Rustic cooking |
1550 Hyde Street (at Pacific) San Francisco, CA 94109 United States +1 415 775 1550 http://home.earthlink.net/~zoo... |
This cafe-bar on Hyde Street puts the emphasis on cafe. Serving mediocre food at four-star prices, you may leave with something to be desired. With only 12 tables and bare walls, it is rather small and drab. The "wine bar" is almost non existent, and the wine list is too short for this to be considered a legitimate wine bar. If you want to pay these prices, check out one of the other fabulous restaurants down the street. It is money much better spent! Review © 2007, Wcities |

Good Food Slow, Slow Service |
563 2nd Street (Btwn Brannan & Bryant) San Francisco, CA 94107-1411 United States +1 415 369 0900 http://www.21st-amendment.com |
Let it be said that 21st Amendment has good food, reasonable prices and a generally friendly atmosphere. However, it must also be said, that the service in this SOMA joint is absolutely as slow as Moses using a walker. Stop by here if you like, get a cocktail and chill with your buds. But just be certain you are not on any kind of schedule, since it will take literally forever to get served any kind of food. Specialities include the classic '21 A Burgers' that are made with Niman Ranch beef and served with hearty fries. In short, 21st Amendment is the right spot for an after-work drink, a satisfying lunch or cozy dinner, so long as you are not on the clock. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The recipient of numerous awards since their opening in 2002,including their recent inclusion in the Guardian's "Best of the Bay 2007" awards, A la Turka pairs casual elegance with impeccably prepared plates of Turkisk and modernized Ottoman cuisine. There's little need for pretension with this extensive menu, and they manage to maintain moderate prices while using high quality, all natural ingredients (and extra virgin olive oil exclusively.) Reserve their banquet room for private and business parties. Live music and belly dancing performances are also available, for extra special occasions. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Diners can hand-pick their fish dinner at this Fisherman's Wharf restaurant. The restaurant boasts both a 160-gallon abalone tank and a 1,000-gallon crab and lobster tank. A century-old restaurant that has been passed through the generations of one family, this restaurant offers a brilliant view of the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz. The menu is offered in nine languages and most of the waiters, who offer quick and friendly service, are (at least) bilingual. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Killer cocktailing |
398 Hayes Street (at the corner of Gough Street) San Francisco, CA 94102 United States +1 415 551 1590 http://www.absinthe.com/ |
While the mythical and much-hyped liqueur after which this establishment is named is not served here, many equally potent concoctions are. Specialty drinks, such as the Perfect Pear and the Ginger Rogers, seem to contain pure alcohol, and even a standard margarita packs an unbelievable wallop. If you're looking for something to help mitigate the effects of a strong drink, forget the standard peanuts in an ashtray - Absinthe's bar snacks include bread with a smooth fig spread, croque monsieur, and more. Now, don't forget that Absinthe also functions as a sit-down dining establishment, and their contemporary fare is some of San Francisco's finest. The menu changes daily, but any antipasto platter of cured meats is sure to please, as will the particularly rich duck confit. You can enjoy your meal in the main room or at a cafe-style table on the sidewalk, but if you're looking for a quieter spot, book a table in the private dining room, which even has its own entrance. Notes: The bar is open until 2a F & Sa. See website for details regarding valet parking, brunch, and "Flight Nights." Review © 2007, Wcities |

This is the only Istrian restaurant on the West Coast, making it a one-of-a-kind experience. Istrian cuisine is Italian food that is heavily influenced by flavors from the eastern region of Europe. It features seasonings such as cumin, paprika, pepper, cinnamon, saffron, and nutmeg. Owner/chef Bruno Viscovi has exported recipes from his homeland and his mother's kitchen to bring us wonderful dishes to savor. He prepares three different varieties of Risotto, one featuring portobello mushrooms, one saffron and smoked prosciutto, and one with seafood and mussels. To make the experience even more authentic, a regular change of wines are used to enhance his dishes. The exterior may be windowless, but inside it is warm and inviting. Review © 2007, Wcities |

