Amoura Cafe

Mediterranean snack joint
865, Market Street
The Westfield Centre
San Francisco, CA 94103
United States
+1 415 357 9611
Housed in the basement of the Westfield Center, Amoura Cafe boasts of a Mediterranean fare as well as splendid coffee. The beverages are not really good preparation-wise, but the different snacks and sandwiches are worth a try. The salads on offer seem to be the best as a lot of people opt for those after a whole day of shopping. Definitely, not the best snack joint around but because of its location, it gets a decent turnout daily.

Located downtown, this restaurant offers up fine, reasonably priced meals in a crisp dining atmosphere for the downtown shopper or business person. The ambiance is bright and feeds off the action in the street, the waitstaff aims to please, and the full bar is only a stone's throw away.

Admidst silk and embroidered finery, sits an authentic Italian cafe where one can order pizzas, paninis, soup, and pastas. The attentive waitstaff, decked out in black Giorgio (that Giorgio) creations, cheerfully whips up drinks and takes your order. The menu features Proscuitto e Fruita, Prosciuitto de Parma with seasonal fruit. Pizzas, such as the Ligure, which is prepared with black olives, caramelized onions, sundried tomatoes and goat cheese, are prepared right in front of you. And what better way to chew over the idea of dropping an easy $1,000 on an outfit than over a sumptuous Creme Brulee and cappuccino.

For the moms, there are salads on the menu; from the Caesar to the Southwestern, all are tasty and healthy. The soups cannot be left behind in the list of good items. Try the vegetarian fare or the sea food. These are available on skewers as well. A great place for a family who likes to eat together.

Four locations in the city explain Burger Bistro's popularity. It serves American cuisine on all days of the week and has a heavy flow of customers. As you may have guessed from the name, the hamburgers here are a favorite, though there are other items on the menu too. Since burgers may not do it for some people, the place also offers fresh salads as well as sandwiches to name a few. Though it may sound like a fast-food joint, they do provide seating. Don't expect to be waited on over here, you just have to walk up to the counter and place your order and a server shall bring it to your table.

Blondie's Pizza

Not everyone wants a huge slab of pizza at 9:30 in the morning, but if you suddenly have a craving for one, this is the place to go. It is a tiny, no-frills storefront that serves slices to go that are also no-frills, but are huge. The toppings are limited to the classics: cheese, pepperoni, and such, but they are tasty, filling and ready when you are. The line of locals on their lunch break and tourists looking for a quick bite between sightseeing stops gets longer at peak hours, but there is enough steady business all day to keep the pizza fresh and the prices low.

Boudin Sourdough Bakery & Cafe

A San Francisco tradition
Vlaamse Kaai 76

San Francisco, CA 2000

+1 415 296 4740
It was during the Gold Rush that French immigrant and bread maker Isadore Boudin first hit on his recipe for sourdough bread that earned him a place in San Francisco history. The baking method hasn't changed in all that time. Other sourdough bakeries have come and some have gone, but for many native San Franciscans, this is the only sourdough that matters. The company expanded into the restaurant business a few years back where, in a casual setting, you can get either good clam chowder or a huge salad in a bowl made from their signature sourdough. Sandwiches, pizza, and a selection of bakery dessert treats are also on the menu. This is a great place for a quick lunch.

The enormous neon sign shows Chianti ebulliently spilling into an oversized glass. Its 1950s flavor applies to the decor inside, too. Italian and Italian-American pop culture artifacts are scattered everywhere. Note the so-called Pope's table, featuring a bust of John Paul II. The food is hearty and served family-style in enormous portions to local professionals, students and tourists. There is nothing gourmet per se on the menu, but the Spaghetti, Ravioli, Lasagna, Scampi and various incarnations of Parmagiana (veal, eggplant, chicken) are made with care and are delicious. The wine list has a few Chiantis.

