21st Amendment

Good Food Slow, Slow Service
563 2nd Street
(Btwn Brannan & Bryant)
San Francisco, CA 94107-1411
United States
+1 415 369 0900
http://www.21st-amendment.com
Let it be said that 21st Amendment has good food, reasonable prices and a generally friendly atmosphere. However, it must also be said, that the service in this SOMA joint is absolutely as slow as Moses using a walker. Stop by here if you like, get a cocktail and chill with your buds. But just be certain you are not on any kind of schedule, since it will take literally forever to get served any kind of food. Specialities include the classic '21 A Burgers' that are made with Niman Ranch beef and served with hearty fries. In short, 21st Amendment is the right spot for an after-work drink, a satisfying lunch or cozy dinner, so long as you are not on the clock.

Diners can hand-pick their fish dinner at this Fisherman's Wharf restaurant. The restaurant boasts both a 160-gallon abalone tank and a 1,000-gallon crab and lobster tank. A century-old restaurant that has been passed through the generations of one family, this restaurant offers a brilliant view of the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz. The menu is offered in nine languages and most of the waiters, who offer quick and friendly service, are (at least) bilingual.

Fisherman Wharf's oldest restaurant began as a crab stand in 1920 serving seafood cocktails out of a paper cup. Today it is a successful fine seafood restaurant specializing in traditional Sicilian recipes. Sitting right on the water, it offers one of the best views of the Bay. The upstairs dining room offers an old-world charm and an award-winning wine list. The downstairs offers favorites that include the homemade seafood sausage, an exclusive Crab Cioppino and a rich Seafood Risotto. The Oysteria serves seafood cocktails, pizza, salads, soups and sandwiches. The service is great.

Baby Sal's Seafood Grill

Seriously good seafood
60 Corte Madera Avenue
San Francisco, CA 94925-1303
United States
+1 415 927 0149
The seafood here could not be fresher or better prepared. The decor is early waterfront, but, this being Marin, that bric-a-brac is vintage, not second-hand. The food is also deceptive. Seafood platters, batter-fried shrimp and such are the order of the day and though it is the staple bill of fare at seafood places everywhere, here the batter is light and ever so slightly sweet, which makes it a good complement to the fish and shrimp it encases. Moreover, the frying is done to crisp perfection, and the greasiness is virtually nonexistent. There are broiled lobster tails and fish dishes, too, depending on what the day's catch is, as well as a nice Linguine with Clam Sauce, and kid's meals that are a great deal. The crowd is locals of all ages, but especially families with kids, and the wait staff is great with them all.

Banana Island is tropical in terms of its ambience, but the food is South-East Asian. If you're looking for Thai, Malaysian or Singaporean food, this is where you'll get the best. There is live cooking that takes place in the middle of the restaurant, so hygiene freaks can see what's going into their food and eat peacefully. Try the Hot & Spicy Crab or Lobster if you like your food hot! The Coconut Jumbo Prawns and a lot of other seafood specialties are a must! For years, Tartine Bakery has bowled everyone over with mind-bendingly awesome baked goods. Then they set their sights on dinner. They opened Bar Tartine on a hoppin' section of Valencia Street, and fans of rustic-but-elegant cuisine lined up. Every meal starts with a hearty hunk of crusty bread that will make you completely reevaluate your feelings about crusty bread. Enjoy small plates and wines by the glass at the inviting bar, or sit down to a full multi-course feast at a table. The menu changes seasonally, but expect to find nothing but the finest in locally raised meats, seafood and vegetables. The wine selection is excellent, Chimay is on draft, and the desserts (as per the place's pedigree) are jaw dropping.

Bender's is a Mission District legend. Firebombed into oblivion in 2006, its valiant founders rallied the troops, and with a cavalcade of community support, reopened just a year and half later -- bigger and better than ever. Noteworthy improvements include some terrifically sleazy signage rescued from Valencia Street's now-defunct Leather Tongue Video, as well as a bar surface fashioned out of a lane from the bowling alley now inhabited by Amoeba, and of course some choice burnt-to-a-crisp fire wreckage kept around as trophies of the place's victory over tragedy. Comfy booths surround the pool table and the grill, which is operated by the folks at Weird Fish. The beer selection is great, the booze selection is fab, and as the straight-shootin' staff'll tell ya, wine is "red" or "white".

Cliff House

Great Locale, So So Food
1090 Point Lobos
San Francisco, CA 94121
United States
+1 415 386 3330
http://www.cliffhouse.com
The Cliff House, where San Francisco begins, has always been a quaint and utterly charming stop off point for San Francisco visitors. Even with a renovation, the Cliff House maintains its original charm, but is now 21st century spectacular. Gone are the old fashioned 1900's mahogany/ tar & spar-like decor and fittings, supplanted by brilliant vistas available throughout by the walls upon walls of glass overlooking the rocky precipice to the Pacific. The most striking addition is the ultra-modern Sutro Wing, home of Sutro's, which features seafood and organic produce. The Cliff House Bistro - situated in the original location - offers more traditional fare and it has a beautiful bar. Another addition is the Cliff House To Go, for takeaway orders. Diners should be aware that despite the ultra modern decor, the cuisine at the Cliff House leaves a lot to be desired. Besides being overpriced, most of the fare is tasteless. On Thanksgiving, for example you might order the turkey dinner, and not know whether you were eating turkey, chicken, fish, or ham! Or maybe it is simply cardboard. If the Cliff House is on your itinerary -- and it should be -- make the most of the tremendous ocean vistas, but steer clear of the food.

