Allegro Romano

Plum-colored paradise on Russian Hill
1701 Jones Street
At Broadway

With bright plum-colored walls, dim lighting, and only twelve tables, this is a place that long-established patrons visit regularly for the delicious dishes and captivating view. Start with Bruschetta alla Toscana, made with slices of toasted Italiana bread topped with garlic and tomato, or try the Carpaccio, paper-thin slices of raw filet mignon with a hint of parmesan, fresh basil, capers, olive oil and lemon. The Gnocchi ai Quatro Formaggi is heaven served in cheese. The homemade tiny Potato Dumplings, served in a four-cheese sauce, are tiny puffs of flavor clouds that melt in your mouth. The meat entrees are just as desirable. Scotta Dita is a wonderful sliced rack of lamb grilled Roman-style and fit for a king or emperor - so is the service.

The view from this venerable eatery is one of the best in the Bay Area. The food is American with a French accent. Succulent Roast Chicken is always on the menu as is a Filet Mignon cooked to order and some lovely pasta dishes. The menu, like many in the area, changes with the seasons, but the quality is constant. The dining area has high ceilings and huge windows that take advantage of the vista that includes The City and the Bay. The wait staff is personable and efficient. The wine list is good with California vintages being the order of the day along with some select imports from France.

This Inner Sunset neighborhood co-op, affiliated with Berkeley's Cheese Board, just may ruin you for any other bakery. They bake a wide range of breads, with a whole list of specials every day (grab a loaf of the Irish Soda Bread on Tuesdays). They turn out specialty scones and muffins all baked with tender loving care. Their cookies are at once familiar and surprisingly new (try Auntie Mabel's Cookie Brittle or the moist and crumbly Apricot-Almond). Kids love the crispy/cheesy bread sticks. If it's more than just a snack you're looking for, join the throngs filing in from the far reaches of the city for a slice or four of Arizmendi's famous pizza. They top each one with the freshest of locally raised veggies and the creamiest of specialty cheeses. Eat yours at one of two tables inside, on the benches out front, or in Golden Gate Park just a block away. See website for complete list of weekly bread, scone, muffin and cookie specials, as well as a mission statement and a comprehensive pizza calendar.

However you choose to express it, romance is in the air and on everyone's mind at this quaint, intimate bistro located at the base of Nob Hill. In local polls, it often wins the "Most Romantic" title. There is always something by Mozart playing in the background and the food verges on sinful. Nearly every entree is cooked in cream or butter. Start your meal with Pate de Campagne or Mussels Baked in Butter. Entree choices include Tiger Prawns, Filet Mignon and Chicken Dijonnaise. Prices are not low. Dinner for two, served impeccably, can easily top $80. But twosomes worldwide seem to find it worth the price.

The brickwork interior is more re-claimed factory than upscale eatery catering to the local yuppies and business travelers, but the views of San Francisco Bay are divine and so is the food. The sushi bar, which serves classic offerings with nary a whiff of fusion cuisine, is suitably Asian in design. Menu items in the dining area, though, are a novel and delicious mix of East and West. The kitchy erstatz Victoriana that took the '70s by storm went upscale with this chain. The only Northern California branch occupies the top floor of Macy's Union Square location. Among the polished brass fixtures, marble-topped almost everything and the sinuous mouth-blown glass lamps of this operation, ladies who lunch, tourist families, and locals negotiate a voluminous menu. Choose from crisp salads, tasty burgers, nicely done pasta dishes, fried chicken and, of course, cheesecake. It can get very hectic at peak hours, but the service is good and the experience rewarding all around.