With bright plum-colored walls, dim lighting, and only twelve tables, this is a place that long-established patrons visit regularly for the delicious dishes and captivating view. Start with Bruschetta alla Toscana, made with slices of toasted Italiana bread topped with garlic and tomato, or try the Carpaccio, paper-thin slices of raw filet mignon with a hint of parmesan, fresh basil, capers, olive oil and lemon. The Gnocchi ai Quatro Formaggi is heaven served in cheese. The homemade tiny Potato Dumplings, served in a four-cheese sauce, are tiny puffs of flavor clouds that melt in your mouth. The meat entrees are just as desirable. Scotta Dita is a wonderful sliced rack of lamb grilled Roman-style and fit for a king or emperor - so is the service. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This chrome and cream eatery does a south-of France take on typical cafe fare with flair. The Bacon-Cheese Sandwich is sparked with crispy pear slices and mustard, with just a hint of horse-radish. The salads favor fava beans and salty, pungent cornichons. If you want to eat on the premises, there is a counter where you stand while digging in. You will not be able to tell if the person serving you is a man or a woman. Welcome to the land of gender illusionists. It is essential to start off your experience here with one of their signature alcoholic drinks named after the ladies of Asia SF. And while the food here is not initially the main attraction, the menu offers great dishes that surprise with their creativity and balance. Start with an "Asia-dilla" - jack cheese, smoked duck and sun dried cherries in a grilled tortilla. Then for an impressive main course dish, try the Miso Glazed King Salmon on a bed of black rice and a tomato-edamame salad; this dish is delectable and surprisingly cohesive. After you eat, continue your night in the club, where DJs spin R&B/funk, house, as well as salsa and merengue. Cover: varies with event. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The affordability factor attracts a mixed clientele. This eatery offers a long menu with over 50 dishes including tons of meat and vegetarian dishes, as well as salads, appetizers, soups and noodles. Play it safe with simple dishes like Marinated Chicken Filets sauteed in butter and garlic. For something more adventurous, try the roasted chicken stuffed with sweet rice, chicken, ground pork, mushrooms and onions or the Thai-style Beef Curry with coconut milk. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This tiny, nondescript spot has a huge neighborhood following. The menu is not adventurous, but the standard Thai fare is well prepared and served up by the efficient wait staff in large portions. Roast chicken here is succulent, the fried fish cakes are flavorful, especially with the tart dipping sauce and wonderful curries (mild or hot) are also available. You will also find hearty soups with a chili bite along with the beef, chicken, seafood or veggies as well as a nice variation on Pad Thai and the other noodle dishes. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This restaurant embodies the classic, understated yet sophisticated tastes of its clientele. Large windows invite people into cool, sage green and cream-colored walls. Framed pictures from the old country hang on the walls while a red velvet runner floats in the air above. It prepares fresh homemade pasta daily and incorporates exotic flavors. Linguine Nere, which is homemade squid ink linguine with mussels, clams, calamari and shrimp in a white wine sauce, while Zucca e Funghi is homemade pumpkin dumplings prepared with shiitake mushrooms in a gorgonzola cream sauce. Reasonably priced appetizers, Popletti di Granchio, Italian-styled Dungeness Crab cake on top of mixed greens and an affordable selection of Italian and Californian wines. The service is excellent. With it vintage decor, this place looks like one of San Francisco's longtime traditions, a la Tadich's Grill, but it is only a little more than a decade old. Still, it draws the same Old Guard clientele to its wood-paneled dining room. The food is California Cuisine chic with house-made pastas, hearty hamburgers, thick steaks cooked to order, fresh fish, and polentas with a variety of delectable sauces. Every night here has a different theme from Monday Night Football to the Friday night karaoke. Free hot dogs during football games will sweeten your stay. It features typical sports decor, with neon beer signs, raised televisions, and cushioned bar stools. The green checkerboard floor, natural sunlight, and the occasional hint of shrubbery raise it from dive standing. During the work week neighborhood workers munch on greasy hamburgers and enjoy cold draft beer. It also serves satisfying plates of hamburgers and fries, nachos, fried chicken, and cheesesteak sandwiches. The favorite house cocktails are New Orleans-style Hurricanes and Cyclones. And who, you might well ask, are those four referred to in the name of this award-winning restaurant? Those would be C.P. Huntington, Charles Crocker, Leland Stanford and Mark Hopkins, whose mansions made Nob Hill the literal and figurative pinnacle of San Francisco style in the days before the 1906 earthquake and fire. Amid the leather banquettes and potted palms that add a cachet of old money, award-winning Executive Chef Gloria Ciccarone-Nehls creates a menu that includes such eclectic offerings as Venison and Black Bean Chili with Crisp Honey-Spiced Onions, as well as nightly low-fat and vegetarian specials. Four locations in the city explain Burger Bistro's popularity. It serves American cuisine on all days of the week and has a heavy flow of customers. As you may have guessed from the name, the hamburgers here are a favorite, though there are other items on the menu too. Since burgers may not do it for some people, the place also offers fresh salads as well as sandwiches to name a few. Though it may sound like a fast-food joint, they do provide seating. This is a refreshingly quiet little bistro that captures the charm of the