1331 9th Avenue (between Irving Street & Judah Street) San Francisco, CA 94122 United States +1 415 566 3117 http://www.arizmendibakery.org/ |
This Inner Sunset neighborhood co-op, affiliated with Berkeley's Cheese Board, just may ruin you for any other bakery. They bake a wide range of breads, with a whole list of specials every day (grab a loaf of the Irish Soda Bread on Tuesdays). They turn out specialty scones and muffins all baked with tender loving care. Their cookies are at once familiar and surprisingly new (try Auntie Mabel's Cookie Brittle or the moist and crumbly Apricot-Almond). Kids love the crispy/cheesy bread sticks. If it's more than just a snack you're looking for, join the throngs filing in from the far reaches of the city for a slice or four of Arizmendi's famous pizza. They top each one with the freshest of locally raised veggies and the creamiest of specialty cheeses. Eat yours at one of two tables inside, on the benches out front, or in Golden Gate Park just a block away. See website for complete list of weekly bread, scone, muffin and cookie specials, as well as a mission statement and a comprehensive pizza calendar. Review © 2007, Wcities |

East Bay Gourmet |
1782 4th Street San Francisco, CA 94710 United States +1 510 525 1440 http://www.caferouge.net |
Cafe Rouge, located in the heart of Berkeley's hoppin' 4th Street shopping district, is an East Bay institution. Foodies flock from far and wide for treats as simple as a cheeseburger and as complex as a Mediterranean-style lamb shank entree. Menu items are rotated in and out of circulation every couple weeks, so expect to see new and exciting things every time you visit. Shellfish fans marvel at the massive oyster selection (officially celebrated at the weekly Oyster Wednesday party). Cafe Rouge is also well known for the quality of its meats, all of which come from the finest local and regional producers, and many of which are available for takeaway at the on-site Meat Market (where you'll also find all manner of cured meats, pates, terrines and sausages). Neighborhood Gourmet Comfort |
683 Chenery Street (at Diamond Street) San Francisco, CA 94131 United States +1 415 337 8537 http://www.chenerypark.com/ |
Continually singled out as one of San Francisco's best neighborhood restaurants, this off-the-beaten-path find has led locals to beat new paths straight into the charming neighborhood of Glen Park. The menu is a familiar but contemporary take on comfort food, some of which comes with an added dash of Southern flair. The gourmet macaroni and cheese is the talk of the town, the seafood gumbo is a hearty bowl of pure love, and the grilled lamb is without peer. Weekly specials include brisket, meatloaf, and "fried chicken and fixins". There is a full bar, an impressive wine list and a carefully chosen selection of draft beers (from such reputable micros as Anchor and Russian River). See website for full menu, weekly specials, kids night details and more. Review © 2007, Wcities |

All natural |
1130 Fourth Street San Francisco, CA 94901 United States +1 415 457 0566 |
Forget the name, the only thing even remotely reminiscent of Alaska here is the perfectly grilled salmon. The mood, like the clientele, is casually upscale and distinctly Marin, with pastel walls and a laid-back attitude that does not interfere with the great service from the personable wait staff. Everything on the menu, from the terrific spinach salad to the grilled lamb to the strawberry shortcake, is 100 percent organic and 100 percent delicious. The smoothies are locally famous, too, and come in a variety of combinations that change with the season. Review © 2007, Wcities |

French at its best |
4238 18th Street (between Diamond & Collingwood) San Francisco, CA 94114 United States +1 415 255 6565 http://www.cotesudsf.com |
Traditional French country cuisine minus the usual pontifical attitudes makes this one very busy restaurant. The simple, yet elegant décor of white tablecloth tables illuminated under the warm glow of candlelight exudes romance. Its kitchen strives for absolute culinary authenticity by employing only organic ingredients. Sautéed Rabbit, Leg of Duck Comfit, and Bouillabaisse are a few of its more popular offerings. Its wine "book" features more than 180 domestic and imported vintages. Sunday brunch is extremely popular. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The real thing |
1815 Market Street San Francisco, CA 94103-1107 United States +1 415 552 4451 http://www.destinosf.com/ |
The interior of this trendy tapas place exudes the golden glow of a Spanish sunset. The food inspires a similar warm glow. It is classic Tapas done to perfection, unsullied by the fusion craze, and served with panache. Beneath the impressive brass chandelier, you will find Empanadas, plates of different kinds of olives with complementary flavors, and Ceviche among the many selections that change daily. There's also a Sunday Brunch menu to satiate your morning hunger pangs. The crowd is youngish but sedate and the atmosphere is unhurried. All the better to linger over a few more tiny plates and a bottle of Spanish wine. Review © 2007, Wcities |

