560 Hayes

Vintage clothing
560 Hayes Street
San Francisco, CA 94102
United States
+1 415 861 7993
This trendy shop has one of the best selections of hip vintage clothing in San Francisco. Located in happening and artsy Hayes Valley neighborhood, the staff is selective when choosing merchandise for the store and it shows. The result is great retro pieces in good condition, but with a slightly heftier price tag that you would expect for secondhand items. There is a huge selection of pants, shirts, jackets and dresses, plus accessories, for men and women.

"The Pirate Store", as it is known to neighborhood folk, is actually the official store of the Mission District writing workshop known as (and located at) 826 Valencia. Here, you'll find all manner of pirate-related ephemera, from designer glass eyes and eye patches to a variety of more-than-just-skull-and-crossbones pirate flags. Also for sale are a series of books and periodicals associated with the 826 Valencia writing program and the related McSweeney's publishing imprint, as well as a bevy of pirate-themed souvenir t-shirts. In-store entertainment includes a small fishtank-viewing theater and a giant vat of lard. (Note that lard can be bartered for, but not purchased.) Jeans, khakis, T-shirts and sweaters from this store have become extremely popular with young adults and teen-agers all over America in the last five years. Maybe it is the broken-in feel of the comfortable cottons that the college crowd loves. Maybe it is the preppy, yet modern, look of the Abercrombie line. Or perhaps it is the beautiful models that make the clothes so appealing Regardless, this San Francisco shop is always full of energy and shoppers that are stocking up on clothing and accessories that don the Abercrombie name.

Stemware, lights, vases and other pieces for your home are bound to make heads turn, especially the Asian collection by Japanese designer Kenzo Takada, which incorporates black lacquer and bronze. A decent jewelry and accessories section is also quite impressive and eye-catching, especially for those who like to own something truly unique—and expensive. One of the busiest areas of the city, Chinatown is a hodgepodge of shops, restaurants, and businesses of every kind. The vibrant and close-knit community that lives within this neighborhood has also made it one of San Francisco's top tourist destinations. With over 80,000 residents (plus countless tourists) traversing the streets, it is no wonder that the sidewalks can become precarious during rush hour. Thankfully, there are many side streets, quiet shops, and traditional restaurants that provide some relief from the bustle outside. Try your luck at one of the hundreds of dining options in the area, especially those serving Dim Sum, as they can be some of the best in the city. Also make sure to stop in some of the small herbal shops for some unusual trinkets and art.

At first glance you would not think this Union Street boutique carries as many popular designers as it does. Its floor plan is somewhat disheveled, giving the appearance of a lesser-grade boutique. But once you hit the racks you will see that this Cow Hollow store carries the latest clothing and shoes by top names like Cynthia Rowley, Easel, Laundry, She, and Max Mara. If you do not see your size, do not fret. It only carries one of each garment on the rack and there are more in the back. The store caters to both men and women, although the women's selection is far better.

This is a funky little independent boutique that features exclusive clothing for women. The styles, made by the store's namesake Dema Grim, are youthful and modern and come in bright, vibrant fabrics with different textures. The garments teeter around $100 and are all well worth the price considering that they are small production, original, and quality designs. To go with the wild clothing, the decor of the store is retro and the music playing is punk. Even if you do not buy anything, this store is worth a visit.
