Flavorful neighborhood Cambodian |

If you have tried Vietnamese food and liked it, your next destination might want to be this cozy and elegant spot, where vibrant lime and coconut-infused renditions of catfish and chicken curry make an excellent introduction to the cuisine of neighboring Cambodia. The service is warm, and the interior is filled with Cambodian artifacts and souvenirs. Prices are quite reasonable, but there can be a wait on weekends for a table. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Fish of Different Sorts |

With rolls named Hope, Faith, and Love, you know you've entered a place that is as concerned with making delicious food as it is with providing you with a generally pleasant dining experience. A chef who expresses his enthusiasm for fresh fish through his dishes also heightens the dining experience. Fish you may have never heard of before will appear on the menu such as Japanese Yellow Jack and Scottish Salmon, not to mention inventive rolls such as the Moon Dog Roll (tempura prawn, crab, seared tuna, spicy sauce and teriyaki sauce). This coupled with affordable prices make it definitely worth your while. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Local specialties |

Simple yet impressive, Avenue G is an American restaurant serving up the local specialties of San Francisco. The ambiance is nothing spectacular and the menu is brief, but patrons throng the place for a taste of the regional flavors; another plus point is its location in the Richmond district, which never sees a dull day. The prices are a little high, but once you relish a meal here, you definitely won't mind the extra dollars — or the pounds you pack on! Review © 2007, Wcities |

An Exquisite Dinner! |
5800 Geary Boulevard San Francisco, CA 94121 United States +1 415 752 2222 http://www.aziza-sf.com/ |
Once you step inside Aziza, the bustle of Geary Boulevard is sealed off and you feel as though you've entered another world. The romantic interior, with its blue and red hues, mild lighting, and typically Moroccan modern design features doesn't overwhelm you; it just serves as a sensual backdrop to a truly memorable meal. Aziza's cuisine is Moroccan/French contemporary, and there is truly something for everyone, including many vegetarian options. For a light starter, try the County Line Wild Arugula, served with persimmon, Humboldt Fog cheese and almonds. Anything the dinner menu advertises is worth eating, from lamb to fish to heart vegetables to the sweet, circular treat called basteeya, a Moroccan specialty. Aziza is also famous for its creative cocktails - try "Coconut Milk," made of rose, horchata and rum. Paid valet parking available every night. Review © 2007, Wcities |

