42 Degrees

A better latitude
235 16th St
San Francisco, CA 94107
United States
+1 415 777 5558
This place is almost like a big garage, with floor-to-ceiling glass panels that open horizontally to an outdoor courtyard. There are plenty of tables for dining alfresco. The excellent food here is inspired by the 42 degree latitude on which the Mediterranean rests and includes fresh fish, bowls of marinated olives of many varieties, artisan cheese plates, and lots of fresh, crusty bread are served. The wine list is equal to the cuisine, both representing the many countries of this latitude and some evenings, live jazz is performed to complete your cultural immersion.

http://www.albonarestaurant.com/
This is the only Istrian restaurant on the West Coast, making it a one-of-a-kind experience. Istrian cuisine is Italian food that is heavily influenced by flavors from the eastern region of Europe. It features seasonings such as cumin, paprika, pepper, cinnamon, saffron, and nutmeg. Owner/chef Bruno Viscovi has exported recipes from his homeland and his mother's kitchen to bring us wonderful dishes to savor. He prepares three different varieties of Risotto, one featuring portobello mushrooms, one saffron and smoked prosciutto, and one with seafood and mussels. To make the experience even more authentic, a regular change of wines are used to enhance his dishes. The exterior may be windowless, but inside it is warm and inviting.

Fisherman Wharf's oldest restaurant began as a crab stand in 1920 serving seafood cocktails out of a paper cup. Today it is a successful fine seafood restaurant specializing in traditional Sicilian recipes. Sitting right on the water, it offers one of the best views of the Bay. The upstairs dining room offers an old-world charm and an award-winning wine list. The downstairs offers favorites that include the homemade seafood sausage, an exclusive Crab Cioppino and a rich Seafood Risotto. The Oysteria serves seafood cocktails, pizza, salads, soups and sandwiches. The service is great.

With bright plum-colored walls, dim lighting, and only twelve tables, this is a place that long-established patrons visit regularly for the delicious dishes and captivating view. Start with Bruschetta alla Toscana, made with slices of toasted Italiana bread topped with garlic and tomato, or try the Carpaccio, paper-thin slices of raw filet mignon with a hint of parmesan, fresh basil, capers, olive oil and lemon. The Gnocchi ai Quatro Formaggi is heaven served in cheese. The homemade tiny Potato Dumplings, served in a four-cheese sauce, are tiny puffs of flavor clouds that melt in your mouth. The meat entrees are just as desirable. Scotta Dita is a wonderful sliced rack of lamb grilled Roman-style and fit for a king or emperor - so is the service.

For traditional, East Coast-style pizza, check out this pizzeria that cooks its pizza in a wood-burning brick oven so the crust comes out crisp, dark, and delicious. Enjoy it inside the traditional pizzeria with its even more traditional red-and-white checked tablecloths, or outside in the outdoor patio area. Pizza pies are named after famous East Coast cities. The Philly, for example, is topped with turkey sausage, sauteed onions and roasted bell peppers. Other popular varieties include the Greek Isle (sun-dried tomatoes, artichoke hearts, feta and mozzarella cheese).

It also happens to be the only restaurant in the region that serves Southern Italian fare but that's not its claim to fame. Delicious food is. The menu is a glimpse into the food habits of local Italians from the exotic (Tagliatelle Nere Con Gamberetti - Black tagliatelle with shrimp in a fresh tomato sauce) to the hearty - Veal with tomatoes, garlic, olive oil and oregano, the offerings are filled with pleasant surprises. All will impress and Angelina will soon be on your favorite restaurants list. They also serve the traditional Sambuca and a house Grappa.

This quaint Potrero Hill establishment is the perfect place for an intimate dinner for two. Come early, the restaurant does not accept reservations and the dinner hour can be crowded. The menu is a sampling of traditional Italian dishes with a twist. Vegetables, salads, and antipasto are offered as appetizers. Lunch and dinner items include a variety of pastas and a few fish and meat choices. The house specialty is the pasta and you will not be dissapointed in any liguini, tortellini or spaghetti dish you chose. The wine list is limited, but certainly respectable for this small restaurant.

This North Beach favorite offers little space, but a lot of great Italian food. The cozy little cafe is very small but possesses the charm of pasta on the ceiling. The staff is welcoming and limited outdoor seating is available. Considering the cafe's size, the menu is surprisingly vast, filled with Southern Italian cuisine. You might try the Penne in a Spicy Tomato and Basil Sauce, the Gnocchi in Gorgonzola, or the Spinach and Cheese Ravioli in the Wild Mushroom Sauce. The wine list is rather extensive, filled with many Italian and California wines (prices vary, but $15 will buy a good bottle). If you prefer a coffee beverage perhaps, there are also lattes, espressos and cappuccinos on the menu.

A bit of authentic North Beach ambiance is what you will find at this unpretentious spot. The decor is classic Italian restaurant, down to the checkered tablecloths, and so is the food which includes carefully prepared spaghetti, ravioli, lasagna as well as Osso Bucco and Scampi that is served up by a quick wait staff to tourists, yuppies and locals who have been coming here for more than twenty years. A substantial breakfast is served all day. The house coffee is made from beans roasted in-house and makes the visit worthwhile by itself. Sip some over an Italian pastry while you watch the passing parade.

