Banana Island is tropical in terms of its ambience, but the food is South-East Asian. If you're looking for Thai, Malaysian or Singaporean food, this is where you'll get the best. There is live cooking that takes place in the middle of the restaurant, so hygiene freaks can see what's going into their food and eat peacefully. Try the Hot & Spicy Crab or Lobster if you like your food hot! The Coconut Jumbo Prawns and a lot of other seafood specialties are a must! Barbecue aficionados can be fanatically devoted to a particular regional style and those who swear by the Memphis variety, pick this place for the rich smokey goodness to be found here. The place is as down home as the cooking with a cinderblock exterior, but the heavenly aroma of sausage links, chicken, ribs and the house special Pulled pork transforms this unprepossessing spot into a destination eatery for the Bay Area. The side orders of coleslaw, beans, potato salad are terrific, too. The service is fast and friendly.

Great barbeque in the Richmond District
4128 Geary Boulevard
(between Fifth and Sixth avenues)
San Francisco, CA 94118
United States
+1 415 387 7991
Restaurant connoisseurs repeatedly single out this restaurant as having some of the best Korean food in San Francisco. The decor is simple and nondescript with random posters of Korea and flowers punctuating the bare walls. Perhaps the most interesting decorative aspect is the clientele. Most nights, the restaurant is populated by a diverse crowd of San Franciscans who travel across The City to enjoy the food. Most meals come with a sauteed vegetable side dish and rice. Diners can chose to grill their own meals at their table, or have the chef custom-prepare their order in the kitchen. A favorite barbequed entree is kalbi, marinated chicken or beef served burrito-style, wrapped in a lettuce leaf. In addition the kitchen prepares a variety of traditional Korean fish and meat dishes.

You will smell it as soon as you are within a five-mile radius: barbeque. Really good barbeque, courtesy of the joint formerly known as Brother-In-Law's. Whether you pick ribs, sausage links, chicken, or the luscious slow-cooked Beef Brisket, you will be in heaven. The sauce is a local mystery. No one knows exactly what makes it so spicy sweet, but it is wonderful, making for a fabulously messy meal with much finger licking. Sides include greens, potato salad, beans, cornbread and coleslaw. If there is room in your tummy, get dessert. Deep-Dish Peach Cobbler comes highly recommended.

For a hot and spicy version of American regional barbecue, you cannot do better than this hole-in-the-wall, take-out only spot. It is Texas-style and you can choose from mild, medium or hot varieties of barbecue sauce, but be warned, when the menu says hot, it means as blazing as the Texas scrub country at noon in August. You can choose sausage, chicken, ribs, lamb and turkey as your meat with a few sides or coleslaw, beans and such to choose from. The service is quick, but expect a line of locals at peak hours.

The barbecue here is tangy, even the mild version of its barbecue sauce has a pleasingly assertive bite, though it is nothing compared to the five-alarm hot version. This bare-bones place has been around for years in the East Bay and its Bay Area-wide fans keep the place hopping. Your choice of meats here includes beef, chicken, ribs, and sausage links smothered in your choice of sauce. There is not much else on the menu save a few sides of cornbread, coleslaw and such. The wait staff can be a bit brusque, just remember that the barbecue is divine. Payment is in cash only.

Steak is the main draw here, although there are excellent seafood and chops as well. Each main dish comes with two side dishes. Named after an old-time San Francisco restaurateur, this restaurant has much of a traditional boys-club feeling to it. With dim lighting, no-nonsense service and lots of San Francisco memorabilia decorating the walls, this is a quintessential example of what a steak house should be. The steakhouse also claims that many a times, artists have bartered one of their paintings for the sake of a meal at Izzy's - today, these artworks are part and parcel of the eatery's decor. Now, what would you trade for a dinner?

This storefront is not the fanciest place in the city. It is one of the best, though, for Korean food, making the crowd here an odd mix of students, yuppies, working-class types and Korean ex-pats with little in common but their love of good Korean food. The short ribs over rice is the most popular item on the menu, not surprising considering the tender beef is marinated in a tangy-hot sauce that is addictively delicious. You will also find excellent deep-fried items, of which the prawns are a good choice, mixed with fresh seasonal veggies. The wait staff is not the most personable around, but it is quick.