Cliff House

Great Locale, So So Food
1090 Point Lobos
San Francisco, CA 94121
United States
+1 415 386 3330
http://www.cliffhouse.com
The Cliff House, where San Francisco begins, has always been a quaint and utterly charming stop off point for San Francisco visitors. Even with a renovation, the Cliff House maintains its original charm, but is now 21st century spectacular. Gone are the old fashioned 1900's mahogany/ tar & spar-like decor and fittings, supplanted by brilliant vistas available throughout by the walls upon walls of glass overlooking the rocky precipice to the Pacific. The most striking addition is the ultra-modern Sutro Wing, home of Sutro's, which features seafood and organic produce. The Cliff House Bistro - situated in the original location - offers more traditional fare and it has a beautiful bar. Another addition is the Cliff House To Go, for takeaway orders. Diners should be aware that despite the ultra modern decor, the cuisine at the Cliff House leaves a lot to be desired. Besides being overpriced, most of the fare is tasteless. On Thanksgiving, for example you might order the turkey dinner, and not know whether you were eating turkey, chicken, fish, or ham! Or maybe it is simply cardboard. If the Cliff House is on your itinerary -- and it should be -- make the most of the tremendous ocean vistas, but steer clear of the food.

In the heart of the Outer Mission District, where Valencia dead ends into Mission Street, lies a hidden gem. While the Taqueria Can-Cun outpost across the way has garnered more accolades, El Patio is an exceedingly pleasant place for a home-cooked meal. Unlike its burrito-centric neighbors, this establishment offers full sit-down service, and heaping plates of Salvadoran and Mexican specialties. Sun streams in through the windows and skylights, providing ample reason to sit around drinking imported beer (such as Suprema or Regia), enjoying the sights and sounds of the bustling intersection out front -- and perhaps chowing down on a few plates of pupusas or a hot lengua entree.

The huge sign outside this place is more yellow than gold, but the food inside is a treasure just the same. It occupies two floors with picture windows and a killer view of The City to enjoy while you dine on terrific Chinese food at prices that are reasonable anywhere, but especially so for Chinatown. For lunch, there is some menu service, but the real attraction is the dim sum served from the usual rolling carts, notable only because some have grills to keep those pot stickers warm while the staff makes the circuit of the bustling dining rooms. From the menu, try the Pepper Steak for a flavorful blend of peppers and tender beef. From the carts, let your eyes be your guide. Everything is good, especially the barbecued pork items. The service is fast and efficient, though it can be a little brusque at times.

The building housing this upscale restaurant has a wealth of history to enrich the fine dining experience to be found here. Built in 1898, it is still replete with the elegance of that bygone age with its rich redwood paneling, mural on the ceiling and ornate decorative motifs. It almost distracts from the spectacular view of San Francisco and the Bay. Its many incarnations include a cool jazz club frequented by Hendrix and Joplin in the '60s when it was known as The Trident. The atmosphere is far more sedate today with contemporary California cuisine such as the delectable Calamari appetizer served up by an efficient wait staff. Mâche Salad with walnuts, dressing, and feta cheese, Seared Tuna with Bleu des Basque sauce, Spanish Tortilla with baby spinach and goat cheese are some of the dishes you can try. This is a prime location in Jack London Square providing dining in an elegant atmosphere. It is best loved for dishes like Smoked Top Sirloin and Chili-Rubbed Smoked Prawns and Spit-Roasted Prime Rib and Salmon. For a delightful brunch, go for a Bloody Mary and such dishes as Smoked Salmon Benedict and Stuffed French Toast with Peaches and Cream. The service is terrific. There is an excellent wine list featuring California and imported wines. Set in one of Oaklands historic landmarks, it's a romantic place to dine with an elegantly appointed dining room and a first-class view of the Bay. It's also great for sitting at the full bar, drinking classic cocktails, and eating unforgettable appetizers, such as Tender marinated Tenderloin and Southwestern calamari.

