Rustic cooking |
1550 Hyde Street (at Pacific) San Francisco, CA 94109 United States +1 415 775 1550 http://home.earthlink.net/~zoo... |
This cafe-bar on Hyde Street puts the emphasis on cafe. Serving mediocre food at four-star prices, you may leave with something to be desired. With only 12 tables and bare walls, it is rather small and drab. The "wine bar" is almost non existent, and the wine list is too short for this to be considered a legitimate wine bar. If you want to pay these prices, check out one of the other fabulous restaurants down the street. It is money much better spent! Review © 2007, Wcities |

A better latitude |
235 16th St San Francisco, CA 94107 United States +1 415 777 5558 |
This place is almost like a big garage, with floor-to-ceiling glass panels that open horizontally to an outdoor courtyard. There are plenty of tables for dining alfresco. The excellent food here is inspired by the 42 degree latitude on which the Mediterranean rests and includes fresh fish, bowls of marinated olives of many varieties, artisan cheese plates, and lots of fresh, crusty bread are served. The wine list is equal to the cuisine, both representing the many countries of this latitude and some evenings, live jazz is performed to complete your cultural immersion. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This restaurant is a dream come true for owners Alicia Petrakis and Eleni Lolas. After bowling over clients through their catering business, this is their latest offering. The menu is a combination of different kinds of Mediterranean food; from good old fashioned comfort food to foods from different ethnic recipes. Marinated Grilled Pork, Chicken Souvla and Orange Cognac Finished Pork Tenderloin are some of the stars on the menu. Brunch will be an eye opener as well, with Layered Mediterranean Pancakes and the Polenta and Egg stack - a must try. So seize the day and enjoy a meal at this fantastic eatery. Rustic but Elegant |
561 Valencia Street (between 16th & 17th Streets) San Francisco, CA 94110 United States +1 415 487 1600 http://www.tartinebakery.com/b... |
For years, Tartine Bakery has bowled everyone over with mind-bendingly awesome baked goods. Then they set their sights on dinner. They opened Bar Tartine on a hoppin' section of Valencia Street, and fans of rustic-but-elegant cuisine lined up. Every meal starts with a hearty hunk of crusty bread that will make you completely reevaluate your feelings about crusty bread. Enjoy small plates and wines by the glass at the inviting bar, or sit down to a full multi-course feast at a table. The menu changes seasonally, but expect to find nothing but the finest in locally raised meats, seafood and vegetables. The wine selection is excellent, Chimay is on draft, and the desserts (as per the place's pedigree) are jaw dropping. Review © 2007, Wcities |

French Mediterranean Cuisine |

Baraka serves choice French-Mediterranean cuisine. Using only the freshest ingredients and special spices, you can choose from any of their three menus. You can sink your teeth into the Chicken Tagine with preserved lemon and cracked green olives. Or, if you like something a bit heavier, try the Grilled Sirloin steak with Spanish fries and harissa aioli. For something in-between, the Grilled Lamb Chop with roasted eggplant has just enough bite that intensifies the meat's natural flavor. The candle lit decor suggests Morocco, adding to the exotic experience you will have when dining at Baraka. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Great selection |
4124 Geary Boulevard San Francisco, CA 94118 United States +1 415 668 4150 |
If you just cannot decide on a type of cuisine you are in the mood for, then this is the spot for you. Seeing Spanikopita and Tortellini on the same menu offers its own unique charm. This casual eatery, done up in a classic Italian restaurant motif, has Pan-Mediterranean offerings to go with its delightful selection of pizzas. The pizza crust is not too thick, not too thin and you can choose from a variety of toppings to top your pie. In addition, there are pasta dishes done to perfection, steaks cooked to order and even English-style fish and chips. The crowd is mostly locals, students and families. Review © 2007, Wcities |

11, G Street San Francisco, CA 94901 United States +1 415 453 6427 http://www.cafearrivedercirest... |
A relaxed family dining experience is what sets apart this otherwise mediocre place. Family owned and run, the staff is friendly and makes one feel at home. The food is wholesome but somehow lacks authentic Italian flavors. Penne with vodka sauce and seafood fettucini are worth trying. Portions are generous making it a great place for group dining. Good place to go with family and kids. Parties and events may be organized in the private dining rooms. Pre-event food and wine tasting sessions ensure you know what you're gonna get. While Gestalt bar does not serve any hard liquor, its wide beer selection, from Sierra Nevada to PBR to Kronenberg 1664, certainly has its perks. With a laid back vibe that attracts its fair share of San Francisco hipster-fixed gear types, be prepared to enter a mellow atmosphere and listen to German-folk tunes. Sometimes a restaurant's menu is such a mix of different cuisines that it is hard to classify the fusion process in play. Fortunately, a conundrum such as that doesn't diminish the quality of the food served here. The dining area, in a quaint Edwardian storefront, is smallish but brightened considerably by the large windows and the pleasing pale color scheme. The food served by a young but professional wait staff also brightens the ambience. Try Spaghetti Tossed With Baby Artichokes, and Lemony Chicken On A Bed Of Quinoa. The wine list is limited but has a few interesting California vintages. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Rustic and delicious |

Done up like an upscale country house somewhere on the Mediterranean, maybe France, maybe Italy, this casual eatery is a favorite with locals. The menu is seasonal and features items such as hearty lamb stew with root vegetables, succulent roasted chicken spiked with garlic, and both pasta and gnocchi with toppings to please carnivores and vegetarians. The service is quick and friendly from a youngish wait staff that is equally happy to explain the daily specials, items from the menu or the selections offered on the wine list that includes vintages from California and Europe. Large portions, an inventive menu, and generous cuts of meat are all the rage at this exciting Mediterranean restaurant. Located just a block from Union Square, it is a convenient stop after a day of shopping. Regulars are all about the meat, and if you are looking for something new to try, and are craving a bit of Italian with your Gyros, be sure to try the Gyros Calzone. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Mediterranean cuisine and jazz piano |
490 Geary Street (between Mason and Taylor streets) San Francisco, CA 94102 United States +1 415 292 6430 http://warwickhotel-lascene.com/ |
Come here before a show and enjoy Mediterranean cuisine, live jazz music and local art. Oddly, it serves breakfast and dinner, but not lunch. The tasteful dining room is decorated with portraits of theater greats and a grand piano. The inviting bar is festive, full of hotel guests, theater-goers and professionals enjoying an after work drink. The menu changes with the seasons. It may feature Oysters on the Half Shell, Red Wine Braised Lamb Shank, Grilled Pork Loin and Roast Duck Breast. Delectable desserts include White Chocolate Bread Pudding, Vanilla Bean Ice Cream with Fudge Sauce and much more. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Fabulous fusion |
300 Broadway Near Jack London Square San Francisco, CA 94607 United States +1 510 251 8100 http://www.soizicbistro.com/ |
Cafe Pastoral had legions of fans during its run in Berkeley, so when the owners opened this elegant bistro-style spot, there was a fan base in place that keeps it packed. The food is Pacific Rim with Mediterranean overtones and the setting is a fusion, too, of clean Asian lines and carefully chosen pieces of Western art with tapestries mixed with striking contemporary art for a look that is timeless. A seasonal menu changes daily, but a Delicately Smoked Chicken is usually offered along with fresh fish, pastas and light but flavorful house-made desserts. Review © 2007, Wcities |