This North Beach cafe is named after legendary Italian opera composer Giacomo Puccini (Tosca, Madame Butterfly)who shares the same Italian hometown, Lucca, with the cafe's owner, Graziano Lucchese. The decor reflects the owner's admiration for this great composer and the business cards on the walls reflect local admiration for the cafe. Get food to go, eat inside, or enjoy your meal outside on the cafe's sidewalk seating. It is an affordable spot for a gourmet lunch with specialty sandwiches like Soppressata, a house-style salami. For dessert, the Italian Cheesecake is delicious.

Seafood dishes are the highlights of the menu. So are the pastas, risottos and vegetarian specialties. This local favorite combines Old World charm with all the hip panache one expects from the Mission. The place is dimly lit, with aprons festooning the walls a la great grandma's in Sicilia. When the dj spins on the weekends there is a distinctly San Franciscan vibe to it that really brings the crowds. The specialty here on the handwritten menu is spaghetti and meatballs, wash it down with wine or a 40oz of beer; I suggest the latter. Emmy's is very popular with the spaghetti eating crowd in the Mission and their policy is no reservations. Italian pride is evident in the delicious Italian food that has been served up by the friendly wait staff here for more than 30 years. The upscale crowd is a mix of longtime regulars and people dropping in on their way to or from the neighborhing Oakland Airport or a game at the nearby Coliseum. In addition to the wonderful pastas and soups, you will find great steaks, flavorful seafood entrees, and omelettes. Try the delicately seasoned house special Prawns Parmagiana. The wine list has a nice selection of California and Italian vintages.

That tantalizing aroma of sausages that greets you as you come through the door of this '50s diner isn't coming from just any links. These are the specialty of the house and made on site. There are spicy, sweet, and several other variations, each better than the last. They are found in the bountiful lasagna. You will also find Braised Lamb, Scampi and an excellent selection of pasta dishes, as well as great pizzas to enjoy in one of the cozy booths or on the brick-lined patio. The service is quick, which is good because this place can get very crowded with locals of all ages on weekends. Reservations are strongly recommended.

The food here is reason enough to make a visit, but for those who like a little education with their meal, from December to February you can watch what may become the very olive oil served with your meal made right before your eyes. The cold press is separated from the dining room by a plate glass window and watching olives undergo the hydraulic apotheosis into extra virgin oil is fascinating. The food is also good, with all the usual pasta favorites as well as Eggplant Parmigiana and some fish dishes that change according to the local catch. The service is homey, in keeping with the huge family crowd that this place attracts, and the portions are huge.

This is a casual pizzeria with a sports bar ambiance mainly patronized by the neighborhood. Try the Chinese pizza topped with barbecue pork or the low-calorie pizza chased with a lite beer. Pizzas can be made with a thin crust or stuffed Chicago-style, both with homemade dough that is made fresh daily. Choose from a wide variety of standard topping plus less common toppings like feta cheese, corn, pine nuts, zucchini, baby clams, bay shrimp, avocados, and spinach. The menu highlights pizza but also offers sandwiches, burgers, dinner salads, appetizers, beef and poultry entrees, and plates of pasta. The service is great.

Yes, the chicken is that good. There are several lovely starters. The Carciotie Pepe Rosso is a favorite consisting of a huge platter of fresh artichokes, roasted peppers, basil, toasted pine nuts and gorgonzola cheese. Over 30 years ago, Italian chef Giuseppe DiGrande came to the United States from Italy. He worked at a variety of five-star Italian restaurants before coming to this eatery. Fifteen years after that, this restaurant is cited as having some of the finest Italian food in The City. The name is not just a flight of fancy. On the wall hangs a beautiful gold mirror while the rest of the restaurant is more rustic than ornate. A cozy place to enjoy a meal, the menu is a smattering of fish, chicken, and pasta. Canneloni pasta is the house specialty. Other reccommended items include the Chicken Cacciatore and the Louisiana Jumbo Prawns. In addition, the restaurant boasts a large selection of California wines (prices vary, but a good bottle starts at $10). The service is great.

There is no relation to the film starring William Holden and Barbara Stanwyck, though the no-frills atmosphere is not incompatible with the classic film about boxing. A few tables, a counter and pizza is all you will find here. Italian-speaking locals mix with people from all over who come here for slices or whole pies made with focaccia dough, thick and dripping with olive oil that makes a napkin required with every bite. The toppings are piled just as thick and are similarly, no frills. No goat cheese here, but you will find the classics, such as pepperoni, mushrooms and even pesto!

The peach walls, tile floors and bronze fixtures are more a California interpretation of a Tuscan villa than a reflection of the real thing, but it is still a lovely setting for this authentic Italian food described by Joe himself as hearty peasant fare. He is being modest. Quail with risotto and Maine lobster are a little too upscale to be described that way, but who cares?
