This Inner Sunset neighborhood co-op, affiliated with Berkeley's Cheese Board, just may ruin you for any other bakery. They bake a wide range of breads, with a whole list of specials every day (grab a loaf of the Irish Soda Bread on Tuesdays). They turn out specialty scones and muffins all baked with tender loving care. Their cookies are at once familiar and surprisingly new (try Auntie Mabel's Cookie Brittle or the moist and crumbly Apricot-Almond). Kids love the crispy/cheesy bread sticks. If it's more than just a snack you're looking for, join the throngs filing in from the far reaches of the city for a slice or four of Arizmendi's famous pizza. The guys who run this authentic New York-style deli have done an excellent job of recreating the East Coast deli experience out west. The generically functional tables, chairs and counter could have been transported as one from Brooklyn to the delight of the locals who crowd it. Ditto the contents of the display cases in the take-out at the rear. All the greats that can be difficult to find in the Bay Area are here and served up in heaping portions that would please your Bubbe. The Beef Brisket, in particular, is delicious and so tender that you can cut it with your fork. It is great with a Dr. Brown's cel-ray tonic or Cream Soda. The decor has not changed much since it opened, though the formica counter has been jazzed up with postcards from far and near. The path worn in the floor paint attests to the loyal local following. A breakfast of two eggs, two pancakes, two slices of bacon or sausage is less than $5. Omelettes of all kinds are $5 or less and so are the sandwiches and burgers. Not a region of India, but a little of every kind of regional cooking from that subcontinent. But the fusion does not end there. The menu includes whatever strikes the fancy of the owners, so next to the Vegetable Samosas you'll find Spinach Ravioli and a specialty of the house, a Punjabi Tostada. The seafood here could not be fresher or better prepared. The decor is early waterfront, but, this being Marin, that bric-a-brac is vintage, not second-hand. The food is also deceptive. Seafood platters, batter-fried shrimp and such are the order of the day and though it is the staple bill of fare at seafood places everywhere, here the batter is light and ever so slightly sweet, which makes it a good complement to the fish and shrimp it encases. Moreover, the frying is done to crisp perfection, and the greasiness is virtually nonexistent. There are broiled lobster tails and fish dishes, too, depending on what the day's catch is, as well as a nice Linguine with Clam Sauce, and kid's meals that are a great deal. Even with a renovation, the Cliff House maintains its original charm, but is now 21st century spectacular. Gone are the old fashioned 1900's mahogany/ tar & spar-like decor and fittings, supplanted by brilliant vistas available throughout by the walls upon walls of glass overlooking the rocky precipice to the Pacific. The most striking addition is the ultra-modern Sutro Wing, home of Sutro's, which features seafood and organic produce. The Cliff House Bistro - situated in the original location - offers more traditional fare and it has a beautiful bar. Another addition is the Cliff House To Go, for takeaway orders. Diners should be aware that despite the ultra modern decor, the cuisine at the Cliff House leaves a lot to be desired. Besides being overpriced, most of the fare is tasteless. On Thanksgiving, for example you might order the turkey dinner, and not know whether you were eating turkey, chicken, fish, or ham! Or maybe it is simply cardboard. Don't be put off by the generic lunch counter look of this place. There is a formica counter along one wall and some slightly worn tables and chairs in the back, but the only thing that's important is the succulent Five-spice Roast Chicken, because that is what has been packing in customers for more than 20 years. The chicken hearkens back to Vietnam's days under French rule. The seasoning is traditionally Vietnamese, but the roasting method that produces a juicy bit of poultry. The sauce owes more to classic Gallic cooking methods, hence the name of the establishment. The chicken is served up by an efficient counter staff and comes with rice and a salad that is fresh but not particularly exciting, truth be told.
