Fresh sushi downtown |
542A Mason Street San Francisco, CA 94102 United States +1 415 989 8218 |
This downtown Japanese restaurant serves a delectable range of items that includes such classics as sushi, udon and donburi, tempura and teriyaki dishes. But the real treat is the critically acclaimed sushi. This is a small, but comfortable, Japanese restaurant and sushi bar with traditional Asian trappings, often frequented by downtown professionals. Watch out, when dishes say spicy, they mean spicy. You may want to accompany your meal with a domestic or imported beer. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Funky eatery in Haight Ashbury |
1466 Haight Street San Francisco, CA 94117 United States +1 415 552 4550 |
It is nothing but mellow here, with the sort of funky atmosphere that Janis and Jimi would have felt at home with. Paintings by local artists cover the walls while the locals add their own color. The menu, a sort of diner chow meets hippie nirvana, has good food, huge portions, and great prices at about $10 or less per person. The home fries are justly famous. Be prepared for lines on the weekends, but the service is always friendly and quick. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This restaurant offers downtown vegetarians fresh, affordable meals. The casual dining room is cute and simple, usually filled with a steady stream of patrons. It's a favorite with local vegetarians, as well as tourists taking the downtown tour. The breakfast menu is very contemporary, serving omelets, hot cakes and fruit. Later the chefs start cooking Eggplant Marinara Hero Sandwiches, Falafels, Barbecued Tofu Burgers, Potato-Tofu Raviloli, curries and specialty dinner salads. Appetizers include homemade Hummus with Grilled Whole-wheat Chapati, Black Bean Nachos, and Indian vegetable-filled pastries with chutney. 1331 9th Avenue (between Irving Street & Judah Street) San Francisco, CA 94122 United States +1 415 566 3117 http://www.arizmendibakery.org/ |
This Inner Sunset neighborhood co-op, affiliated with Berkeley's Cheese Board, just may ruin you for any other bakery. They bake a wide range of breads, with a whole list of specials every day (grab a loaf of the Irish Soda Bread on Tuesdays). They turn out specialty scones and muffins all baked with tender loving care. Their cookies are at once familiar and surprisingly new (try Auntie Mabel's Cookie Brittle or the moist and crumbly Apricot-Almond). Kids love the crispy/cheesy bread sticks. If it's more than just a snack you're looking for, join the throngs filing in from the far reaches of the city for a slice or four of Arizmendi's famous pizza. They top each one with the freshest of locally raised veggies and the creamiest of specialty cheeses. Eat yours at one of two tables inside, on the benches out front, or in Golden Gate Park just a block away. See website for complete list of weekly bread, scone, muffin and cookie specials, as well as a mission statement and a comprehensive pizza calendar. Review © 2007, Wcities |

You will not be able to tell if the person serving you is a man or a woman. Welcome to the land of gender illusionists. It is essential to start off your experience here with one of their signature alcoholic drinks named after the ladies of Asia SF. And while the food here is not initially the main attraction, the menu offers great dishes that surprise with their creativity and balance. Start with an "Asia-dilla" - jack cheese, smoked duck and sun dried cherries in a grilled tortilla. Then for an impressive main course dish, try the Miso Glazed King Salmon on a bed of black rice and a tomato-edamame salad; this dish is delectable and surprisingly cohesive. After you eat, continue your night in the club, where DJs spin R&B/funk, house, as well as salsa and merengue. Cover: varies with event. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The food here is much better than the decor. Some find the pink walls an eyesore, others like the rustic look of exposed ceiling beams and skylights. The affordability factor attracts a mixed clientele. This eatery offers a long menu with over 50 dishes including tons of meat and vegetarian dishes, as well as salads, appetizers, soups and noodles. Play it safe with simple dishes like Marinated Chicken Filets sauteed in butter and garlic. For something more adventurous, try the roasted chicken stuffed with sweet rice, chicken, ground pork, mushrooms and onions or the Thai-style Beef Curry with coconut milk. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Bok Choy Garden specializes in vegetarian, Chinese home-style cooking. Budget-friendly prices and amazing flavors are a great combination if you're looking for a nice take-out meal for lunch or dinner. Parking may be hard to come by in the evening, but the restaurant takes calls for pick up and will bring your food out to the car if you call them when you get there. Financial district cafe |
39 Sutter Street (at at the corner of Market Street) San Francisco, CA 94108 United States +1 415 421 2091 |
This place is a bit more elegant than the usual Financial District breakfast and lunch spot. The food, served cafeteria-style, is good and always includes a selection of vegetarian dishes. Seating is at marble-top tables with bistro chairs. The stairs to a balcony overlooking the ground floor are a bit narrow, but negotiable. Crowded at lunch, but it is easy to find a table in the afternoon for a spiced chai latte or a superior hot chocolate topped with whipped cream. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Where To Eat Like A Japanese Monk |
762 Valencia Street Between 18th &19th Streets San Francisco, CA 94110 United States +1 415 252 7825 |