If you just cannot decide on a type of cuisine you are in the mood for, then this is the spot for you. Seeing Spanikopita and Tortellini on the same menu offers its own unique charm. This casual eatery, done up in a classic Italian restaurant motif, has Pan-Mediterranean offerings to go with its delightful selection of pizzas. The pizza crust is not too thick, not too thin and you can choose from a variety of toppings to top your pie. In addition, there are pasta dishes done to perfection, steaks cooked to order and even English-style fish and chips. The crowd is mostly locals, students and families. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Film & food |
5700 Geary Boulevard San Francisco, CA 94121 United States +1 415 387 3999 |
This all-night Richmond diner sticks to an entertainment theme. With a video store in front and monster-sized TVs, it redefines the phrase 'dinner and a movie'. The decor has a nostalgic feel with '50s-style booths and checkboard linoleum floors. The walls are filled with movie posters and patrons not talking have their eyes on the big screen television. Burgers, sandwiches, milkshakes, soups and more are available. The menu is filled with satisfying contemporary favorites. It is great place to take a friend for munchies after the bars close. 445 Balboa Street San Francisco, CA 94118 United States +1 415 933 7100 |
This rose and azure eatery is the spot to grab cutting edge Japanese fusion cuisine. Equal attention is taken in the preparation of the food and its presentation. A plate of savory garlic mussels, for example, becomes a bivalve bouquet. Sushi is the star here and the selection ranges from classic Tuna Nigiri to the house special Biiru Biru Roll that combines salmon, garlic and vegetables with a sweet garlic sauce. Crowds of students and yuppies fill the room as thoroughly as the Techno music fills the air. The wait staff is hip, personable and very efficient. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This is the San Francisco of the 1950s: gum-cracking waitresses with big smiles and long pony tails, oldies rising from the antique jukebox, thick milkshakes made with real ice cream spilling from old-fashioned stainless steel cups. Gourmet burgers, salty fries and other diner favorites round out the pre-cholesterol-counting era menu. On a sunny day, enjoy your trip down memory lane outside on the garden patio. Great barbeque in the Richmond District |
4128 Geary Boulevard (between Fifth and Sixth avenues) San Francisco, CA 94118 United States +1 415 387 7991 |
Restaurant connoisseurs repeatedly single out this restaurant as having some of the best Korean food in San Francisco. The decor is simple and nondescript with random posters of Korea and flowers punctuating the bare walls. Perhaps the most interesting decorative aspect is the clientele. Most nights, the restaurant is populated by a diverse crowd of San Franciscans who travel across The City to enjoy the food. Most meals come with a sauteed vegetable side dish and rice. Diners can chose to grill their own meals at their table, or have the chef custom-prepare their order in the kitchen. A favorite barbequed entree is kalbi, marinated chicken or beef served burrito-style, wrapped in a lettuce leaf. In addition the kitchen prepares a variety of traditional Korean fish and meat dishes. Great Locale, So So Food |
1090 Point Lobos San Francisco, CA 94121 United States +1 415 386 3330 http://www.cliffhouse.com |
The Cliff House, where San Francisco begins, has always been a quaint and utterly charming stop off point for San Francisco visitors. Even with a renovation, the Cliff House maintains its original charm, but is now 21st century spectacular. Gone are the old fashioned 1900's mahogany/ tar & spar-like decor and fittings, supplanted by brilliant vistas available throughout by the walls upon walls of glass overlooking the rocky precipice to the Pacific. The most striking addition is the ultra-modern Sutro Wing, home of Sutro's, which features seafood and organic produce. The Cliff House Bistro - situated in the original location - offers more traditional fare and it has a beautiful bar. Another addition is the Cliff House To Go, for takeaway orders. Diners should be aware that despite the ultra modern decor, the cuisine at the Cliff House leaves a lot to be desired. Besides being overpriced, most of the fare is tasteless. On Thanksgiving, for example you might order the turkey dinner, and not know whether you were eating turkey, chicken, fish, or ham! Or maybe it is simply cardboard. If the Cliff House is on your itinerary -- and it should be -- make the most of the tremendous ocean vistas, but steer clear of the food. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Be your own Korean chef! |
852 Clement Street (between Ninth and Tenth avenues) San Francisco, CA 94118 United States +1 415 387 7888 |
It is truly a hands-on dining experience at this stark black and white restaurant with mirrored walls and a waterfall sculpture at the door. You either order an entree or choose ingredients from the buffet at the back and then cook them yourself in a traditional Korean hot pot at your table. Because it is almost impossible to do this gracefully, it is loads of fun, plus, it is almost impossible not to turn out a delicious meal. Ingredients include pork, chicken, lamb, fish and beef all sliced and ready to go for the carnivore. There are also a few non-standard items, like pork intestines. For the vegetarian, there are tempting seasonal veggies as well as taro root and tofu. This place can be crowded on weekends, so go early. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Great Shanghai |
5344 Geary Boulevard San Francisco, CA 94121-2323 United States +1 415 751 6545 |
For really great Shanghai-style Chinese food with a price tag that is astoundingly low, this is the place to go. There is usually a line of locals with their families during peak hours, so even with the friendly efficient staff, the wait can be long. The decor is not special, with the usual Chinese prints on the wall and a fish tank to ward off bad luck. There is another full of carp waiting to become someone's delicious dinner. The noodle dishes, served with meat, chicken, seafood, or as an vegetarian dish are all good and savory without being overly seasoned. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Superior Chinese food |