French version, but none of the pretension that can accompany the importation. Vintage bistro tables and chairs add to the charm as does the marble-topped bar for the business types and Francophiles who make this place popular. The wait staff is brisk but personable whether explaining the long list of daily specials or whisking your steak fries to your table. The menu reflects what is seasonal, but usually includes hearty and flavorful Beouf Burguignonne and exquisitely grilled fresh fish. The wine list has an excellent selection of French wines. This tiny storefront does a remarkable impression of an authentic London pub. It might not have the seasoned wood paneling of the Old World version, but it does have a lived-in charm and a good chunk of SF's ex-pat Brit population downing pints of Guinness and plates of bangers and mash. You can also have game of darts while keeping up with the latest soccer match on the bar's television. These donuts are made from scratch, not a pre-packaged mix that has been sitting around for who knows how long. They are light, never greasy, and while they will never be confused with health food, they are undeniably a comfort food par excellence. They are also always fresh. A place this popular with people from all walks of life never has a donut on hand long enough to even think of getting stale. It is not fine dining, as the sometimes brusque counter help makes clear, as does the '50s decor complete with tacky with fake wood paneling. Concentrate on the huge Cinnamon Rolls or the glazed raised, though, and you will be fine. Review © 2007, Wcities |

After work, it is a great place to sit at the bar, drink margaritas, and share a plate of the house special, Supreme Nachos. It serves deli sandwiches with a side salad. Beyond the deli, the menu features the traditional Mexican fare like Tacos, Burritos, Quesadillas, Fajitas, and Huevos Rancheros. Chimichangas and Crab Enchiladas are a couple of the house specialities. The margaritas are locally famous. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A San Francisco tradition |
Vlaamse Kaai 76 (Macy's Union Square) San Francisco, CA 2000 United States +1 415 296 4740 |
It was during the Gold Rush that French immigrant and bread maker Isadore Boudin first hit on his recipe for sourdough bread that earned him a place in San Francisco history. The baking method hasn't changed in all that time. Other sourdough bakeries have come and some have gone, but for many native San Franciscans, this is the only sourdough that matters. The company expanded into the restaurant business a few years back where, in a casual setting, you can get either good clam chowder or a huge salad in a bowl made from their signature sourdough. Sandwiches, pizza, and a selection of bakery dessert treats are also on the menu. This is a great place for a quick lunch. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Baked just right |
850 Grant Avenue (between Clay and Washington streets) San Francisco, CA 94108 United States +1 415 362 0601 |
It is not fancy. As a matter of fact, it is something of a dive, but it is clean and the wait staff is efficient negotiating the crowd of locals and tourists who crowd the generic tables and chairs. Clay pot cooking is what brings the folks in. Flavorful dishes are slow cooked in that traditional Chinese way that brings out the best in vegetables, seafood, beef, chicken and lamb. There are non-clay pot dishes here, including a nourishing and hearty noodle soups, but those can wait. The clay pot cooking does not get any better than right here. Only cash is accepted. Great Hunan |
217 Columbus Avenue San Francisco, CA 94133 United States +1 415 788 7527 http://www.brandyhos.com |
This North Beach favorite repeatedly gets voted "Best Chinese" by local publications and patrons. Owner Brandy Ho is also somewhat of a celebrity who was once featured in Time magazine as a successful first-generation immigrant. Enjoy your meal in a festive, casual atmosphere amid interesting architectural details, a bewitching Asian-inspired decor and plenty of other customers who crowd in for lunch or dinner. The recipe for the Brandy Ho success story lies in authentic Hunan recipes. The hot and spicy fresh meats and vegetables are healthful as well as delicious. The daily specials (prices vary) are always a treat as is the friendly service. Review © 2007, Wcities |

There is no sign announcing this place, so be on the lookout for the overflowing planter boxes. These colorful flowers flank ornate doors of carved wood and glass. Inside, a quiet bar and private tables await, as well as a friendly welcome and great service. The menu highlights traditional Italian favorites such as Scampi and Veal Picatta and cocktails mixed to perfection. Food, as well as drink, is served into the wee hours. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The brick walls, paintings, and decor make Brindisi, an Italian restaurant a hip and modern feel. Both friendly and romantic, it is a superb spot for meeting a friend, date or business client. Extra tender fried Calamari is a favorite dish as well as the rich dark chocolate desserts. Dine inside or outside on quaint patio tables, along Belden Place. 1950s panache |
855 Howard Street San Francisco, CA 94103 United States +1 415 543 7673 http://www.bucadibeppo.com/ |