At this East Bay beer and pizza joint, located in Oakland's Temescal neighborhood, patrons feast on thin and crispy slices while watching the hustle and bustle of Telegraph Avenue right outside. The pies here are strictly New York style (some with names like "Herbivore" and "Garbage Pie"), and regulars will attest that Lanesplitter does it right. Plenty of tables and a ton of barstools mean there's almost always a spot for you. Six-foot picture windows all the way around the space afford diners a panoramic view and plenty of sunshine on a lazy afternoon. Round out your meal with a value-priced pitcher of one of the more than a dozen locally produced microbrews (including Anchor Brewing's Liberty Ale, a favorite among regulars). Okay, do not go here for the food. It is not bad, but it is not great either, with serviceable omelettes, burgers, sandwiches, and red (not white!) clam chowder. Do not go here for the decor, which borders dangerously on early 60s in alarming shades of orange, harvest gold, and avocado. We go to this place because of the view, the friendly service and the low prices, in that order. Located just up the road from The Cliff House, it perches on a cliffside that overlooks the Pacific Ocean and Seal Rock to the west and the ruins of the Sutro Baths with a glimpse of the Marin Headlands to the north. Counter service if you must, but get a table by the picture window where you can and marvel at the wonder of the conjunction of sea and sky.

The food here is delicious, but the view (180 degrees to be exact) of San Francisco Bay is astounding. On clear warm nights, the view gets even better when the ceiling of the glass-enclosed establishment is rolled back for romantic dining under the stars. That California Cuisine-style dining includes quail roasted to succulent perfection and the catch of the day cooked to order. For dessert, the Creme Brulee Sampler of Vanilla, Almond and Espresso is rich and decadently delicious. For the Sunday brunch that draws couples and families from all over Marin, a buffet stretches seemingly forever with more than 30 items from which to choose as you sip champagne and watch the sun play on the water. The service is impeccable and the wine list has won several awards, including one from the Wine Spectator for excellence.

What began as a roadhouse with a less than savory reputation has become a local upscale favorite while retaining a bygone flavor with its vintage decor. There is also the ghost that is said to haunt the place, which adds a uniquely supernatural note, although there are no guarantees that she will appear. What will appear is great food served up by a friendly staff that knows both the daily specials and the history of the place and is happy to explain both to you. The seafood here is always fresh and grilled over mesquite for a Southwestern flavor. You can also get prime rib, steaks and great crispy salads. The decor is typical bed-and-breakfast quaint, not surprising considering that that is this place's other business concern. Breakfast includes eggs in a variety of styles, pancakes and fresh fruit. Lunch and dinner get a little fancier with warm spinach salads, braised beef shanks with black beans, and pasta dishes that change daily but are all flavorful. Rosamunde is beloved by all. From bike messengers and bar flys, to hip-hoppers, construction workers, and neighborhood moms with babes in arms, the expertly assembled sausage sandwiches here are undeniable. First, the sausages themselves: popular choices include Chicken & Cherries, Wild Boar, Smoked Lamb, and Beer Sausage. Traditional favorites are well-represented as well, from Bratwurst to Weisswurst and Hungarian. If your philosophy is 'the spicier the better,' try the Merguez. Each sausage comes on a toasty-hot, freshly-baked bun, and with your choice of grilled or fresh onion, sauerkraut, chili, pickle relish, hot or sweet peppers, and an assortment of mustards and ketchups. Rosamunde's German-style potato salad puts other potato salads to shame, so grab a tub. Enjoy your meal at one of the counters facing the hustle and bustle of the Lower Haight, or bring it all next door to Toronado for a beer.

The view of San Francisco from this funky little cafe is worth checking out. It features a courtyard with a fountain that lets you take in the sun on a non-foggy San Francisco day. The best part of this dining experience, though, is the chance to join the intense, Bohemian art crowd from the Institute as they discuss technique or sketch quietly over a half-eaten black bean stew. The food itself may be cheap, but it is good, whether bacon, eggs, and hash browns for breakfast or as authentic a plate of red beans and rice as you will find this side of New Orleans. Do not pass up the baked goods, made onsite and worth the calories. Service is not this place's strong point, but think of it as performance art and enjoy the view.

The pies here are strictly New York style, and regulars (many from back east) will attest that Za does it right. Three tables and a handful of stools at the counter make the place cozy, but mean you may have to wait a bit on a busy Friday night. On the TV: Golden State Warriors basketball. On the walls: a rotating collection of locally produced artwork. On tap: six locally produced micro brews (including Anchor Brewing's Liberty Ale, perfect for washing down a spicy slice of pepperoni). See website for menu.
