Chenery Park Restaurant

Neighborhood Gourmet Comfort
683 Chenery Street
(at Diamond Street)
San Francisco, CA 94131
United States
+1 415 337 8537
http://www.chenerypark.com/
Continually singled out as one of San Francisco's best neighborhood restaurants, this off-the-beaten-path find has led locals to beat new paths straight into the charming neighborhood of Glen Park. The menu is a familiar but contemporary take on comfort food, some of which comes with an added dash of Southern flair. The gourmet macaroni and cheese is the talk of the town, the seafood gumbo is a hearty bowl of pure love, and the grilled lamb is without peer. Weekly specials include brisket, meatloaf, and "fried chicken and fixins". There is a full bar, an impressive wine list and a carefully chosen selection of draft beers (from such reputable micros as Anchor and Russian River). See website for full menu, weekly specials, kids night details and more.

Fresca

South American dining
2114 Fillmore St
San Francisco, CA 94115
United States

This restaurant makes a strong bid for educating the public to the culinary wonders of Peruvian dining. Wooden tables and a slate floor are visually pleasing, creating such a country feel that one half expects the waiters to draw their water pitchers from a backyard well. An open kitchen adds to the ambiance. The menu features a mix of meat and seafood dishes, highlighted by the soy roasted trout and the seafood stew. Latin beers are plenty, compensating for the absence of mixed drinks.

Sure, the culture of Jamaica is relaxed, kick-back, and take-it-easy. The flavor of Jamaican food, however, is full of energy, spice and is bold and vibrant. Despite its tiny stature, this restaurant cooks up the grandest island recipes in the largest of portions. Step inside the magenta and mustard-colored walls and order off the authentic menu: noodles, BBQ, stir fries, salads and a tempting variety of daily specialties. Try the jook, a traditional rice porridge rumored to have great and mystical medicinal powers. Note: cash only.

A taste of Cuba
3077 24th Street
Between Treat Avenue and Folsom Street
San Francisco, CA 94110-4145

The savory smell of roasting meat fills the air as the overhead Latin Salsa music makes passersby want to stop and check out this Mission District restaurant. The food is traditional Caribbean, which means spicy and flavorful and served in huge portions by a friendly and quick staff. Items include the classic fried plantains and green chillies stuffed with cheese. The restaurant is named for its specialty, a fresh tropical fruit shake. The service is quick and friendly.

Port Cafe

Pan-American cuisine
3499 16th Street
(at the corner of Sanchez Street)
San Francisco, CA 94114
United States

Classic Amercian breakfasts from bagels to omelettes to pancakes start your day at this tidy little diner. Vibrant Cuban fare rounds out the day with tasty dishes such as Garlic Roasted Pork with a dusting of lively spices and Flank Steak slow-simmered in Tomatoes, and a classic and flavorful Black Bean and rice plates. The crowd here is a mini-melting pot of the surrounding neighorhoods, with yuppies, ex-pats, and club kids and filling the tables as a briskly efficient wait staff keeps appetites satisfied.

Primo Patio Cafe

Lively and delicious
214 Townsend Street
Between 3rd and 4th Streets
San Francisco, CA 94115
United States
+1 415 957 1129

Forest-dwelling fish decorate the mural on the back patio and that is an excellent indicator of the whimsy and fun to be found at this spot popular with students professionals and pretty much everyone else in The City. The cuisine is Caribbean with a dash of Pacific Rim and while the breakfasts are good, it is the lunch and dinner that draw. Find great Jerked Chicken, hot and sweet beef, chicken and pork barbecue all brought to you by a friendly wait staff. Specialty drinks include the potent, and currently very hip, Mojito as well as Buli Buli, a concoction of Cuban beer, lime juice, sugar and ice.

Local women love this new Haight Street boutique. It is a nurturing place to shop, with wide-open spaces and nice-sized collection of great clothes that go from day to evening. It eatures hip independent brands like Chaiken & Capone, Theory, Madison Brown, Mandalay and Beth Bowley. You might find a cashmere tube top and matching poncho, a pair of basic black pants or a sexy dress for a night out on the town.

Tropix Caribbean Restaurant

Bright and sassy
3814 Piedmont Avenue
San Francisco, CA 94611
United States
+1 510 653 2444
http://tropixrestaurant.com/
The colors of a tropical sunset and the excellent service set the stage at this trendy eatery and that is only right for a place that turns out exceptional Caribbean and Creole cuisine. The feeling is airy with tables well spaced on a black-and-white tiled floor that adds a piquant retro-note. Even airier is the patio that has been dubbed the "Best Place for Outdoor Dining" by the East Bay Express. The crowds of professionals and college students get into the island spirit with Pawpaw, a delicious pastiche of Grilled fresh papaya, curried vegetables and fontina cheese. For a little of everything, there is the Caribbean Sampler, which includes Saltcod-potato Croquettes, Polenta Cakes with Wild Mushroom Sauce and Spiced Chickpeas. For dessert, try sweet plantains topped with vanilla gelato.