This is a cozy spot for local foodies to have breakfast or dinner (no lunch is served) surrounded by an airy, modern decor inspired by the 1920's-1940's Arte Moderne movement. Chef Laurent Manrique produces cuisine that blends classic cooking techniques from the Southwest of France with California feeling and seasonal ingredients. The menu features such luxurious offerings as the Matelote d'Anguille (oxtail and Japanese eel braised in Bordelaise sauce) or the Poulet au Pot (poached free range chicken stuffed with foie gras), and for dessert, Souffle a la Poire (pear souffle). The wine list (prices vary) and the service are both outstanding. There is also a no reservation lounge with lighter menu options.

Among the polished granite and brushed chrome, the service is professionally efficient, with a minimum of chatter beyond recounting the specials. The food is meticulously prepared California cuisine with some odd but welcome representatives of other regional fare, including Jambalaya made with an authentic-tasting andouille sausage. Other choices include excellent breakfasts, fresh fish, pastas, and steaks cooked to order. The wine list is good, with California vintages taking pride of place. A good bottle starts at around $15. This historic restaurant has been serving loyal patrons and celebrities alike since 1908. Deeply rooted in San Francisco history, it holds a position in literary history as well. Writer Dashiell Hammett often visited the dark-panelled restuaurant with white linen tablecloths and mentioned it in his novel 'The Maltese Falcon'. Sam Spade ordered the chops. Try one of the dishes featured in 'Gourmet Magazine' such as Chicken Jerusalem or Oyster Wellington. The wine list, featuring California selections, is serviceable with a good bottle starting at $15. This place is hard to categorize. The decor is quite elegant, yet the atmosphere is relaxed and comfortable. Filled with candles, fresh cut flowers and soft music, patrons eating here are dressed casually. The food presents a similar paradox, appearing to be Mexican, but tasting rather French. A salad comes dusted with vanilla-soaked corn kernels. Grilled Pork Tenderloin is accompanied by a sauce of Pumpkin Seed and Tamarind. Dessert pairs cinnamon, chocolate and poached apricots. Cultural confusion is rarely blended with such harmonious results. The service is excellent.

California is breaking the mold with the franchise Melt Gelato & Crepe Cafe, now open in the Westfield San Francisco Shopping Centre, offering multiple flavors of gelato and spectacular crepe creations to fill you up. In exchange for the prices, you get very good service and the option to buy tickets for the Metreon's in-house theaters right there at your table instead of having to stand in line at the box office. Even in a city full of great restaurants, this swank spot is a standout. It is a delight for all the senses: the ambience is classy, the food is outstanding, and the aroma coming from the wood-fired ovens is irresistible. Even though it's a bit pricey, it is worth the price tag for the excellent food and scrumptious surroundings. The menu reads like a beefed-up California-style take on the best rustic cuisines from around the world. The thin-crust pizzas win awards on a consistent basis and the nightly oak-fired rotisserie specials win rave reviews seemingly every few minutes. The bartenders behind the full bar mix a never-ending supply of exciting specialty cocktails. See website for sample menu, sister restaurants and more.

An elegantly understated decor makes this place seem like it should be tucked away in an exclusive part of the city, not sharing space in a downtown mall, chic and upscale though the Metreon is. The food is equally elegant, prepared meticulously for optimum flavor and authenticity. The sleek sushi bar serves up delicious Hand Rolls, Nigiri, and Sashimi. For lunch, find the traditional Bento Box with a tempting assortment of sushi, tempura, vegetables and either rice or noodles. The service for the locals and tourists who make this place so popular is quick from both the ebullient chefs and the friendly wait staff.

South Beach Grill

Fast and great
600 Folsom Street & Second Street
San Francisco, CA 94107

+1 415 543 2053
This place may be less than posh. Way less actually, but for some reason it is a big hit with local professionals who want a quick breakfast or lunch. Packed together at the counter and filling the Formica tables, they order up eggs and pancakes for breakfast, burgers or fish and chips for lunch while closing deals on their cell phones or swapping stock market tips and horror stories. The fare is basic, but delicious, and with the quick, cheerful service and the rock bottom prices, it is easy to overlook decor whose highlight is a faded poster of the Golden Gate Bridge.