This is a neighborhood restaurant with decidedly upscale food. It is also a little more adventurous, with Jellyfish tossed with Scallion Oil and Sea Cucumbers with Pork on the menu, in addition to the more traditional Chinese-for-Americans items, including vegetarian. There is usually a line on weekends, but the food is worth the wait. The Caramel Eggplant (an entree, not dessert) is sweet and savory, with just a hint of smoke. The airy decor is heavy on glass blocks and pale colors. Meals can be prepared without oil, salt or MSG on request. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Enjoy a taste of Italy in San Francisco's Richmond District. Each tiny green booth in the restaurant has an individual jukebox that blasts Italian pop music. Wicker baskets and bottles of Italian wine hang from the ceiling. Large paintings of Italy cover the walls. The house specialty is the Margherita pizza, a traditional thin crust Italian pizza with blended Italian cheeses, red sauce and tomatoes. Pink is the color of choice at this tiny storefront that serves delicious Dim Sum at bargain prices to locals from around the city. Walls, tables, chairs and menus all have a rosy glow that is a bit odd, but easy to overlook when you can buy two Barbecue Pork Buns, bursting with a savory filling, for under a buck. There are many places that, like this bright and airy Cantonese-style restaurant, offer tanks of live lobsters and crabs from which to choose your entree. At this very popular neighborhood spot, you will also find a tank of live shrimp, though you're not really expected to choose each and every prawn that will grace your plate. There are also wonderful steamed and baked fish dishes, the ingredients of which are only slightly less fresh than the tank denizens, as well as an excellent selection of vegetarian items on the menu. This restaurant prepares 28 different kinds of sushi, 18 types of sashimi, and over 50 kinds of rolls. This small, simple, but inviting Indian restaurant features unusual and exotic dishes such as Prawn-Do-Piaza and Hyderabadi Chicken Curry (with spices, apricot, and potato straws). The vegetarian menu will be more familiar to Westerners, but equally tasty. Service is friendly (if not always completely expert). Parking can be a challenge. Warm service, hot-tangy rijstaffel |
615 Balboa Street San Francisco, CA 94121 United States +1 415 387 5225 http://www.jakartarestaurant.com |
Many travelers to Amsterdam (and Indonesia, of course) have been introduced there to the sweet-fiery experience of Indonesian rijstaffel, or 'rice table' with its Bami Goreng and Nasi Goreng. It is a wonderful, do-it-yourself spread of hot and tangy ingredients. This cozy place's rendition of rijstaffel has an authentically 'zing', and can be unhesitatingly recommended. The menu also features Braised Oxtail and Indonesian Fried Chicken, and the appetizers, like the Matarbak Telor Jakarta (beef-filled pastries), also bear investigation. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A great place for crab |
2301 Clement Street (at 24th Avenue) San Francisco, CA 94121 United States +1 415 668 3382 |
This Richmond District Vietnamese restaurant is famous for tasty crab dishes. In fact, at the height of crab season, it is considered by many to be one of the best choices in the city for cracked crab. The decor is nothing extraordinary, perhaps in order not to distract from the delectable cuisine. While the kitchen offers up traditional dishes made from authentic Vietnamese recipes in the all-meat category, it is best known for its seafood. Diners living meatless will be pleased to find more than ten vegetarian dishes that are fresh and flavorful. For dessert try the Fried Banana with Coconut Ice Cream. The service is terrific. You will usually find students from the nearby University of San Francisco chilling out at this laid-back coffee-house with the shingled roof and the emphatically jittery purple sign. The picture windows in the cozy space keep things bright inside, handy for studying Aristotle or the morning paper. The menu includes coffee drinks, tea, hot chocolate and a selection of snacks, sweet and savory. For the price of a cup of coffee, you can hang out all afternoon. Only cash is accepted. Since 1959 this old-fashioned soda fountain has been serving homemade ice cream and all-American grill items. It only makes the classics, things such as hamburgers, hotdogs, and milkshakes. Sit at the retro ice cream counter and enjoy thick chocolate malts and banana splits, '50s style. The atmosphere has not changed much since Joe's opened way back when. Unique ice cream flavors that reflect the neighborhood include azuki bean, green tea, and Irish coffee, but fear not, it also makes all the usual flavors like chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry. The service is terrific. Review © 2007, Wcities |