Everything here has Mexican and Central American flair. You will find flavorful steak dishes served with heaping portions of fried plantains and bean and rice, as well as 'Pupusas' as good and as authentically prepared as any in the city. Popular with students, Bohemians, Latin ex-pats and yuppies, the eatery has a casual atmosphere and a cheery, efficient wait staff.

Located in an odd-looking business/shopping complex on Polk Street, this Vietnamese seafood restaurant is known all over the city. Walk up two flights of stairs (or take the elevator) and you will find that the atmosphere is elegant, the dress code is semi-formal and the food is excellent. People come from miles around to feast on the Roast Crab and garlic-infused noodles, but most of the other menu items are equally good. If you are on a budget, watch out: the prices seem low, but once you start to order, they can add up quickly.

Strictly speaking, the name is accurate. It is what is served here. Still, you have to admire the moxie in choosing that particularly descriptive name. Concentrate, though, on the delicious Neapolitan-style cooking here from recipes handed down by the owner's grandmother. In addition to the terrific mussels, shellfish and fish dishes, find top quality prime rib and wonderful pastas. Specials change daily from the Broiled Halibut in Marinara Sauce to the hearty, house-made Cioppino. The service is warm and friendly for the popular favorite with locals and tourists.

In the heart of the Outer Mission District, where Valencia dead ends into Mission Street, lies a hidden gem. While the Taqueria Can-Cun outpost across the way has garnered more accolades, El Patio is an exceedingly pleasant place for a home-cooked meal. Unlike its burrito-centric neighbors, this establishment offers full sit-down service, and heaping plates of Salvadoran and Mexican specialties. Sun streams in through the windows and skylights, providing ample reason to sit around drinking imported beer (such as Suprema or Regia), enjoying the sights and sounds of the bustling intersection out front -- and perhaps chowing down on a few plates of pupusas or a hot lengua entree.

In 2005 Elite Cafe was renovated and, inexplicably the oyster bar that faced out toward Fillmore Street was torn out. Too bad, since this feature was a very big selling point for Elite. Although you can still find some nice entrees and appetizers, you should only patronize this place if you have nothing but time on your hands. The service, particularly at the bar is terrible. When you order a drink you will have time to do your laundry and maybe even squeeze in some grocery shopping before the barman gives you your cocktail.

Luckily there is a full bar upstairs at which you can wait and have a selection of fine wines or cocktails. This is one of the largest fish restaurants in the area. The fish comes from the owner's own fishing fleet and the oysters from that same owner's oyster farm. That lack of a middleman might account for the great prices for some of the freshest, best-prepared seafood you are likely to come across. The menu reflects the day's catch, but whether grilled over mesquite, broiled, or pan-fried with a little butter and garlic, the food is basic and flavorful served up to locals with sides of French fries, coleslaw and sourdough bread by a cheerful, efficient staff.

Yes, the chicken is that good. There are several lovely starters. The Carciotie Pepe Rosso is a favorite consisting of a huge platter of fresh artichokes, roasted peppers, basil, toasted pine nuts and gorgonzola cheese. Built in 1898, it is still replete with the elegance of that bygone age with its rich redwood paneling, mural on the ceiling and ornate decorative motifs. It almost distracts from the spectacular view of San Francisco and the Bay. Its many incarnations include a cool jazz club frequented by Hendrix and Joplin in the '60s when it was known as The Trident. The atmosphere is far more sedate today with contemporary California cuisine such as the delectable Calamari appetizer served up by an efficient wait staff. Locals and tourists alike can be found here, dining on crab cakes or sitting on the deck to enjoy the view with a martini. In fact, at the height of crab season, it is considered by many to be one of the best choices in the city for cracked crab. The decor is nothing extraordinary, perhaps in order not to distract from the delectable cuisine. While the kitchen offers up traditional dishes made from authentic Vietnamese recipes in the all-meat category, it is best known for its seafood. Diners living meatless will be pleased to find more than ten vegetarian dishes that are fresh and flavorful. For dessert try the Fried Banana with Coconut Ice Cream. The service is terrific.

Chef Jackson Yu, who has worked at Ebisu , ensures that the other dishes are also as fresh as they can be by having fresh fish brought in daily to avoid freezing. No matter what you order, whether it be simple nigiri, something unique, or a roll, you will be impressed.

You can sometimes find "Mussels Topped with More Mussels" during Saturday Night Supper, while "Sunday Service in the Church of Culinary Delights" sometimes features "Sole Saved from the Surrounding Seas" (you are charged not for the food, but for "your penance"). Meals are often of the fixed-price persuasion, so prepare yourself for a full-on fine-dining experience. The kitchen prides itself on serving goods "farmed, fished and foraged within a half hour of your table," and that attention to detail keeps appreciative patrons coming back for more.