3607 Alameda de las Pulgas San Francisco, CA 94025 United States +1 650 854 1226 http://www.cooleatz.com/fleast... |
This homey cafe only appears to be ordinary, albeit charming with lace curtains and tablecloths. In fact, it is one of the Bay Area's groundbreaking cuisine style-setters, using local fresh organic produce long before it was trendy. Owner Jesse Cool has been written up locally and nationally for her innovative cuisine that changes with the seasons. The menu is a cross section of world cuisine with house-made Pastas, Enchiladas, Couscous and stir-fry selections. Vegetarians can order some entrees with Tofu instead of meat. The ambience here is one of the friendliest in the Bay Area and the dining is some of the finest anywhere. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Lots of food |
1915 Fillmore Street San Francisco, CA 94115 United States +1 415 775 4300 http://www.floriosf.com |
If you can't decide on a particular type of cuisine, trot done to Florio's. And take your pick from bistro and trattoria classics, steak frites as well as seafood. Don't forget the restaurant's own gelato and sorbetto en casa. The menu changes seasonally highlighting fresh ingredients and classic presentations. Inspite of the large menu, roast chicken consistently stays a favorite. Also try the roasted fulton valley chicken, if you are here for lunch. Dark wood paneling, black and white tiled floors and a mirrored bar shape constitute an inviting space. The interior of the dining room and a relaxed neighborhood location keep this eatery rather packed. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Juice that heals |
703 Columbus Avenue (at the corner of Filbert Street by Washington Square Park) San Francisco, CA 94133 United States +1 415 786 1285 http://www.juiceylucy.com/ |
This spot is possibly the only juice bar in San Francisco serving strictly organic juice and food. But it is easy to pass by it if you are not aware it exists. Don't worry; you're not the only one. This place has survived in North Beach purely by word of mouth. The ambience reminds one more of Haight-Ashbury than North Beach. Instrumental music fills the air, incense burns and patrons speak of yoga positions. It's a very peaceful atmosphere and the staff encourages you to slowly enjoy your juice. There are no to-go orders and no plastic cups, so it's not the best place for on-the-go types. If you want to relax, meditate and slow down the pace, this is definitely the place to be. Everything is organic. There are all sorts of interesting smoothies like Apple Mint Ginger, Orange Beet Ginger Mint and Almond Milk Banana with Rice or Soy Milk. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Slices & Pints |
4799 Telegraph Avenue (at 48th Street) San Francisco, CA 94609 United States +1 510 653 5350 http://www.lanesplitterpizza.com |
At this East Bay beer and pizza joint, located in Oakland's Temescal neighborhood, patrons feast on thin and crispy slices while watching the hustle and bustle of Telegraph Avenue right outside. The pies here are strictly New York style (some with names like "Herbivore" and "Garbage Pie"), and regulars will attest that Lanesplitter does it right. Plenty of tables and a ton of barstools mean there's almost always a spot for you. Six-foot picture windows all the way around the space afford diners a panoramic view and plenty of sunshine on a lazy afternoon. Round out your meal with a value-priced pitcher of one of the more than a dozen locally produced microbrews (including Anchor Brewing's Liberty Ale, a favorite among regulars). Heart Friendly Menu |
3352 Steiner Street At Chestnut San Francisco, CA 94123 United States +1 415 931 2777 http://www.lettusorganic.com |
This trendy lunch and dinner joint has one of the healthiest menus in the city. Set amidst the chic Chestnut Street boutiques, Lettus Cafe features an internationally inspired vegan-friendly menu, chock-full of organic and fresh-to-order entrees. Generally speaking, it attracts the hip and health conscious marina crowd, so more often than not, thin ladies and overly-tanned men can be seen lining up around the block for Mango Lime Chicken paninis, open faced crab cake sandwiches, and the Gardenbuger, which is by far the house favorite. The rustic decor is swanky and inviting, but if you're in a hurry, there's a 'grab-and-go' option. Portions are on the large side, so you certainly get what you pay for. It's the perfect place to go for a mid-week bite, a Sunday Brunch or anytime your in need of a corporate detox. Review © 2007, Wcities |

