were eating turkey, chicken, fish, or ham! Or maybe it is simply cardboard. If the Cliff House is on your itinerary -- and it should be -- make the most of the tremendous ocean vistas, but steer clear of the food.

This tiny but bright eatery on Haight serves some of the most authentic Cajun/Creole food to be found this far from Louisiana. There are two reasons. First, the owners are from the Bayou State and they know what they are doing when it comes to whipping up the down-home cooking from that region. Second, they fly in real Gulf of Mexico seafood to go into the Jambalaya, Etouffee and gumbo that they serve up with style and a smile. The space is decorated with feathered masks and posters from The Big Easy in Mardi Gras colors of purple, yellow and green. Lines of people from all over form at peak hours. It is worth the wait. This is one of the only places in The City that can cook a pot of breakfast grits properly.

This may be the only outpost of this popular Filippino chain in the Bay Area. It certainly attracts ex-pats from all over craving a taste of the special gooey-rich cakes turned out in a cornucopia of flavors. Others come for the excellent Filippino dishes served cafeteria-style, particularly the traditional breakfast of tasty fried rice, eggs and spicy-sweet 'longaniza' sausage. You will also find 'lumpia', 'pancit', stir-fried glass noodles with veggies and meat, as well as slow-cooked, flavorful 'adobo chicken'. For an unusual and delicious change of pace, try the avocado milkshake.

Soft Polenta with grilled portobello mushrooms, sauteed spring greens and shaved mezo Vella secco - now that sounds like music to the stomach! But these Mediterranean musings are many, thrown in with a lot of green choices. Sometimes it's baby leeks, asparagus with feta or manchegi cheese; while other times it's garden lettuces and nicoise olives! Walk in and find out which ingredient is served how as you take in the spectacular panorama of the sea. And when munching on your entrees, watch the boats on the Pacific bob to and fro! Keep in mind, the takeout window is open every day as well. See website for menus and more.

In spite of its location near all the Lower Haight clubs and bars, this is not what you think it is. The name refers to coffee, which are the main liquid being consumed here. If caffeine is not your style, try a fruit smoothie or a cup of tea. Sandwiches, salads and breakfast items are $5-9 and the portions are large. The place is extremely busy on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Note: Cash only.

Do not mistake this diner with a typical San Francisco tourist trap. Beyond the garishly painted exterior featuring the Golden Gate Bridge and a curly-cue city skyline, you will find a cozy converted railroad car that serves up some very fine burgers, fries and milkshakes. But that is not all. Portuguese specialties such as Bacalbau a Gomes de Sa (codfish with eggs and olives) can be found depending, according to the menu, on availability. The service is always good, but the crowd changes with the hour. Daytime and early evening, it is full of local professionals with their families and students from around town. Later at night, after the area bars have closed down, it becomes a bit more boisterous with people drifting in for a munchie and a cup of java after a night of drinking.

The garage origins of this popular spot are not readily apparent in this barn of an eatery with large windows and classy open-beamed ceiling. It is casual, but in an upscale way, and full of locals from seniors to young families chowing down indoors or on the inviting patio out back. The menu includes Cajun scrambled eggs, goat cheese salad and grilled vegetable quesadillas. Word has it that some local celebrities have been spotted here, too, but the off chance of seeing Sean Penn is not the reason to make the trek here. It is the food served up with down-home friendliness and great efficiency.

Not very far from this outdoor dining restaurant is the very famous big wave surfing point. You can get your surfing tips as surfers often drop by at Half moon. Its proximity to the Pacific of course brings home the fresh sea food. Lobsters, squids are common on the menu. The avid drinker can try the many crafted beers brewed on the site. Most of the steaks are heavy and hefty, but a run along the coastline would make you forget it. Enjoy live bands playing around three to four times a week. Also in order to not let you freeze, the open patio is fixed with heaters at strategic places. Indoor diners can admire the Pillar Point Harbor view with or without the beer!

The sandwiches are the traditional Vietnamese-style baguettes hollowed out and stuffed with rich and hearty fillings of barbecued beef, spicy chicken or pork. Take a trip to the 1930s by visiting this corner coffee shop that is been around since then and has not changed much over the years, except for changing hands to the family that has run it with style and good humor since the '50s. The neon sign is vintage, too. Sit at the counter with locals, or in one of the booths by the huge windows, sip a lemon Coke and listen to your favorite oldie playing on the jukebox. There are the usual burgers, fries, shakes, and banana splits on the menu, with eggs and pancakes for the breakfast crowd. It is all good and there is not a thing to break the spell of being in another time and place.