For a refreshing and unusual contrast, try the Yukhwe Bebim Bab, finely chopped raw beef with Kim Chee and fresh vegetables or a bowl of cold noodles with a tart vinegar-like dressing. You can sometimes find "Mussels Topped with More Mussels" during Saturday Night Supper, while "Sunday Service in the Church of Culinary Delights" sometimes features "Sole Saved from the Surrounding Seas" (you are charged not for the food, but for "your penance"). Meals are often of the fixed-price persuasion, so prepare yourself for a full-on fine-dining experience. Memphis Minnie's

Real Californian Barbecue

San Francisco, CA 94117
United States
+1 415 864 7675
http://www.www.memphisminnies.com
Down in the Lower Haight amongst the marijuana grow clubs, neighborhood bars, and screaming transients, sits a wide array of restaurants that draw customers in by smell alone. But at the top of this list is a bright red building emitting the smell of slow cooked pork with bright lights shining down on a sign reading, "Memphis Minnie's". Owner Bob Kantor opened Minnie's after traveling the country on a kind of barbecue odyssey, searching for the ideal recipe that would please both the infamously attuned taste buds of bay area foodies, as well as those amongst us who scour every halogen lit barbecue joint on earth looking for the perfect set of ribs. Through his travels he perfected his "'cueing" technique (cooking the meat from four to 18 hours, leaving the sauce off the meat) and developed a unique menu that goes beyond the old BBQ standards. For instance, dishes such as the Texas Beef-Brisket Chili Cheese Fries, or Macaroni and Cheese are often paired with Sake, and the traditional side of grits is supplemented with asiago cheese. Next time you're in the Lower Haight, stop in to Memphis Minnie's for some distinctly Californian Barbecue, or grab the local-favorite pastrami sandwich (Wednesdays only) and head down to the Toronado Pub for a pint of IPA to wash it down.

Beautiful presentations, exceptionally fresh ingredients, and generous portions have made Tangerine a San Francisco staple since its opening in 2002. Situated in the trendy Castro district, owner Peter Goss has transformed the former space into a decidedly intimate atmosphere with hints of tropical flavor accenting the chic, homey interior. Chef Sean Pattansuvoranun delicately prepares each dish, focusing on the excellent presentation and sumptuous creativity for which the restaurant is known. With a focus on Asian fusion cuisine, starters such as the Grilled Prawns with Sun-dried Tomato Glaze and Croissant Salmon with Artichoke Dipping Sauce provide the perfect prologue with light portions and full flavors, enticing the palate and paving the way for such outstanding items as the Grilled Salmon Steak with Mango Salsa and Grilled Plum Wine Marinated Pork Tenderloin. However, do not let the phenomenal dinner menu deter you from visiting the famed Weekend Brunch. Each meal is accompanied with attentive, warm service, evoking the same neighborhood feel as its prime location. Peter Goss is fully aware of the interior aesthetics, encouraging the local art community by gracing his walls with various works by local artist Pete Hackett. Should you need to give your wallet a rest, try one of the advertised nightly specials such as "2 for 1 Mondays," "20% Off Tuesdays," or "Thrifty Thursdays," all of which encourage the community spirit while maintaining a slight air of sophistication. Tangerine successfully provides its adoring patrons with a symphony of flavors, innovative cuisine, and a dining experience to judge most others. -Casey Doward

Village Pub

At the Village Pub, a genuine effort is made to make your dining experience more than just a dinner. Only the best of organic farm-produce is picked out and used in the preparation and the same applies to the seafood and meats, as far as the quality is concerned. The cuisine is basically contemporary American, but has its roots in the French and Mediterranean cooking techniques. The wine list is extensive and proves to be a mellow accompaniment to the seasonal menu. Different kinds of cheese and desserts could be the perfect end to this memorable meal!

Walnut Creek Yacht Club

A beacon on the bay!

The San Francisco Bay Area, already famous for its great seafood, has added yet another feather to its cap - the Walnut Creek Yatch Club. The freshest fish is a guarantee here, as it is never frozen - not even while shipping or processing. The result is some marvellous tasting dishes like the Cabo Cocktail and the Fijian Ono, which make for the perfect meal when followed up with desserts like the Creme Brulée, cheesecakes or shortcakes. It is worth noting that almost everything, from mayonnaise and salad dressings, to the clam chowder, is made in-house, and is available at a small counter within the restaurant itself.

Zephyr is endowed with two brilliant, well-experienced chefs, Nick Musser and Max Peterson, who garnish the restaurant's menu with their culinary ideas and innovative cuisine - take your pick from the delicious steaks, pizzas, pastas and seafood entrees, and choose a wine to accompany your meal (the highlight of the extensive wine list is the Livermore Valley Wine, unique to the region). The decor indoors is warm and cozy, while the patio possesses an atmosphere of leisure and light-heartedness - this is just the place to savour local flavour!