Whether you crave sushi or something fried, your palate will be satisfied at this popular vegetarian Japanese restaurant. Here the local folks and avid vegetarians and vegans alike from across the city sit down in a simple yet bright dining room to chow down on vegetarian dishes akin to what is served at Japanese Buddhist temples. Try their popular Shitake and Spinach Roll, or even one of their noodle dishes such as the Kinoko which is served with shimeji, eryngll, portobello, and oyster mushrooms and your choice of udon or soba noodles. Many items are served a la cart or can be ordered in combinations. Though the service is not noted for its speed, a good attitude and good food usually compensate for the long wait. Seafood & vegetarian |
2263 Chestnut Street San Francisco, CA 94123 United States +1 415 292 6688 |
This neighborhood favorite offers affordable cuisine that tastes divine and is a favorite with both vegetarians and seafood lovers. The decor is that of a typical contemporary Chinese restaurant with low lighting, tables covered in white linen, assorted lanterns and leafy plants for color. You will find it busier on the weekends and an everyday source for delicious take-out. The menu focuses on the traditional staples plus offers a vegetarian menu and a large amount of seafood dishes. The lunch special will fill you with an appetizer, soup, rice, and your choice of entree for less than $7. For dinner, nothing beats the Szechuan Prawns or the Broccoli Beef paired with an order of pot stickers and Won Ton Soup. The service is quick and efficient. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Step off Haight Street into this soothing low-lit cafe/bar. Beer, microbrews and a great selection of sakes offer thirst quenching. Hunger, on the other hand, will be more than satisfied by the wide range of noodle dishes. Generous portions of recipes from all over the Asian continent give you more than enough sustenance to brave the Haight again when your meal is through. As the name implies, many dishes here are seasoned with citrus to enhance the spicy flavors. Favorite dishes include Coconut chicken with spicy lemon, and noodles with garlic and shiitake mushrooms. The decor is generic Chinese restaurant, but the food is anything but average. The menu includes only seafood and vegetarian dishes prepared with care and with quality ingredients. Wheat gluten and textured vegetable protein take the place of beef, chicken and pork in spicy Kung Pao "Chicken", toothsome Sweet and Sour "Pork" and a succulent Tomato-"Beef" Stir-Fry. Heart Friendly Menu |
3352 Steiner Street At Chestnut San Francisco, CA 94123 United States +1 415 931 2777 http://www.lettusorganic.com |
This trendy lunch and dinner joint has one of the healthiest menus in the city. Set amidst the chic Chestnut Street boutiques, Lettus Cafe features an internationally inspired vegan-friendly menu, chock-full of organic and fresh-to-order entrees. Generally speaking, it attracts the hip and health conscious marina crowd, so more often than not, thin ladies and overly-tanned men can be seen lining up around the block for Mango Lime Chicken paninis, open faced crab cake sandwiches, and the Gardenbuger, which is by far the house favorite. The rustic decor is swanky and inviting, but if you're in a hurry, there's a 'grab-and-go' option. Portions are on the large side, so you certainly get what you pay for. It's the perfect place to go for a mid-week bite, a Sunday Brunch or anytime your in need of a corporate detox. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Green predominates, appropriately, at this unprepossessing restaurant that serves delicious vegetarian cuisine. Do not be thrown by the menu, which lists pork, chicken and beef dishes. It's all made with tofu that does a more than adequate job of approximating the texture of the real thing. The cooks do the rest with careful preparation and expert seasoning of curries, Mu Shu and Kung Pao dishes. There are also wonderful rice and noodle dishes as well as a good selection of rich soups and appetizers. If you're looking to share a romantic cup of green tea with a date, this isn't the spot -during the dinner rush you may be seated at a larger communal table. If the thought of traveling through Mexico to get to Cuba seems excessive then simply have a drink at the alter-culture, Radio Habana Social Club. After walking through the doors of this Cuban Café you will be immersed in the ambiguous wall accessories and backwards service. Rubber chickens, dolls with anteater heads, and a crutch with a plastic foot hang from the ceiling. Don't be surprised if both Albert Einstein and a fake video camera stare at you as you choose between South American Wine, Mexican Beer or the fruitful house special, Sangria. The regulars are almost as colorful as the décor, belching Spanish, reading, and enjoying the wild Cuban music. There is a list of tapas and entrees, including Indian Samosas, Chicken Tamales and Chilean Emanadas. Drinks are from $3-$5 and meals $4-$6. Most guests spend hours humming to Buena Vista Social Club, sipping to their freedom until the wall decorations begin to spin above them. - Erin Podlipnik Review © 2007, Wcities |

The service is fast and courteous. The menu caters to healthy lifestyles with a portion of the menu devoted to "guiltless eating." These are low fat, highly nutritious dishes that include steamed vegetables, skinless white-meat chicken or seasoned tofu. You will also find Teriyaki, Sashimi and Tempura as well as Grilled Yellow Tail in a Lemon Soy Sauce or Chilled Steamed Spinach topped with a Sweet Sesame Seed Dressing. The sushi menu includes a variety of specialty rolls including the Indian Summer (with green bean tempura on the inside and grilled eel and avocado on the outside) and vegan rolls.