The enormous neon sign shows Chianti ebulliently spilling into an oversized glass. Its 1950s flavor applies to the decor inside, too. Italian and Italian-American pop culture artifacts are scattered everywhere. Note the so-called Pope's table, featuring a bust of John Paul II. The food is hearty and served family-style in enormous portions to local professionals, students and tourists. There is nothing gourmet per se on the menu, but the Spaghetti, Ravioli, Lasagna, Scampi and various incarnations of Parmagiana (veal, eggplant, chicken) are made with care and are delicious. The wine list has a few Chiantis. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Angus beef |
101 Fourth Street (Sony Metreon, at the corner of Fourth and Mission streets) San Francisco, CA 94103 United States +1 415 369 6150 |
After checking out the latest Sony electronics or enjoying the latest movie, the Sony Metreon crowd comes here for all-American steak dinners at low prices. For lunch or dinner, this place offers more beef for your buck. This steak house can be found between Firewood (Italian) and the Long Life Noodle Company. Place your order at the register and the grab a seat in the Buckhorn or sit in a common dining area. The atmosphere is casual, filled with families, shoppers and the after-movie crowds. The menu is relatively simple, filled with char-roasted sirloin staples like the 6 oz. Steak Dinner Platter and thinly sliced Steak Sandwiches made with certified Angus Beef. If red meat is not your thing, try the Char-broiled Chicken or Salmon. Side dishes include dinner rolls, French fries, garden salad, and caramelized onions. The service is quick. Quick burgers |
101 Spear Street San Francisco, CA 94102 United States +1 415 777 9200 |
An unassuming hamburger joint this may be, but the burgers are terrific, made from quality cuts of lean beef, cooked to order and then slathered with onions that are fried to just this side of caramelized. The patrons are Financial District types and other assorted office workers grabbing a quick bite for lunch. It is the same crowd at breakfast, though the offerings of eggs and hash browns while still well-priced are not quite as tasty as the burgers. The owner is friendly, but usually too busy to chat while giving great service to the crowds his food attracts. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Discover Burma |
720 Post Street San Francisco, CA 94109 United States +1 415 775 1156 |
This unpretentious little place, done up with the usual Asian-style prints on the wall, is a great and inexpensive spot to discover Burmese cuisine. If you are already familiar with it, its prices alone make it worth a visit. On the whole, the food is spicy with a sweetness to it that is warm and satisfying. For something cooler, try the Mango Salad with Chiles, Fried Onions, and Ripe and Green Mango Slices for an unusual but delicious appetizer. It is sometimes hard to get the waiter's attention, but it is worth the effort. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A neighborhood favorite for hot pizza and cold beer, this pizzeria makes tasty pies, city-style. The atmosphere is a bit more urban and modern than the typical wooden-bench and table decor found in traditional pizzerias. Enjoy the great food here or stay home and have your pizza delivered. It offers yummy hot sandwiches and pizzas with all the traditional toppings plus gourmet extras like garlic, baby clams, feta cheese, cilantro, Mexican beef, eggplant, spinach, and more. One of the awesome signature pizza combinations is the Eggplant Special with eggplant, fresh basil, onions and bell peppers. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Housed near Japantown, Bushi-Tei provides an excellent opportunity to enjoy the area's finer cuisine. With the excellent chef Waka at the helm, your dining experience will not disapoint. For a sampling of the menu, try chef Waka's Omakase, an exquisite 3-course tasting menu with wine-pairing. The Tender Loin of Kobe Beef, cooked to delicate perfection, is a sure favorite. The Grilled Chilean Sea Bass, served with baby bokchoy, pignoli, ginger-tamari and lime oil, is also quite the crowd-pleaser. Desserts are a high point: try the Roquefort, which is a roasted black mission fig with vanilla bean oil, and you will leave elated. Don't forget to pay a visit to the restrooms, they're Japanese technology at its finest! Review © 2007, Wcities |

Owner and Chef Daniel Patterson's culinary masterpieces and the Zen-like atmosphere have made Coi a favorite—with those who can afford it, of course! Clean, refined interiors in muted colors, simple artwork and subtle background music create a relaxed ambience. If the dining room gets too crowded, fear not; you can sit in the casual lounge. Diners can opt for a four- or ten-course meal of French-Californian fusion cuisine. Try favorites like the Suckling Pig, Carrot Soup and the Beet Carpaccio; note though, that the menus are subject to change. This old-fashioned Italian restaurant with the motto 'Where the Italians eat' is a North Beach institution. Since 1956, this family friendly establishment has been serving traditional cuisine like homemade ravioli, Veal Parmesan, steak and pork chops. Not much has changed here since the 50s. You will enjoy an old-fashioned meal in an old-fashioned atmosphere. For dessert both the Tiramisu and the Cheesecake is divine. Review © 2007, Wcities |