John Campbell's Irish Bakery is the place you want to be for its choice selection of hot-oven savory delights. For more than 30 years, John Campbell has been satisfying hungry appetites here in San Francisco, as well as in his native Belfast. Not for nothing does John hold the order of the Master Baker of Belfast, and the City and Guilds Bakery Certificate. Some Irish specialties you'll find are crusty bread, soda bread, brown bread, and batch bread, among other delectables. The Sultana Scones are all mouth-watering and they alone will surely make you come back for more. Master chef's recommendations include Stewed Tripe topped with Peppers, Simmered Stingray or Japanese Egg Custard. Don't miss out on the most innovative sushi made with foei gras and goose liver. Wonderful, authentic Russian food |
600 Fifth Ave (at the corner of Balboa Avenue) San Francisco, CA 94118 United States +1 415 668 9292 http://www.katias.com/ |
A delightfully chic Russian restaurant done in light woods and shades of apricot. Crisp white linen is on the tables and smiles are on the faces of the staff who greet you warmly at the door. The food is wonderful, from the Varnischkes, to the Vegetarian Potato Pancakes, to the Blinis with your choice of filling, including Beluga caviar (a bit pricy but worth it.) Everything here is savory and beautifully presented. Desserts include a hefty Chocolate Walnut cake, Napoleans, and a traditional and tasty fruit pudding made with fresh fruit thickened with cornstarch. Tea is elegantly served the traditional way, in glasses with real silver holders. Dinner with appetizer and dessert runs between, lunch a little less. The wine list is small, but offers nice selections from California vinyards and a few imported from Mother Russia, too. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This storefront is not the fanciest place in the city. It is one of the best, though, for Korean food, making the crowd here an odd mix of students, yuppies, working-class types and Korean ex-pats with little in common but their love of good Korean food. The short ribs over rice is the most popular item on the menu, not surprising considering the tender beef is marinated in a tangy-hot sauce that is addictively delicious. You will also find excellent deep-fried items, of which the prawns are a good choice, mixed with fresh seasonal veggies. The wait staff is not the most personable around, but it is quick. This lavender-walled restaurant, with several San Francisco locations, is airy and bright. It features gracious service and flavorful food in significant quantities at great prices. The specialty is pan-fried flat noodles, which are prepared spicy or mild and served with a variety of vegetables and toppings (meat, fowl, seafood). Entrees can alternatively feature tofu for vegetarians, and when you order it that way, the waitperson will ask if you want to leave the eggs out - a thoughtful question in this vegan outpost of a town. Other items on the menu include wonderful Fried Rice (mountains of it) and Roast Duck for an unbelievable $7. The Fried Bananas and Coconut Ice Cream for dessert is also great. You may want to visit this restaurant becuase the sushi is inexpensive or perhaps because it's prepared from the freshest ingredients. Perhaps, however, the best reason to visit is simply that it is good food. The service is fast and the waitstaff is amicable. The decor is generic Japanese restaurant in style, but the dining area is bright and meticulously maintained. Diners can choose from a large selection of sushi rolls for around $2. In addition, the restaurant serves some unique creations including a chicken teriyaki and avocado roll and a spider roll, which includes a deep-fried softshell crab. Okay, do not go here for the food. It is not bad, but it is not great either, with serviceable omelettes, burgers, sandwiches, and red (not white!) clam chowder. Do not go here for the decor, which borders dangerously on early 60s in alarming shades of orange, harvest gold, and avocado. We go to this place because of the view, the friendly service and the low prices, in that order. Located just up the road from The Cliff House, it perches on a cliffside that overlooks the Pacific Ocean and Seal Rock to the west and the ruins of the Sutro Baths with a glimpse of the Marin Headlands to the north. Counter service if you must, but get a table by the picture window where you can and marvel at the wonder of the conjunction of sea and sky. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Perhaps the oldest Burmese restaurant in San Francisco, this lovely spot has an air of faded elegance to it. The food is assertive without being overpowering and any of the dishes you order can be prepared hot and spicy or salt-free by request. For something unique, try the Lap Pat Dok, a salad prepared with Burmese tea leaves, or Moo Hing Nga, a Burmese-style fish chowder. This spots menu offers some Chinese items, but they are unremarkable. Appetizers range $6-9, and entrees from $5-18. Lunch specials are less than $10. The service is pleasant and efficient. This small Vietnamese restaurant, holding just 35 people in a pinch, defines hole-in-the-wall. The décor is generic Asian redux with dark walls and a few menu notices tacked on them. Forget about all of that. This dimly lit eatery has some of the most delicious food going at prices that are incredibly low. The menu is extensive, including a vegetarian selection that, like all the food here, is tasty, but also inventive. Instead of the usual vegetable mush with bean curd so often found in smaller Asian places you'll find things like cold vegetarian rolls, which are a refreshing salad-like wrap. Another Vietnamese favorite, BBQ Five-Spice Chicken, is perfectly seasoned with tender, moist chicken. The family who own and run the place are extremely gracious. If you're feeling adventurous, try the green bean drink. Review © 2007, Wcities |

