Bi-Rite Creamery

Where Sweet Hits the Spot
3692 18th Street
San Francisco, CA 94110
United States
+1 415 626 5600
http://www.biritecreamery.com/...
Offering a wide range of flavors the Bi-Rite Creamery and Bakeshop's menu uses only organic and local goods. Along with the staples (Chocolate, Vanilla, Mint Chip), Bi-Rite offers an ecclectic mix of seasonal scoops like Honey Lavender, Salted Caramel, and Tangerine. Whether seated at the wooden bar inside the tiny shop or lounging below the palm trees outside, the Bi-Rite Creamery is a great place to taste a variety of sweets.

Bombay Ice Cream

Saffron ice cream (!) and snacks
552 Valencia
(between 16th and 17th streets)
San Francisco, CA 94114
United States
+1 415 861 3995
http://www.bombayicecream.com
This is the only place in town where you can get a fig, saffron or soft pink rose ice cream in a waffle cone. Reason enough to stop in, and the only reason many of the Roxie Theater crowd do, but this unique purveyor or ice cream also offers chaat (snacks). Great when you are in a hurry, these are tasty potato, lentil and garbanzo-stuffed dumplings and other fried treats. The food is satisying and really, really cheap.

Ciao Bella Gelato Company

Possibly San Francisco's best gelato
2211 Quesada Avenue
San Francisco, CA 94124
United States
+1 415 824 8690
http://www.ciaobellagelato.com
This is believed by many to be the best gelato made in San Francisco, hands down. The colors, the textures, the flavors, if you have not tasted Italy's national ice cream, you are missing out. This place is a small and simple ice cream cafe in the SoMa neighborhood. You are in, then you are out. This local company acts as West Coast distributor for a New York based company, treating Californians to more than 70 kinds of fresh gelato and sorbet. Unique flavors include the Jack Daniel's butter pecan, caramel, hazelnut biscotti gelato, blackberry cabernet, grapefruit Campari, and apricot Chardonnay sorbet. Buy it by the cone, pint or the 2 1/2 quart container ($12-$16). It also serves gelato and sorbet based smoothies, espresso drinks and Italian sandwiches.

Ghirardelli Chocolate Shop

The original San Francisco chocolate
42 Stockton Street
San Francisco, CA 94108
United States
+1 415 397 3030
http://www.ghirardelli.com/
This is the San Francisco institution that sells premium chocolates and builds a mean ice-cream sundae. Taste rich candy bars in milk, dark, cookies and cream, and mint chocolate. Baskets filled with fudge sauces, cocoa mixes, English toffee, and pecan caramel clusters make great souvenirs for chocolate lovers. Be sure to try the signature Twin Peaks Sundae, a scoop of chocolate and a scoop of vanilla slathered with some of the finest fudge sauce anywhere and wearing a dense halo real whipped cream 'fog'.

Joe's Ice Cream

Old-fashioned ice cream
5351 Geary Boulevard
At 18th avenue
San Francisco, CA 94121
United States
+1 415 751 1950
http://www.joesicecream.com/
Since 1959 this old-fashioned soda fountain has been serving homemade ice cream and all-American grill items. It only makes the classics, things such as hamburgers, hotdogs, and milkshakes. Sit at the retro ice cream counter and enjoy thick chocolate malts and banana splits, '50s style. The atmosphere has not changed much since Joe's opened way back when. Unique ice cream flavors that reflect the neighborhood include azuki bean, green tea, and Irish coffee, but fear not, it also makes all the usual flavors like chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry. The service is terrific.

MaggieMudd

Worth Going Vegan For
903 Courtland Avenue
(between Folsom and Gates Streets)
San Francisco, CA 94110
United States
+1 415 641 5291
http://www.maggiemudd.com/
Who would have known that it could taste better Vegan? Sure it's hard to believe, but many vegans and non-vegans swear that there is just something about MaggieMudd. Situated in Bernal Heights, it's not exactly close to everything, nor is it a place that you want to walk to alone late at night. For this reason it's a great place to go with friends. They serve sundaes, cones, drinks, and cakes. Make sure to try anything chocolate on the menu, you may just think the vegans do it better.

Marco Polo

Italian ice cream with an Asian flair
1447 Taraval Street
San Francisco, CA 94122
United States
+1 415 731 2833
This ice cream parlour combines the best of Italy and China. The result: Italian gelato with spicy Chinese flavors. It's definitely worth the trek to this establishment. Neighborhood teenagers bop to the overhead Chinese pop music and visit with their friends. The atmosphere is funky, fun and loud. Musky mango, lychee, and java fruit are a few of the unusual flavors offered. For the less adventurous there are a few traditional options including raisin rum and vanilla. Prices range from $4-6.

Murata's Cafe Hana

Asian influenced coffee bar
1737 Post Street
(Japan Center, Second Floor, between Laguna and Webster streets)
San Francisco, CA 94115
United States
+1 415 567 9133
The mint walls and stylized exposed beams of this sleek, ultramodern cafe conjure up sophisticated downtown Tokyo. It serves up pastries, truffles, coffee, and tea. The chai is especially good and comes in three varieties: green tea, vanilla, and tiger spice (that last has quite a kick to it). For an unusual taste treat, try the Geisha Float, made of green-tea ice cream and topped with sweet adzuki bean paste, or a Mochi Freeze, an ice-cream sundae topped with mochi (sweet rice paste). Seating is under skylights at tables in space age shapes standing next to a faux bamboo waterfall.

St. Francis Fountain and Candy Store

Dine in a time warp
2801 24th Street
(At York Street)
San Francisco, CA 94110
United States
+1 415 826 4200
It does not get more authentic than this classic soda fountain that dates back to 1918. The place was last remodeled with linoleum floors and cozy booths right after WWII, and the Christakes family, which has owned it from the beginning, has not seen a need to change anything since. It is a place where teenyboppers swooned over Frank Sinatra while sipping the same strawberry sodas you can order up today. Virtually everything on the menu is made in-house and from scratch, including the mayonnaise on the egg salad sandwiches, the ice cream and syrups in the sundaes, and the marshmallows in the heavenly hash. The homemade soups are a local institution with the patrons who range from students new to The City to old-timers who have been coming here since it was (relatively) new.