The bright dining area that also serves Burritos and Tacos is festooned with strings of small clay cups, jarritos in Spanish, and there are wonderful touches of colorful Mexican arts and crafts everywhere. Great deals

Beneath the ceiling fans of this diner, you can get a prime rib dinner (a good one at that) for a very reasonable price. You will get a Lettuce Salad and a bowl of soup with that. The prices are good, but the ambience is only so-so, as are the breakfasts. The paint could be spruced up a bit and some of the tables have seen better days, but the expenditure would probably raise the prices. Seen like that, the faded glory becomes more charming than anything else. The service is brisk if impersonal with the crowd of tourists and blue-collar locals, but at those prices, who cares?

This trendy lunch and dinner joint has one of the healthiest menus in the city. Set amidst the chic Chestnut Street boutiques, Lettus Cafe features an internationally inspired vegan-friendly menu, chock-full of organic and fresh-to-order entrees. Generally speaking, it attracts the hip and health conscious marina crowd, so more often than not, thin ladies and overly-tanned men can be seen lining up around the block for Mango Lime Chicken paninis, open faced crab cake sandwiches, and the Gardenbuger, which is by far the house favorite. The rustic decor is swanky and inviting, but if you're in a hurry, there's a 'grab-and-go' option. Portions are on the large side, so you certainly get what you pay for. It's the perfect place to go for a mid-week bite, a Sunday Brunch or anytime your in need of a corporate detox.

When this place hit its 50th anniversary, that fact was celebrated at the Oakland Museum of California. That is how truly beloved this East Bay eatery is. It is dedicated to old-fashioned southern cooking and treating the clientele at its diner-style establishment like family. There are not many other places north of the Mason-Dixon line, or south for that matter, that offer authentic black-eyed peas or Lemon Icebox Pie (a sort of lemon meringue on steroids). If you have never had grits and eggs before, there is no better place to sample them. Whole pies run $10.50-15.

This downtown eatery is a blast to the past if you're over 50 or watch Nick at Night. Find two other downtown locations on Mason and Sutter streets. A retro menu and a décor to match makes a comfortable place to dine alone or with family and friends. Music from the 50s plays in the background and the memorabilia from the era decorates the walls. Happy Days worthy meals include the LA Burger (chilies, bacon, guacamole and cheese), the Moon Doggie (beef hot dog, split and grilled, with relish, onion, and fries), banana splits and cherry Cokes. Breakfast favorites served include a mean corned beef hash, French toast and a Denver omelet. You'll also find California café-style entrees like the Chicken Caesar Burrito, Penne in a Marinara Sauce and New York steak.

Okay, do not go here for the food. It is not bad, but it is not great either, with serviceable omelettes, burgers, sandwiches, and red (not white!) clam chowder. Do not go here for the decor, which borders dangerously on early 60s in alarming shades of orange, harvest gold, and avocado. We go to this place because of the view, the friendly service and the low prices, in that order. Located just up the road from The Cliff House, it perches on a cliffside that overlooks the Pacific Ocean and Seal Rock to the west and the ruins of the Sutro Baths with a glimpse of the Marin Headlands to the north. Counter service if you must, but get a table by the picture window where you can and marvel at the wonder of the conjunction of sea and sky.

Mama Buzz is a hub. Neighborhood folk pop in for coffee and pastry in the morning, gourmet sandwiches at lunch and espresso and art openings in the evening. The front room features a long diner-style counter, the gallery space is perfect for bigger groups thanks to its numerous Formica tables, and the backyard patio is full of big comfy chairs. Though it is a neighborhood place, even in-the-know San Franciscans make the trek over for one reason in particular: the live music calendar. On any given night, this unassuming little cafe is known to play host to everyone from regional up-and-comers like Hardy Harr to international superstars such as Billy Childish. The food is fresh, the beverages (including local beer on draft) are cheap, the art is wild, and admission is nil. See website for event schedule and more.

Huge omelettes are the draw at this upscale diner-style eatery. Locals pack the counter and the booths for them served with delectable home fries and a variety of fillings that takes a page and a half of the menu to list. You will also find Eggs Benedict, Eggs Florentine, eggs poached, scrambled, over easy and sunny side up. If you are not in the mood for eggs, the waffles are equally enormous and the French toast is decadently sweet. For lunch there is the classic assortment of burgers and sandwiches, of which the crab cake is especially noteworthy. The service is fast and friendly in the classic diner tradition.