In the midst of all the SoMa multimedia companies, loft spaces and clubs, is this little oasis of calm. This tiny restaurant is one of the best and is known for its food and ambience. Squeeze into a tiny table and enjoy the late afternoon sun and the buzz of conversation. Any item on the menu is good. Try the roast duck or the fresh salmon. The chef prepares all of the food to classic French standards: creamy, rich, and delicious. A dinner here is the best way to escape to Paris, short of getting on a plane.

Look carefully for this downtown sushi bar or you might miss it. The tiny entrance has stairs that immediately lead downstairs to a cozy, traditionally spare Japanese dining room. Filling the center of the room is an imposing sushi bar, circled by boats ferrying a shifting selection of fresh sushi. To the side are booths where one can order exactly the sushi selection one wants without having to grab it off a moving target. The staff is brisk and efficient, and the prices are reasonable.

This venue's name came from the duo of chefs operating out of the second restaurant at this location (formerly Hawthorn Lane). It has a retro vibe with coconut lights, a copper and concrete bar, and a 14-person, acacia wood, communal table. Since its opening in 2007, it has offered a "simple, lusty and fresh" menu with ingredients often made in-house. The eclectic menu includes Ricotta Stuffed Squash Blossoms, House Smoked Salmon Pizza, and Pan-fried Pork Schnitzel. Loosen your belt buckle to make room for the Warm Flavorosa Pluot Buckle. They have an extensive wine list including four custom-blends and "50 Under $50." For those who want to amaze their friends with cooking prowess, TWO offers cooking classes on Saturday mornings, which are chosen from a lottery two months in advance.

Slow cooking makes the difference

San Francisco, CA 94103

The ambiance here is Mexican Bohemian, with students, artistic types, yuppies, tourists and Mexican ex-pat families mixing easily over huge platters of enchiladas, tacos, fajitas and other authentic Mexican favorites. The beef here is slow-cooked and exceptionally flavorful with its chilly-spiked marinade. The other dishes are not the worst for comparison, though the succulent chicken is worth noting. The service is friendly and personable, though peak hours can make them less than quick, so plan accordingly. Payment is in cash only. There are two other locations as well; one in the Mission and one on Market.

From the outside, this brew-pub has the look and size of a warehouse. The interior, however, has been designed with comfort in mind. Tables and stools offer plenty of room to relax, while pool and darts are available if you feel more energetic. The cuisine here is a fabulous mix of Spanish, Basque, and Catalan dishes which make for an exotic feast. They go perfectly with a spicy pint of dark ale.

Jacket, tie and reservation all required here. This place is posh and you will get the royal treatment. Valet parking, cushy booths, and a full bar are all available to pamper you. "Cuisine Chinese" is the sort of food emperors and empresses dined on in Ancient China. Start with the Lobster Pot Stickers and continue with the whole fresh Maine Lobster, shelled and sauteed with pinenuts, mushrooms and a Peppercorn Sauce over crystal noodles. Minced Squab Imperial is another delicacy, as is the Tea and Camphorwood-smoked Duck. The service is first-rate for the upscale crowd here. Soft lighting, light music and seamless service set the perfect stage for this gourmet feast of royal delights.

Within this down-on-its-heels diner you will not find any notable decor. Tables, chairs and a long counter fill the room, all of them packed with locals, ex-pat Vietnamese, upscale business types, and students who love the food here. Toothsome Shrimp Dumplings wrapped around stalks of crispy-sweet sugar cane, Pho soup that is rich and nourishing with bits of beef or pork swimming in long-simmered broth, and Lemon Beef Over Rice that is bracing and hearty are just a few of the delicious dishes served up here. The wait staff is quick, but much too busy for service that is more than efficient.