For instance, the salty Fish Platter (one of many delightful appetizers) is meant to be paired with white wine, as the wine serves to cut the salt. For dinner, try the hearty Galubtsy (ground meat cooked and rolled up in a cabbage leaf), or the sour cream and red caviar-filled blintzes. For dessert, pairing food and beverage again comes into play as the traditional cherry-filled dumplings with an alcohol-based sauce are quite sweet, but the wise diner knows to cut the sweetness with a nice cup of coffee. Service is excellent; dishes are traditional; prices are low; not ideal fare for vegetarians! Review © 2007, Wcities |

Inexpensive & Fun Sushi |
5701 Geary Boulevard San Francisco, CA 94121 United States +1 415 387 8561 |
Sakana Bune is a great place for cheap Japanese Cuisine brought to you by way of the sushi boat. The sashimi and rolls are very inexpensive, making it easy to order lots of different things and even easier to quell an appetite. The plates range from $1-3 and California Rolls are practically a dime a dozen. You couldn't ask for a better deal. Review © 2007, Wcities |

First name basis |

Legend has it that once the owners of this place serve you a cup of their excellent dark-roast java, they will get your name and then never forget you. Come in a day, week, or month later and they will greet you by name. It is a great reason to come to this tiny coffeehouse with the blue-on-blue paint job. But there is more than just that for the Gen-X and Yers who mix with the older neighborhood regulars. Newspapers, including the New York Times, hang on the newspaper rack for customers to peruse and the bagels are from House of Bagels, one of the best purveyors of this particular comfort food. There are also cookies and other light fare and reggae is (almost) always in the air. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Wonderfully Simple |
3226, Geary Boulevard (Between Parker & Spruce) San Francisco, CA 94118 United States +1 415 668 7711 |
This family-run Japanese restaurant might be on the small size, but what it lacks in space, it makes up for in taste. The menu offers many delicious traditional dishes including donburi, specialty sushi rolls and bento-style meals. Sanmi also offers combination complete dinners that are wonderful (daily specials are also always a good choice). They use only the highest quality of ingredients, especially fish, and the service is excellent. This venue feels homey and comfortable, but if you go around dinner time, the place can get quite busy. Patrons are neighborhood regulars, single diners, Japanese folks, and newbies, but everyone becomes a regular after their first experience. Every meal starts off with a pot of green tea and ends with a smile. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Austrian treats |

This wonderful German bakery has been purveying rich coffee cakes, creamy mousse cakes and a cornucopia of butter cookies since 1911. The tiny space with a few tables and chairs is usually crammed with people trying to decide between the classic Swedish Princess (white cake with raspberry and kirsch custard and marzipan icing, known as Prinsesstårta) and one of the many delicious French-inspired mousses and tarts. The fresh bread is also terrific, if you can tear yourself away from the Strawberry Romanoff. Review © 2007, Wcities |