First-Class Lodge-Style Dining |
Manka's Inverness Lodge 30 Callender Way San Francisco, CA 94937 United States +1 415 669 1034 http://www.mankas.com |
At Manka's, just an hour north of San Francisco amid patches of coastal forest, dinners are full of whimsical dishes made daily from fresh local ingredients. The menus themselves describe each plate with equal whimsy. You can sometimes find "Mussels Topped with More Mussels" during Saturday Night Supper, while "Sunday Service in the Church of Culinary Delights" sometimes features "Sole Saved from the Surrounding Seas" (you are charged not for the food, but for "your penance"). Meals are often of the fixed-price persuasion, so prepare yourself for a full-on fine-dining experience. The kitchen prides itself on serving goods "farmed, fished and foraged within a half hour of your table," and that attention to detail keeps appreciative patrons coming back for more. Urban Renewal Baked in a Pie |
2901 Mission Street (at 25th Street) San Francisco, CA 94110 United States +1 415 282 1500 http://www.pieranch.org |
Mission Pie provides colorful slices of pie made with local and organic ingredients. Customers are served tea or coffee along with pies and other pastries by the same Mission High students who grew pumpkins, harvested berries, and collected eggs at Pie Ranch, the source for Mission Pie's ingredients. The students are learning about the potential for sustainable agriculture while living in an urban environment by cultivating the ingredients from their beginnings, and the customers are enjoying the end product. The original 14-seat bakery and cafe expanded into its larger corner location, with on-site baking, after less than a year of business. Cash only. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This salad stop is not only for tree-huggers and vegans. It is for anyone who wants to mix greens in their everyday diet. The array of green, blue, and red organic veggies, seafood, fowl, and eggs assures something for everyone. No Ordinary Nook |
1500 Hyde Street San Francisco, CA 94109 United States +1 415 447 4100 |
This little restaurant at Nob Hill has a wholesome feel to it. Breakfasts just get better with coffee, bagel sandwiches, quiches and breads, all served hot and piping. The area is well lit so you can solve that crossword while sipping on a soda. Lunch and dinner also have good variations of dishes. The wines are worth a try. And since it is popular with locals, the food runs out often. So be warned! Review © 2007, Wcities |

Creative Community Cuisine |
3499 16th Street San Francisco, CA 94114 United States +1 415 626 1700 http://www.tangerinesf.com |
Beautiful presentations, exceptionally fresh ingredients, and generous portions have made Tangerine a San Francisco staple since its opening in 2002. Situated in the trendy Castro district, owner Peter Goss has transformed the former space into a decidedly intimate atmosphere with hints of tropical flavor accenting the chic, homey interior. Chef Sean Pattansuvoranun delicately prepares each dish, focusing on the excellent presentation and sumptuous creativity for which the restaurant is known. With a focus on Asian fusion cuisine, starters such as the Grilled Prawns with Sun-dried Tomato Glaze and Croissant Salmon with Artichoke Dipping Sauce provide the perfect prologue with light portions and full flavors, enticing the palate and paving the way for such outstanding items as the Grilled Salmon Steak with Mango Salsa and Grilled Plum Wine Marinated Pork Tenderloin. However, do not let the phenomenal dinner menu deter you from visiting the famed Weekend Brunch. Each meal is accompanied with attentive, warm service, evoking the same neighborhood feel as its prime location. Peter Goss is fully aware of the interior aesthetics, encouraging the local art community by gracing his walls with various works by local artist Pete Hackett. Should you need to give your wallet a rest, try one of the advertised nightly specials such as "2 for 1 Mondays," "20% Off Tuesdays," or "Thrifty Thursdays," all of which encourage the community spirit while maintaining a slight air of sophistication. Tangerine successfully provides its adoring patrons with a symphony of flavors, innovative cuisine, and a dining experience to judge most others. -Casey Doward Review © 2007, Wcities |
