Housed in the basement of the Westfield Center, Amoura Cafe boasts of a Mediterranean fare as well as splendid coffee. The beverages are not really good preparation-wise, but the different snacks and sandwiches are worth a try. The salads on offer seem to be the best as a lot of people opt for those after a whole day of shopping. Definitely, not the best snack joint around but because of its location, it gets a decent turnout daily.

Voted "best take-out" by readers of the San Francisco Bay Guardian, this place specializes in tasty and imaginative gourmet soups. The cafe features one long bar where you order soup, as well as plastic tables for dining inside and outside. Popular with downtown professionals, the soups are served with a big slab of fresh sourdough bread. Each day there are more than 10 kinds of soups to choose from. Popular varieties include Shrimp Bisque, Minnestrone with Pesto, Butternut Squash, Southwestern Corn Chowder, and Mexican Chicken Tortilla. For breakfast, there are no soups, but there is a fine selection of pastries and some of the best oatmeal in The City.

+1 415 775 6406 This looks like a dive from the outside with the less-than-professionally lettered sign, but inside it is cozy, almost homely, and one of the best purveyors of soup in the city. The owner personally selects the fresh ingredients and then prepares each pot of hearty vegetable, split pea with ham, and thick, spicy chili, among others on a menu that changes irregularly. He is also big on conversation with his clients on anything from the weather to metaphysics. The prices are a deal. For less than $5 you get soup, a beverage, crackers, and free refills on the soup served at the loop-around counter or at the tables next to the picture windows.