International omelets |
545 Point Lobos Avenue San Francisco, CA 94121 United States http://www.sealrockinn.com/res... |
This Point Lobos restaurant isn't just for Seal Rock Inn guests. The owners would never deprive others of its ocean view or eclectic cuisine. A wonderful choice for breakfast, it serves an international assortment of omelets. Choose from Greek, with feta and fresh spinach, or Italian served with salami, Italian cheese and onions. Maybe you prefer Spanish, bell peppers, onions, celery, tomatoes and cheese, or spicy Mexican, with sausages, jack cheese and jalapeno pepper. On a different note, the French omelet with fruit, sour cream and pine nuts is a change of pace. For lunch and dinner it offers Greek dishes such as Gyros, Shish-ka-bob and hamburgers with feta cheese. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Fresh sushi |
2339 Clement Street San Francisco, CA 94121-1919 United States +1 415 752 4422 |
Locals repeatedly patronize this favorite because it has been serving fresh and affordable sushi. The dining area is Asian-influenced in its design, with great service and a casual atmosphere, but if you wish, you can get your food to go. The menu features sushi a la carte plus more Japanese favorites such tempura, as well as meat and poultry dishes. Also popular are the Teriyaki dinners that, like all the entrees, include soup and salad, rice, tea and a choice of ice cream. To drink, try a soda, sake, plum wine or imported beer. A touch of Bohemia in the Avenues |
3434 Balboa Street San Francisco, CA 94121 United States +1 415 387 4022 |
The spirit of Bohemia lives at this coffee house, from the marble counter to the mismatched second-hand furniture to the funky recycled crystal chandelier. Up front, the mural on the wall, painted in tones of espresso and cappuccino, depicts waves of java curling like a classic Japanese print. The clientele includes college kids cramming for exams and seniors checking the news in the free papers scattered around. Coffee drinks of all kinds are on the chalk board menu with Italian sodas, beer, wine, and hot chocolate as well as with calzone, sandwiches, soups and salads. Note: Cash only. Funky fusion |
836 Clement Street San Francisco, CA 94118 United States +1 415 750 9518 |
With such an abundance of Asian and Italian restaurants in the city, restaurants like Singapore Malaysian are a welcomed experience. The menu is an eclectic array of Malaysian, Asian, and Indian influences, which makes for exotic and unusual cuisine. The decor is unassuming, the atmosphere is casual but what they lack in appearance they make up for in attentive service and flavorful food. Popular dishes include Prawns and Eggs over Fried Noodles, Marinated Fish in Banana Leaf, and Chili Butterfish. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A taste of Saigon |

A large portrait of Saigon hangs on one pastel-painted wall of this restaurant, while a large tropical fish aquarium flanks the other. The atmosphere is both inviting and relaxing. The menu is traditional Vietnamese including a refreshing Raw Beef Salad and Grilled Pancakes filled with shrimp, pork and bean sprouts. Tea, sake, beer and cucumber juice are among the wide choice of beverage accompaniments. The staff is friendly and quick. Review © 2007, Wcities |

3721 Geary Boulevard San Francisco, CA 94118 United States +1 415 668 4466 |
This local favorite features a buffet lunch every day of the week for less than USD10. The decor is romantic and the food is affordable making this Richmond District restaurant a great place for Indian food any night of the week. There is nothing other than the food, though, to let you know that this bright and cozy eatery serves Indian cuisine. Specialties include Coconut Curry, breads, and vegetarian entrees. Most dishes can be prepared to your taste, either mild, medium or hot. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Spicy, delicious and original |

This little gem is located far from the center of town, but that does not detract from its appeal. It is one of the few places where one can find top-quality Singapore-style cuisine. Any menu item is a sure winner. Try Roti Prata, a grilled Indian-style bread dipped in Potong Kari Ayam, Singapore-style Coconut Curry Chicken. The curry is creamy, smooth and good enough to drink. A full dinner and one drink at Straits could cost as little as $22, and served by a gracious and efficient wait staff. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Ka-boom! This Japanese sushi bar and restaurant serves affordable cuisine and features lots of tempura, teriyaki, donburi, sashimi, and sushi dishes. The sushi is very fresh and runs around $4 for two pieces. Eat in a friendly atmosphere, order take-out or ask about the delivery services. The dining area is Asian-inspired, casual, and low key with great service. Acclaimed house specialties include the Boom Roll (shrimp, tempura, crab, avocado, and special sauce), the Geary Roll (barbecued eel, avocado, and crab), and the San Francisco Roll (spicy tuna and avocado). Satisfy your sweet tooth at this Richmond District ice cream parlor and candy shop. A neighborhood favorite, it serves around a dozen different flavors of ice cream for cones to go. You can also find bins of dried fruit and flavorful Asian delicacies. Kids and adults love the large selection of chewy, soft gummi candies. Some are sour, all are sweet; you can make your own mix of worms, fish, bears, and ropes. No credit cards are accepted here. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The first authentic Taiwanese Restaurant in the United States |
445 Clement Street (between Fifth and Sixth avenues) San Francisco, CA 94118 United States +1 415 387 1789 |
This restaurant claims to be the first Taiwanese restaurant in the country. While it cannot offer definitive proof, it does serve a tasty style of Taiwanese food. The pink-bubblegum interior is lighthearted in contrast to the seriously good food. The space is smallish, but well laid-out so you never feel cramped. Inside, a mix of locals and young intellectuals from the nearby universities congregate. In addition to traditional Chinese food, the menu offers a few unique dishes for the more adventurous diners. Lunch specials include fried yam cakes or Five-Spiced Pork Ears. The dinner menu is similar with entrees priced between $8-9. The noodle dishes are a sure winner, and service is quick. For spicy, authentic Thai cuisine, this restaurant is a favorite with locals on a budget. For around $5 you can get a hearty meal that's as good, if not better, than more expensive Asian restaurants. The menu offers beer, affordable wine and a variety of authentic Thai meat, seafood, and vegetable dishes. Vegetarians have a lot to choose from including spicy tofu entrees, exotic red curry vegetables, and creamy soups. When in doubt, order the Thai Pancake, it is stuffed with ground shrimp and vegetables, and tastes divine. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A fun neighborhood restaurant to visit, locals count on awesome Margaritas and a big plate of authentic Mexican food. The atmosphere is festive and welcoming. Dim lighting, upbeat music, cold drinks, and hot salsa make for a great neighborhood hangout. Pretty much everything on the menu is good. The chef prepares generous portions of traditional Northern Mexican cuisine. You cannot go wrong whether you are in the mood for Steak Picado, Chicken Fajitas, or Cheese Quesadillas. The bartender was once named as one of the city's five best by 'Focus Magazine'. Review © 2007, Wcities |

