Altena Taqueria

Ready when you are
2588 Mission Street
San Francisco, CA 94110-2592
United States
+1 415 641 8415
Mexican posters and do-dads decorate the walls and the furniture here looks like it came from a rummage sale. The food, though, is first rate. It is flavorful, cooked to perfection and available early in the morning or late at night. Burritos, bursting with chicken, beef or veggies, come in a size that could easily feed two. The enormous shrimp cocktails are spiked with lime and spicy salsa. The rest of the menu, which includes enchiladas, rice plates and tacos, is equally good. The service is quick and friendly. Only cash is accepted.

This Haight District shop showcases Americana as represented by the bicycle, and it repeatedly gets voted best bike shop in The City by local publications. The store specializes in antique bicycles that date back as far as the early 1900s. A 1915 Master Bicycle from Sears, restored to its original condition, is an example of the finds that make its way through the shop. It collects and restores vintage balloon tires, roadsters, three speeds and classic-lightweights. The bicycles for sale also include a collection of Schwinn reproduction balloon tire bikes and parts.

Looking much like an old-money hacienda, this neighborhood favorite is rich with imported tile, murals, carved wood and a welcoming fireplace. The food is the usual mix of enchiladas, rice plates, burritos and the like, but made with fresh ingredients in combinations that change with the season. Try the Roast Chicken spiked with lime and traditional spices. Tequila, sangria, Mexican beer, and agua frescas in wonderful flavors such as mango and watermelon are the perfect accompaniment either in the cozy dining area or the lovely patio. The service is fast and friendly.

Situated in a converted adobe church, the food here is a divine experience in its own right. It is an inspired fusion of traditional American favorites and classic Mexican cuisine served by a friendly staff that is informal but efficient. Seared tuna is slathered with lime-tequila butter while sirloin burgers are spiked with jalepeno peppers and there is more than a hint of chili in the barbecued ribs. You might think that this place with its colorful flags, faux adobe paint job and bright red tables on the patio was moved lock, stock and barrel from Mexico itself. The food tastes authentic, too, but the great news here is that it's made without lard and the cooks use cooking techniques that keep the cholesterol down at every stop in the cooking process. The results are delicious and virtually indistinguishable from its more calorie-rich counterparts. The specialty is burritos. Agua fresca and both Mexican and local microbrewery beers are also available from the friendly and quick wait staff.

This may look like a hacienda from California's colonial past, but it is actually an unfussy, elegant place to get delicious Mexican food a la Marin. You will find classic Mexican favorites with Nouvelle Cuisine twist. Chile Rellenos comes with a cream sauce kissed with cinnamon. The grilled chicken salad is topped with a creamy cilantro sauce that complements the crunchy jicama. The service is as gracious as you'd find at a hacienda. This is an upscale roadhouse with vintage posters and Coca Cola signs, hubcaps and headlights aplenty. The building is light and spacious with large windows looking out onto Union Street. Beware the Route 66 Margarita though, it is so strong that customers are allowed only one. Both the tequila list and the Southwestern-style food menu are miles long keeping crowds of locals coming back for more. Although people come for the drinks the tables are full of diners snacking on Fried Calamari, multi-colored nachos and Mexican favorites.

Who needs food when the margaritas are so good? Made with all sorts of fruit, frosty, tangy and practically bottomless, the drinks are the draw here. The place is loud and exuberant and the service is efficient. Should you want something to munch on besides chips and salsa, there is a full menu of decent Mexican food. The prices are a bit above what you might find in a taqueria in the nearby Mission District, with entrees ranging from USD12-20.

Natural tones, blue walls, a terracotta kitchen and magical star-shaped lights create a highly inviting space at Mamacita. Furthermore, the rustic Mexican touches like the tin bar and the cacti lend the perfect ambience. The authentic cuisine, made with the freshest of ingredients, goes down well with the restaurant specialty, the tasty Pomegranate Margarita. Although the location may not be great and can get a little seedy, the generous portions and a wide range of beverages on offer make it worthwhile. This place is hard to categorize. The decor is quite elegant, yet the atmosphere is relaxed and comfortable. Filled with candles, fresh cut flowers and soft music, patrons eating here are dressed casually. The food presents a similar paradox, appearing to be Mexican, but tasting rather French. A salad comes dusted with vanilla-soaked corn kernels. Grilled Pork Tenderloin is accompanied by a sauce of Pumpkin Seed and Tamarind. Dessert pairs cinnamon, chocolate and poached apricots. Cultural confusion is rarely blended with such harmonious results. The service is excellent.

The dining room is large and may not have been remodeled since the '50s when those luxuriously padded leather booths were all the rage. The menu has escaped any current fads, too. It is the same solid, well-made Mexican food that has been drawing people of all ages here for a great meal and a good time for decades. You can have Nopales (cactus) with eggs for breakfast, a Lunch Plate of Enchiladas or Tacos, a dinner entree of Pork Chop, and then dream the rest of the night away with one of the best Margaritas anywhere from the full service bar. Gourmet "wrapps" (the yuppie word for burrito) come in international varieties like Thai Chicken, Samurai Salmon, Mexican Grilled Chicken and Caribbean Shrimp. Most varieties can also be served teriyaki bowl-style like salads. Vegetarians will find lots of meat-free dishes like Moo Shu Veggie, Teriyaki Tofu and Mushrooms. The restaurant also serves smoothies with vitamin boosts in flavors like Black and Blue (blackberries and blueberries) and Peanut Butter and Banana.

Zazil

Coastal Mexico Flavor
845, Market Street
Westfield San Francisco Center
San Francisco, CA 94103
United States
+1 415 495 6379
http://www.zazilrestaurant.com/
Located on the fourth floor of Westfield San Francisco Center, Zazil offers traditional dishes from the Caribbean coast of Mexico. The seasonal menu includes many Mayan-inspired entrées such as their Pollo con Huitlacoche and Cochinita Pibil, using ingredients imported straight from Mexico. Though children may be hard-pressed to find something to order on a menu populated largely by seafood dishes, the entrées at Zazil are inventive and refreshing. The front of the restaurant opens directly into the mall, so the noise level can get very high on weekends when the mall is full. Although reservations are not required, the wait can get upwards of 45 minutes during peak hours, but the elegance of the dishes and the fun, marine-inspired décor make it worth the wait.

Zona Rosa

Eat like an Aztec!
1797 Haight Street

A friendly hacienda decked out with Aztec art and artifacts, it offers a menu that will please everyone. Whether you are a Mexican food purists or a strict vegetarian, everyone loves the food here. If bowl after bowl of warm chips and addictive fire-roasted salsa do not fill you up first, try the Zona Rosa Burritto. A huge thing, this burrito is stuffed with choice of meat, cheese, potatoes, rice, beans, sour cream, and topped with a smoky BBQ sauce. Note: Cash only.