One of the nation's leading tequila experts owns this Mexican eatery. If you make it to his restaurant, you will be rewarded with some of the best margaritas in the city. In fact, they've been voted just that for 11 years running by The Guardian and The San Francisco Chronicle. The house margarita is made with Herradura Silver tequila. Or, for a kick, try one of the over 200 premium tequilas from around the world. Tommy's serves hearty Mexican fare for medium prices (USD10-20 for dinners). The service is friendly and quick. This home-style eatery with formica tables and huge windows specializes in Hakka cuisine. It is known for, among other things, its flavorful and complex stews. There are many tofu dishes on the menu, but usually mixed with meat or chicken. Vegetarians should double-check with the efficient wait staff before selecting an entree. There is always a crowd here, but seating, particularly at off-peak hours is never a problem among the locals and others of all ages and incomes who have made this place so popular. Sweets & collectible toys |
401 Clement Street (at the corner of Fifth Avenue) San Francisco, CA 94121 United States +1 415 751 7505 |
Is it a toy store? Is it a dessert café? No! It is a happy hybrid selling delectable indulgences and collectible, pop-culture toys. What can compare to savoring a slice of pumpkin cheescake while simultaneously gloating over finding a fire-breathing wind-up Godzilla or a complete miniature set of the South Park gang? The toys cover the walls, shelves, and windows of this turquoise-blue Victorian, while the treats occupy display counters in this whimsical enterprise for grown-ups still in touch with their inner kid. There is both table and booth seating for about 20. Double Rainbow ice cream, Just Desserts baked goods, as well as coffee, hot chocolate, and tea are served. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This unassuming Vietnamese restaurant is pleasant enough that Richmond District locals come back for more. The atmosphere is as bright and welcoming as the food is tasty. The menu consists of traditional southern Vietnamese dishes. Favorites include the Imperial Rolls stuffed with pork, shrimp and vegetables, the Clay Pot Special (stir-fried chicken, Chinese sausage, mushrooms and ginger over rice), and Flaming Beef & Prawns. Also find a wide selection of vegetarian dishes from hot and sour soup to eggplant in garlic sauce. The service is great. Review © 2007, Wcities |

'Sushi Like Mom Used to Make,' the owners claim. You will have to decide that for yourself, but We Be Sushi's four San Francisco locations (with a fifth in Sunnyvale) do offer excellent and inexpensive sushi in all styles. The atmosphere is spartan and sometimes slightly cramped. All the other three We Be Sushi's are popular: two are on Bohemian Valencia Street (538 and 1071 Valencia Street), one in the Inner Sunset District feeds thousands of UCSF medical students (94 Judah Street).
